News and Notes from around the league  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Footballguys Email Updates](=) [Go PRO]( | [View Online](=) [Unsubscribe]( | [Sign Up]() [Footballguys.com](=)Daily Email Update • Vol. 24, #285 • Jan. 19th[,](=) 2023 --------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks To Our Sponsor, [The 2022 Footballguys Playoff Challenge 2: Divisional Round]() Howdy {NAME}, We're almost to the games and not a minute too soon. [CHI - Ian Cunningham turned down Arizona GM job?](#22) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 1. [TB - OC Byron Leftwich will not return]() Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich will not return as offensive coordinator. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Things change quickly around here. Leftwich was once seen as a hot head coaching candidate after 2021. He stayed with the Buccaneers, and his offense fell apart. Now, Leftwich will be looking for another job. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [KC - WR Mecole Hardman ruled out]() Source: Chiefs.com Kansas City Chiefs WR [Mecole Hardman](=) (pelvis) did not practice all week and was ruled out for the Divisional Round on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. Hardman will need to practice before he can play in the postseason. If the Chiefs advance past the Jaguars in the Divisional Round, then we'll have to see what he does in practice the week after that. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [NO - Sean Payton reportedly seeking $20 million per year](=) Source: The Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is seeking $20-$25 million per year to come out of retirement. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That's why the Panthers and the Broncos are the two teams that make the most sense. Payton wants to be among the highest-paid coaches in all sports, and getting $20-25 million per year would do that. Dave Tepper (Panthers) and Greg Penner (Broncos) are the richest owners in the league and could write that check. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [BAL - Greg Roman done as Baltimore OC](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman will not return in his current post in 2023, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. Roman was already on the hot seat entering this season with the task to get more from QB Lamar Jackson. Once Jackson was injured, Roman didn't have much else to offer. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [JAX - QB Trevor Lawrence questionable]( Source: Jaguars.com Jacksonville Jaguars QB [Trevor Lawrence](=) (toe) was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable for the Divisional Round. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Bah, Lawrence will be out there. It's the postseason, they're coming off a huge comeback win in the Wild Card Round, and the Jaguars are playing with house money on the road against the Chiefs. Everyone seems to be a little banged up at this time of year, and there is no way Lawrence is going to miss this game. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [SF - QB Trey Lance expected to remain with team](=) Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco San Francisco 49ers QB [Trey Lance](=) (ankle) is not expected to be traded in the offseason, regardless of the play of QB [Brock Purdy](=), in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, who notes that Lance would count $9.3 million against the salary cap if he's on the team but $20.15 million if he's traded. Maiocco writes that he does not believe the 49ers would 'remotely consider' trading away Lance during the offseason. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The future is uncertain for the former no.3 overall pick. His rookie season was spent developing, and his second season was spent recovering from injury. Lance has not 'clicked' in this system the way we instantly saw QB Brock Purdy do that. If he's not traded away, and the team doesn't add QB Tom Brady this offseason, then Lance and Purdy should battle in training camp for the starting job. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [BAL - Ravens, QB Lamar Jackson to resume contract talks](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport The Baltimore Ravens and QB [Lamar Jackson](=) will resume contract talks now that the season is over, and the team will use the franchise tag on him if no deal can be reached. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Just because the Ravens use the franchise tag on him doesn't mean a long-term deal won't be made (or he won't be traded). With the tag, the two sides would have until mid-July to find common ground. There is still buzz that Jackson could be a tag-and-trade candidate to a QB desperate team like the Panthers. Stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [MIA - Josh Boyer let go](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Josh Boyer was fired Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Dolphins started the season off hot, but they stumbled their way into the postseason. Head coach Mike McDaniel is having to make changes to his staff, likely so he can keep his job. We'll see if the Dolphins can get some of their star defenders healthy and play better on that side of the ball in 2023. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [KC - Skyy Moore good to go]() Source: Chiefs.com Kansas City Chiefs WR [Skyy Moore](=) (hand) practiced in full all week and was removed from the Divisional Round injury report on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Moore was banged up in a game against the Broncos in Week 17, but he should be out there in the Divisional Round. The rookie has flashed just a bit during his first pro season, but he's a reserve/gadget piece for the Chiefs' offense at this time. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [TB - Todd Monken on Tampa's radar](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport University of Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken could be 'a name to watch' as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers attempt to replace fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. Monken also served as the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator in 2018. