News and Notes from around the league  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Footballguys Email Updates](=) [Go PRO]( | [View Online](=) [Unsubscribe]( | [Sign Up]() [Footballguys.com](=)Daily Email Update • Vol. 24, #289 • Jan. 23rd[,](=) 2023 --------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks To Our Sponsor, [Beardbrand](=) Howdy {NAME}, We have four teams left but that doesn't mean the other 28 are slacking. [SF - RB Christian McCaffrey working through calf issue]() Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco San Francisco 49ers RB [Christian McCaffrey](=) (calf) confirmed he played in the team's NFC Divisional Round game against the Dallas Cowboys despite dealing with a calf injury. He also told reporters 'nothing bad, all good' in terms of where he stands with the injury and his prospects for playing in the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles.'I was fighting but made it through - made it through great,' McCaffrey said after the game. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] McCaffrey should get some rest during the week of practice. With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, there is little question about McCaffrey's availability. He's likely to continue working through this calf issue. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [DAL - More on RB Tony Pollard](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys RB [Tony Pollard](=) (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain along with a fractured fibula Sunday, Jan. 22, and the recovery window is about three months. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Things change quickly around here. Just over the weekend, there were reports that suggested the Cowboys could use the franchise tag on Pollard. That could still happen, but heading into free agency this injury is likely to have an impact on the market for his services. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [SF - QB Jimmy Garoppolo unlikely to work this week](=) Source: Bay Area News Group - Cam Inman San Francisco 49ers QB [Jimmy Garoppolo](=) (foot) is not expected to return to practice this week, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.'X-ray tomorrow to see how things are going. I'd be very surprised if (Garoppolo) was out there this week,' Shanahan said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] If the 49ers can make it to the Super Bowl, Garoppolo would have a chance to practice before the big game. With the way QB Brock Purdy is playing, if/when Garoppolo returns, we think it will likely be as a backup. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [BAL - Chad O'Shea meeting with Ravens]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Cleveland Browns wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Chad O'Shea is interviewing with the Baltimore Ravens for their offensive coordinator post Monday, Jan. 23. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] O'Shea has been an offensive coordinator before (2019, Dolphins), and he's been in the NFL coaching circles since 2003. The Ravens are looking for someone to work closely with QB Lamar Jackson. O'Shea is a solid yet perhaps uninspiring potential hire for Baltimore. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [LAC - Greg Olson to interview with LAC](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Los Angeles Rams senior offensive assistant Greg Olson will interview for the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator spot Tuesday, Jan. 24. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Olson began his NFL coaching career as a quarterbacks coach with the 49ers back in 2001. He's been an OC for five different teams during his time in the NFL. The prospect of Olson coaching QB Justin Herbert is kind of "meh" and we think the Chargers need to find somebody more innovative. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [BUF - QB Josh Allen fought through elbow pain](=) Source: ESPN.com - Alaina Getzenberg Buffalo Bills QB [Josh Allen](=) (elbow) told reporters Monday, Jan. 23, that it was not until two weeks ago that he was able to get back to the mechanics and throwing motion he likes due to the right elbow injury he suffered in Week 9 versus the New York Jets. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Allen and the Bills have fallen short again. For three seasons, the Bills have looked like Super Bowl contenders and they haven't made the big game. We'll see what changes the team makes to make yet another run in 2023. Keeping Allen healthy, creating more of a pass rush, and getting a power back should be atop the "to do" list. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [LAC - Luke Steckel to interview with Chargers]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Tennessee Titans tight ends coach Luke Steckel will interview for the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator spot this week. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Steckel has been working with the Titans since 2013. The Chargers need to find the right mind to work with QB Justin Herbert, and Steckel has yet to get an opportunity as an offensive coordinator. [DEN - Sean Payton to have second DEN interview](=) Source: The Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton will have his second interview for the Denver Broncos head coaching vacancy this week. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Payton is likely at the top of the list for the Broncos. He could work wonders with QB Russell Wilson, and Payton can fix the Denver offense while overseeing the defense as well. The Saints still own Payton's rights, so a trade for Payton - which could include at least one first-round pick - needs to happen before he can get hired. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [SF - RB Elijah Mitchell dealing with groin injury]() Source: FOX Sports - Eric D. Williams San Francisco 49ers RB [Elijah Mitchell](=) (groin) is day-to-day with a groin injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday, Jan. 23. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mitchell had 14 carries for 51 yards in San Francisco's Divisional Round victory over the Cowboys. He played in five games this season, and Mitchell missed most of the 2022 regular season due to a knee injury. Mitchell has done a good job in the postseason of helping the 49ers win games as a reserve runner behind starting RB Christian McCaffrey. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [ARI - Sean Payton to talk with Arizona on Thursday]( Source: GoPHNX.com - Howard Balzer Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is scheduled to meet with the Arizona Cardinals regarding their head coaching vacancy Thursday, Jan. 26. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Payton is going to take a few interviews this week, including a second interview with the Broncos. The Cardinals have a younger quarterback than Denver does, and Payton would be able to craft an offense that gets the most out of Kyler Murray. Acquiring Payton will take a trade of assets, at least a first-round pick, with the Saints. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [NYG - RB Saquon Barkley eyeing CMC-sized contract?](=) Source: FOX Sports - Ralph Vacchiano New York Giants RB [Saquon Barkley](=) is reportedly seeking a new contract in the same range as the four-year, $64 million deal that [Christian McCaffrey](=) signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2020. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That's an interesting report considering it was just over the weekend that a differing report came out. Barkley said he is not expecting to set the running back market this offseason with his next contract. Getting paid like McCaffrey would put Barkley near the top of the market. Either way, the Giants have an important decision regarding the free-agent running back. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [LAR - Trio of favorites emerging in LA Rams' OC search?]( Source: SI.com - Albert Breer Former New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson and former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady appear to be the three top candidates to replace Liam Coen as the Los Angeles Rams' new offensive coordinator. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Rams are looking for a fresh start after a disastrous 2022 season as defending Super Bowl champions. LaFleur would make a lot of sense because he runs the Shanahan system, which McVay (a disciple of Mike Shanahan) runs a variant of. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [BAL - Justin Outten, Baltimore getting to know each other]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten is interviewing with the Baltimore Ravens regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy Monday, Jan. 23. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Outten didn't do much for the Broncos when Nathaniel Hackett was their head coach. However, in the two games after Hackett was fired the offense looked great with Outten calling the plays for the first time. It will be interesting to see where he lands in 2023 because Outten did not get to display his skill in Denver properly until the season was lost.
