[SF - Trey Lance showing progress](=) Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance has made a 'substantial jump' as a passer, according to his private quarterbacks coach, Jeff Christensen. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Listen to the drumbeats. Earlier in his career, there was not this much positive buzz around Lance. In fact, there were mostly concerns about Lance learning the complex playbook of Kyle Shanahan and there were rumblings about arm fatigue he may have suffered during his rookie year. Now, there seems to be a steady drumbeat of positive reports around the young quarterback. With Brock Purdy (elbow) banged up, Lance has a chance to earn the starting job in training camp. It's also important to note that Christensen helped Chiefs superstar QB Patrick Mahomes hone his game as a passer as well. Lance has reportedly learned from watching Mahomes work. Keep tabs on this situation. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [LVR - Michael Mayer could be starter early]() Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Vincent Bonsignore Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer is expected to compete with TE Austin Hooper for the starting tight end job during training camp. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mayer might have been the best "Y" tight end in this draft class, and this may be the best group of tight ends to ever come into the league out of the college ranks. We like his ability to block, and it's not a "tell" when Mayer is out there because he's both a blocker and a receiver. As a receiver, Mayer won't run away from anyone but he does know how to find the soft spot in a zone. We think there's some Mark Andrews (Ravens) to his game. We'll see Mayer, Hooper, and O.J. Howard compete to establish a pecking order at the position in training camp. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [LAC - Max Duggan could be No. 2 QB]( Source: ESPN.com - Lindsey Thiry Los Angeles Chargers QB Max Duggan will have a chance to earnt he No. 2 quarterback job, according to general manager Tom Telesco. 'He has some skills to work with and give him a chance to come in and compete,' Telesco said. 'If you've seen him play through the course of his career, he just has that grittiness and toughness that's just hard to find.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Chargers selected Duggan (TCU) in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft. He's a tough quarterback with moxie, leadership ability, and an erratic skill set as a passer. Duggan is athletic, and he can be a threat to run when passing options are exhausted. His pass placement, mechanics, and decision-making all need work if he's going to win the no.2 job over 2019 fifth-round pick Easton Stick. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [IND - Indy excited about Josh Downs]( Source: FOX 59 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell Indianapolis Colts third-round draft choice WR Josh Downs (North Carolina) was 'the best receiver at the (NFL Scouting) Combine,' according to wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne.'What I saw at the Combine is not what I saw on tape. On tape, you kind of looked at him a little bit and things seemed a little bit more controlled. At the Combine, you saw his speed. You saw he can run. The way he ran his routes were effortless, you know what I mean? It was smooth. ... He's the player I think we were missing, A guy who's agile, who's versatile. Guy who can win on the option routes, things of that sort. I think he's the right fit for us,' Wayne told FOX59's Mike Chappell. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There's a lot to be excited about with Downs. The rookie from North Carolina can get to top speed and a hurry, and man alive is he fast. Downs can make difficult catches seem routine, and he seems to toy with defenders before and after the catch. He could line up all over the formation with the Tarheels, but in the NFL Downs may only be a slot-only weapon. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [LVR - Two RBs may receive more work]() Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Vincent Bonsignore Las Vegas Raiders RB Zamir White and RB Brittain Brown are candidates to receive more playing time this upcoming season. Both could see time with the first-team offense during offseason workout since franchise free-agent RB Josh Jacobs has not signed his tender offer at this point. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] White is the player we've been excited about in dynasty formats since the Raiders picked him up in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. As a rookie, White had just 17 carries for 70 yards. Now, we'll get to see if he can do more - especially if Jacobs is a training camp holdout. White has explosiveness to his game, and at the University of Georgia he reminded some in the scouting community of Miles Sanders (Panthers). [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [LVR - Austin Hooper may have big role]() Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Vincent Bonsignore Las Vegas Raiders TE Austin Hooper could receive a big role in the passing game if he wins the starting tight end job, in the opinion of the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Gone are the days of Darren Waller (Giants) and Foster Moreau (Saints), and Hooper is looking to play a larger role than he has in previous stops on his NFL career. We'll believe it when we see it. The Raiders also have O.J. Howard, a capable veteran tight end, to work at the position. Also, they may have selected the best "Y" tight end in this draft class when they picked up Michael Mayer out of Notre Dame in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft. [NO - Kendre Miller misses rookie OTAs](=) Source: NewOrleansSaints.com - John DeShazier New Orleans Saints RB Kendre Miller (knee) didn't participate in rookie OTAs as he recovers from a torn meniscus, but he said he remains on track to be cleared by training camp. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll see what Miller can do later this summer. It's not the ideal way to begin your pro career, but it's what Miller has to do as he recovers. Miller has good speed, and he's got a three-down skill set so he doesn't need to come off the field. We like his vision as a runner, and he knows how to stack moves in the open field. When healthy, Miller will work to secure the no.3 spot on the depth chart behind Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [ARI - Brian Cobbs headed to the desert](=) Source: Around The NFL Undrafted free-agent WR Brian Cobbs (Utah State) signed with the Green Bay Packers Friday, May 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Cobbs was a graduate transfer from Maryland before playing for the Aggies of Utah State. It was a good move, and Cobbs finished the 2022 season with 76 receptions for 923 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers were career highs, and now he gets to impress the Packers as a priority free agent. In crazy deep dynasty formats, we'll keep an eye on this slot receiver with a decent size/speed combination. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [CHI - Tyson Bagent not sticking around?]( Source: ESPN.com - Courtney Cronin Chicago Bears QB Tyson Bagent is a 'long shot' to make the 53-man roster, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Zero surprise here. Undrafted out of Shepherd University, Bagent is a long shot to make it in the NFL even though he was a highly-productive small-school prospect. Bagent can keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield, but he tends to "bird dog" receivers and fails to properly use his gaze to move players on the defense. Instead, Bagent forces bad throws and tries to make the "big time" play too often while taking what the defense gave him would have worked. He's angling for a practice squad spot - of course. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [100% Deposit Match Up To $100 At Underdog Fantasy]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [NE - Malik Cunningham to stick with Pats?]( Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss New England Patriots QB Malik Cunningham has 'a clear path' to make the 53-man roster as a dual-threat option for the team's No. 3 quarterback spot, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] When Mike Reiss talks, we all should listen. Cunningham can be a versatile weapon on offense as a passer and a runner. There's a spot for him on the 53-man roster due to the various ways he could be used at least as a gadget player. We could see him being used on RPOs for the Patriots this year. Mac Jones and/or Bailey Zappe will be the starter, but Cunningham could have plays packaged together for him to get on the field. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [GB - Sean Clifford to have chance at No. 2 gig]( Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky Green Bay Packers QB Sean Clifford and QB Danny Etling will have the first chance to secure the backup quarterback job, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst. 'I think we'll probably see how these guys do before we think about bringing in a veteran right away,' Gutekunst said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Those aren't great options for the Packers. It's all about the development of QB Jordan Love, but if he gets banged up the team is in serious trouble. We're surprised Clifford was drafted, but the Packers felt strongly enough about him to select him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Clifford set all sorts of records at Penn State, and his grip on the starting position caused Will Levis to transfer to Kentucky. However, Clifford is not a nuanced passer and instead has rushing ability. He'll have to improve tenfold as a passer if he wants to be a backup in this league, and that's where we see his ceiling in the NFL.