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Monken has done a great job as the coordinator for the Bulldogs. We're not surprised he's getting NFL attention. Monken could be a head coach in the NCAA sometime in the near future, or he could make the jump to the NFL and try to work his way up the ranks again. Monken was last the OC for the Browns in 2019, and he was the OC for the Buccaneers before (2016-2018). [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [CHI - WR Joe Reed inks futures deal]( Source: Chicago Bears PR Free-agent WR Joe Reed (Chargers) signed a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Reed was a player we were monitoring in crazy deep dynasty formats when he was with the Chargers. He's got speed, and he plays fast when going through the route tree. Now that he's with the Bears, a team that needs WR help in a bad way, we'll keep him on the crazy deep dynasty radar. [CIN - Bengals' Thursday injury report]() Source: Cleveland.com - Mohammad Ahmad Cincinnati Bengals OG Alex Cappa (ankle) CB Tre Flowers (hamstring) and OT Jonah Williams (knee) did not take part in practice once again on Thursday, Jan. 19. Also, CB Eli Apple (neck), DE Joseph Ossai (shoulder), DT D.J. Reader (rest) and Michael J. Thomas (hamstring) practiced in full. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Bengals offensive line is going to be a problem. They've already been dealing with injuries up front, and now they have more problems on the line. Protecting QB Joe Burrow will be priority no.1 against the Bills in the Divisional Round. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [NYG - WR Isaiah Hodgins ready to play]( Source: Giants.com New York Giants WR [Isaiah Hodgins](=) (ankle) was limited in practice all week but was removed from the Divisional Round injury report on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the Giants here. Hodgins is a favorite of QB Daniel Jones, and he can make big plays happen. In the Divisional Round against the Eagles, the Giants need all hands on deck. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [BUF - WR Isaiah McKenzie practices again](=) Source: Buffalo Bills PR Buffalo Bills WR [Isaiah McKenzie](=) (hamstring) practiced in full once again on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That's a couple of full practices back-to-back for McKenzie. He's going to play against the Bengals, and he could help move the chains on key downs. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [HOU - NYG Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka to meet with Houston](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New York Giants offensive coordinator [Mike Kafka](=) will interview for the Houston Texans' head coaching vacancy Sunday, Jan. 22. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Texans are looking for a quarterback near the top of the 2023 NFL draft. Kafka is a noted quarterback guru for the work he's done with Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) and Daniel Jones (Giants). He's on the fast track to be a head coach, and he may get that call in this cycle. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 16. [NE - Bill O'Brien meets with New England](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien interviewed for the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator vacancy Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] O'Brien is from the Patriots' tree, and he could wind up back in New England...as many former coordinators do. In their search to upgrade their offensive coordinator spot (because, you know, Matt Patricia), the Patriots are mostly considering former coaches from their staff. O'Brien is likely the best one of the group interviewing for the job. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 17. [BAL - WR Andy Isabella signs futures deal]( Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates Baltimore Ravens WR [Andy Isabella](=) signed a reserve/futures contract on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] A former second-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals, Isabella has never played up to his potential as a pro. He's still got speed and quickness, and on a team like the Ravens that needs WR help, we'll continue watching him in super deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 18. [LAR - Justin Outten of interest to LA Rams]() Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten is receiving interest from the Los Angeles Rams regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy, and the Rams have requested permission to interview Outten, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] For most of the season, the two Bobs from Office Space should have talked to Outten (what would you say you do here?). However, Outten got to call the plays in the final two games of the regular season (something he didn't do under former head coach Nathaniel Hackett) and the Broncos' offense looked better than it had all season long. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 19. [BUF - QB Josh Allen a full participant again](=) Source: Buffalo Bills PR Buffalo Bills QB [Josh Allen](=) (elbow) was a full participant in practice once again on Thursday, Jan. 19. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Wild horses couldn't drag him away. Allen has been practicing with the elbow injury for some time now. He's playing against the Bengals, and hopefully (for Bills fans) Allen turns the ball over less than he did in the Wild Card Round. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 20. [IND - Colts want to talk with Brian Callahan]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan is receiving interest from the Indianapolis Colts regarding their head coaching vacancy, and the Colts have requested permission to interview Callahan, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Colts are taking a wide net to this coaching search. Callahan has gotten a ton of help in working with QB Joe Burrow, so it would be interesting to see how he'd do with a new quarterback. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 21. [KC - Duo unlikely to play vs. Jacksonville](=) Source: Kansas City Star - Herbie Teope Kansas City Chiefs RB [Clyde Edwards-Helaire](=) (ankle) and TE [Jody Fortson](=) (elbow) are unlikely to play in the team's AFC Divisional Round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, Jan. 21, according to head coach Andy Reid. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Both Fortson and Edwards-Helaire are getting close to a return. Without Edwards-Helaire, the team has been more than fine with RB Jerick McKinnon working in tandem with two-down banger Isiah Pacheco. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 22. [CHI - Ian Cunningham turned down Arizona GM job?]( Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham reportedly received an offer to become the Arizona Cardinals' general manager but turned it down, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Cunningham will be able to pick and choose where he wants to go because he's highly coveted in the scouting community. We have full confidence he will be a good GM someday. The Cardinals ended up hiring Tennessee Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort to fill the role.
