Big day today as we're kicking off our August Updates for this year. If you're new to Footballguys, you're in for a treat. Our August Updates drop once a week for the next 4 weeks of this month and in them we break down what's happening in detail for each team. They're fantastic. But they're a ton of content to consume so we also offer a "Cliff Notes" version where I ask the writers to distill their full report down each week to the "Need To Know" nuggets. And we put those all in one article I've called out below. It's must-read material. But that's just the start. We also have Risers and Fallers you'll want to see. Plus where to find value in the running back position, plus Dynasty, IDP and Best Ball goodness. And of course the News and Notes you need. Let's Go. J PS. I called this out last night but wanted to make sure everyone knew: Big News. Actually, it's a small thing that I think is big. After two weeks of wrangling, our Tech Folks have been able to implement hyperlinks into the table of contents for the news stories so you can click on the story and it'll drop you down the email right to the story. Please note, this doesn't work for every email provider. But we've been able to get it going for many. It's a small thing, but I think it adds a ton to the usability. Lots of folks asked for it and we put in the work and listened. Enjoy. Stroud starting preseason opener [Source: NFL Network - Jane Slater and Tom Pelissero](=) Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud will start the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 10, against the New England Patriots Our view: This should not come as any surprise. The Texans' future is about Stroud, and starting him as much as possible is a great move. Experience is the best teacher, and Stroud has the physical skill to be a Pro Bowl quarterback some day. As a rookie, he's going to take his lumps but he'll learn and should improve from that experience. [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. BAL: Odell Beckham Jr. makes early exit Monday [Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley](=) Baltimore Ravens WR Odell Beckham Jr. (undisclosed) did not return after making a diving catch during practice Monday, Aug. 7. Our view: Jamison Hensley reported later Monday that Beckham appears to be ok. Let's keep an eye on this situation as the Ravens already have one of their starters (WR Rashod Bateman) out of action. Bateman (foot) could be activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list in the near future, according to head coach John Harbaugh. That means 2023 first-round pick WR Zay Flowers (who we love) is going to get more work in training camp. [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. MIN: N'Keal Harry joins Vikings [Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates]( Free-agent WR N'Keal Harry (Bears) signed with the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Aug. 6. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Our view: A first-round pick of the Patriots in the 2019 NFL draft, Harry has never had more than 33 catches or 309 yards in a season. In seven games with the Bears last year, Harry had just seven catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. The Vikings are giving him a look where Harry will be competing for a back-end spot on the roster with guys like Jalen Reagor (another former first-round pick) and Brandon Powell. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. NO: Kareem Hunt meeting with Saints [Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler]( Free-agent RB Kareem Hunt (Browns) is meeting with the New Orleans Saints Monday, Aug. 7. Our view: The Saints are thin at the running back position with RB Alvin Kamara suspended the first three games of the year and Eno Benjamin (Achilles') out for the season. Hunt is a good all-purpose back who could push Jamaal Williams for playing time if the Saints add him. Once Kamara returns in Week 4, these backups may not have much fantasy value outside of Williams who has an incredible nose for the end zone. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. GB: Grant DuBose good to go [Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky](=) Green Bay Packers WR Grant DuBose (hand) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 7. Our view: DuBose is the rookie from Charlotte the Packers picked up in the seventh round. He's got the soft hands and concentration to be a downfield threat. Dubose needs to stay healthy and prove that he can be more than just a catch-and-run threat. He'll need to work on the quickness in and out of his breaks to play up to his potential in the pros. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. DET: Denzel Mims injures leg [Source: Jeremy Reisman - Pride of Detroit]( Detroit Lions WR Denzel Mims (leg) suffered a leg injury at practice Saturday, Aug. 5. Our view: The Lions just added Mims via a trade in late July. Mims fell out of favor with the Jets, but there's some skill there. We thought a fresh start would be good, but now he's banged up. We'll see how bad this injury is in the near future, but it certainly doesn't help a guy on the bubble just trying to hang onto a roster spot. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. CLE: Jerome Ford injured Monday [Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Chris Easterling](=) Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford (leg) left the field with a trainer after suffering a right leg injury during practice Monday, Aug. 7. Our view: Ford is the primary backup to Nick Chubb at this time. We'll know more about the severity of this injury in the near future. Ford is not only a good runner, but he's adept at pass blocking and a good receiving option out of the backfield. If healthy, Ford is worth a late-round flier in your fantasy league. [Back to Top](#top) [] 8. DAL: Luke Schoonmaker good to go [Source: Dallas Cowboys Public Relations]() Dallas Cowboys TE Luke Schoonmaker (foot) was activated from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. Our view: Schoonmaker is the rookie tight end from Michigan the Cowboys picked up in the second round. He's a big-bodied, all-purpose tight end who can make plays as a blocker and receiver. Schoonmaker is fighting to establish a depth chart with guys like Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot. [Back to Top](#top) [] 9. NYJ: Chris Streveler gets the boot [Source: NewYorkJets.com]() New York Jets QB Chris Streveler was waived Monday, Aug. 7. Our view: Behind starter Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle are there to compete. We're likely to see Wilson as the no.2 behind Rodgers, and if Boyle impresses enough a spot on the practice squad could be his. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. DET: Detroit adding Teddy Bridgewater [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo](=) Free-agent QB Teddy Bridgewater (Dolphins) agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions Monday, Aug. 7, according to sources. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Our view: Bridgewater will provide veteran insurance behind starter Jared Goff. Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell and Bridgewater worked together for two seasons (2018-2019) in New Orleans. [Back to Top](#top) That'll do it for today, Folks.
