SF: Sam Darnold named backup [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) San Francisco 49ers QB Sam Darnold was named backup quarterback Thursday, Aug. 24. Our view: Darnold fits what HC Kyle Shanahan wants from his quarterback. He works within the system and will take shots that are set up for him by the design of the offense. Darnold will hold a clipboard for most of the season unless starting QB Brock Purdy is banged up. [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. LAR: Cooper Kupp on track for opener [Source: NFL.com]( Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp (hamstring) said he is on track to play in the Week 1 game. Our view: Kupp has been participating in practice this week for the first time this summer. The Rams had joint practices against the Broncos, and our very own Cecil Lammey reports that Kupp looked fantastic. Kupp was challenged by Broncos CB Pat Surtain and won more than a few of those critical matchups in two days of joint practice. [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. WAS: Terry McLaurin uncertain for Week 1 [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter]() Washington Commanders WR Terry McLaurin (toe) is considered questionable for Week 1 at this point, according to sources. Our view: Here we go. Stay tuned as we should have more info on this soon. Toe injuries always worry us with a WR. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. DEN: Jerry Jeudy likely to miss a few weeks [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy (hamstring) is expected to miss 'several weeks' with a moderate hamstring injury suffered during practice Thursday, Aug. 24. Our view: Jeudy reportedly needed assistance from trainers before he was carted off the field. Courtland Sutton now steps into the no.1 receiver role for the Broncos. Behind Sutton, rookie WR Marvin Mims Jr will be asked to do more. The Broncos are going to be a run-heavy team in 2023, but it still stinks to lose their no.1 receiver for an unknown amount of time. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. SF: Trey Lance being shopped [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is being shopped after QB Sam Darnold was named backup quarterback. He's due $5 million fully guaranteed next season. Our view: The former no.3 overall pick hasn't been able to do much in his pro career. Injuries and bad play have limited his time under center for the 49ers, but he could benefit from a fresh start. We'll see if someone wants to take a chance on a young player with a big arm and the athleticism coveted in modern quarterbacks. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. MIN: N'Keal Harry cut [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero](=) Minnesota Vikings WR N'Keal Harry was released Thursday, Aug. 24. Our view: Harry lasted a couple of weeks with the Vikings before they moved on. The former first-round pick (2019) has bounced around the league to a few teams, but there's someone out there who could give him a chance. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. CLE: Joshua Dobbs traded [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Cleveland Browns QB Joshua Dobbs was traded to the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Aug. 24, in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round draft choice, according to sources. The Cardinals will also receive a 2024 seventh-round draft choice in the trade. Our view: The Browns have rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the backup to Deshaun Watson now that Dobbs (who won the no.2 job) was traded away. DTR has flashed in training camp and the preseason. He's the type of player we love in deep dynasty formats. The Browns also decided to not waive Kellen Mond on Thursday as was previously announced before this trade. [Back to Top](#top) [] 8. MIA: Miami called on Josh Jacobs [Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe](=) Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs received interest from the Miami Dolphins, but trade talks didn't go very well, according to sources. The Raiders told teams they don't plan to trade him. Our view: The Dolphins are interested in adding a running back to the mix like a Jacobs or a Jonathan Taylor (Colts). They're the most interested in Taylor per reports, but getting Jacobs would help as well. Jacobs is away from the team but reports indicate he will show up before the start of the regular season, and it's clear the Raiders do not want to trade him away. Stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) [] 9. ARI: Arizona acquires Joshua Dobbs [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Cleveland Browns QB Joshua Dobbs was acquired by the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Aug. 24, in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round draft choice, according to sources. The Cardinals will also receive a 2024 seventh-round draft choice in the trade. Our view: The Cardinals want to see if Dobbs can push for the starting job. Colt McCoy is atop the depth chart right now with Kyler Murray banged up. We'll see if Dobbs can push McCoy to start at the beginning of the season if/when Murray needs more time to heal. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. CLE: Kellen Mond staying with team [Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot]() Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Kellen Mond was not officially waived Thursday, Aug. 24, and will remain with the team. Our view: Things change pretty quickly around here. With the trade of QB Josh Dobbs to the Cardinals, the Browns wanted to keep Mond around as an option to be their no.3 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. [Back to Top](#top) [] 11. BUF: Josh Allen to start preseason finale [Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Paul Hamilton]( Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen will start the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: Some teams won't play their starters in the finale, while it looks like the Bills are at least going to give guys like Allen a drive or two. It won't be long before Allen gets his snaps in and then dons a ballcap on the sideline. [Back to Top](#top) [] 12. NO: Juwan Johnson a favorite of Derek Carr? [Source: ESPN.com - Katherine Terrell](=) New Orleans Saints TE Juwan Johnson has 'developed a nice little rapport' with QB Derek Carr, according to head coach Dennis Allen. 'He seems to be where Derek wants him, when he wants him there,' Allen said. 'When you do that, you kind of get rewarded and the ball comes your way.' Our view: Johnson was impressive last year, and Fantasy GMs are excited about his TE1 potential. Most will get Johnson in the TE15-20 range, but the upside is there for him to be an every-week starter. [Back to Top](#top) [] 13. NYJ: Allen Lazard should be ready for Week 1 [Source: NFL.com]( New York Jets WR Allen Lazard (shoulder) suffered an AC joint sprain during practice Wednesday, Aug. 23, but should be able to play in Week 1, according to head coach Robert Saleh. Our view: Good news for the Jets here. With Corey Davis retiring, the team will use Lazard as their no.2 receiver opposite of Garrett Wilson. [Back to Top](#top) [] 14. IND: Anthony Richardson starting preseason finale [Source: Indianapolis Star - Nate Atkins]( Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson will start the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 24. Our view: Richardson needs all the reps he can get in the preseason. He's set to begin the regular season as the starter, and Richardson will learn from the best teacher; experience. It would greatly help the young quarterback if he could have a strong ground game to lead the way, but RB Jonathan Taylor has been granted permission to seek a trade. [Back to Top](#top) That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
