Ravens QB Joe Flacco will miss 3-6 weeks with a back issue according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Here’s the tweet from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport: “#Ravens QB Joe Flacco is preparing to miss 3-6 wks with a disc issue in his back. Out at least a week or 2, sources tell me & @TomPelissero.” [( On the much more optimistic side, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted this: “Joe Flacco injured his back lifting. Took an MRI. Team believes a week of rest will calm injury and not expected to miss significant time.” [(=) This is obviously a developing story and we’ll know more soon. Flacco is a veteran of course but he’ll be missing vital reps working with his receivers. Especially newly acquired Jeremy Maclin. Here’s what we had this morning on our Footballguys Baltimore Team Report: Starter: Joe Flacco Backup(s): Ryan Mallett, Dustin Vaughan Starting QB: It's hard to believe that Flacco has already completed nine NFL seasons, but such a large sample means we know who Flacco is; he's a very talented player who lacks the consistency to put together the type of season that the NFL's upper echelon of quarterbacks call routine. In fact, Flacco was second in the NFL last season in completions and attempts but just seventh in yards (4,317) and 18th in touchdown passes (20, with 15 interceptions). That's a microcosm of Flacco's entire career; he has been given plenty of chances but has rarely delivered top-end production. He has flashes of brilliance, but they're rarely sustained for long stretches. His 2017 prospects look to be similar to what he has done throughout his career - both because he is what he is and because Baltimore's offensive weapons around him are still lacking. The receiving corps is full of questions marks with the inconsistent Mike Wallace being the most proven commodity; and the tight ends group is relying on either a player who took a pay cut to stay (Dennis Pitta) or a 37 year-old coming off a torn Achilles (Benjamin Watson). Backup QB: Ryan Mallett was signed in the middle of the 2015 season after Joe Flacco's season-ending knee injury; he has been retained as the backup and should easily hold on to that job as long as his history of being a poor teammate doesn't rear its ugly head again. The only other quarterback on the roster is Dustin Vaughan, a fourth-year undrafted free agent from West Texas A&M who is already on his fifth team (if you include practice squad stops). With Flacco's long history of durability (2015 notwithstanding), Baltimore has generally been a team that only keeps two quarterbacks entering the season. [(=) This also could cool a little of our Breshad Perriman excitement. Our Ari Ingel had this on Perriman. Breshad Perriman is one of this season's biggest breakout candidates as he enters his third year in the league. A 95% SPARQ freak of an athlete, he stands 6’2 212 pounds and ran a 4.26 forty. Reports during the preseason have been glowing from teammates and coaches alike. Dennis Pitta stated “nobody is having a better camp than him so far,” while Mike Wallace said that "Perriman will be a top wide receiver (in the league) this year." While the Ravens only went three wide on 56% of their snaps, Dennis Pitta was essentially used as a wide receiver and he is now gone, so expect that number to spike. The addition of Jeremy Maclin is a major buzz kill, but Maclin is an injury risk, Mike Wallace will be 31 this season and Ben Watson is 37 years old. The NFL’s Gil Brandt, who was the head of Cowboys player personnel from 1960 to 1988, recently mentioned that he thinks Perriman has “the ability to become an outstanding receiver … and an explosive talent, something special -- perhaps the best receiver Joe Flacco has ever played with.” That’s some high praise considering he played with Steve Smith and Anquan Boldin. If Perriman continues his march to dominance this pre-season, he’s going to end up being a major steal in drafts. [( Bottom line is stay tuned for more detail. We should know a good bit more in the coming days about Flacco’s health and have more clarity on his timeline. But clearly, this is something to watch for the Ravens, for Flacco and his receivers.
