Exclusive to Footballguys.com --------------------------------------------------------------- Quarterback [Matt Ryan](, Indianapolis (at Houston) The Colts will have their fifth opening day starting quarterback in as many years, but this year comes with promise that the team hasnât had since [Andrew Luck]() retired. The pass offense has looked revitalized and crisp since OTAs, with a fresh start for both Ryan and the team healing the wounds from a disappointing 2021. The Texans' defense is still a work in progress and lacking impact players, so Ryan should have success picking on rookie corner [Derek Stingley Jr]() and getting [Nyheim Hines]( and [Mo Alie-Cox]() more involved than they have been in previous years. [Jared Goff](=), Detroit (vs Philadelphia) Goffâs outlook has lost some luster with the pile-up of injuries on the offensive line that may wipe out two starters and a key reserve. However, the team still has a great set of tackles and an offense that should continue the momentum offensive coordinator Ben Johnson created when he basically took over for Anthony Lynn midseason last year. Unlike December of last year, the team will have a healthy [T.J. Hockenson](), a true deep threat outside in [D.J. Chark Jr](=), and an entire offseason to install a full playbook under one of the brightest young offensive minds in the NFL. [Jameis Winston](), New Orleans (at Atlanta) The only real danger in playing Winston this week is that the Falcons arenât competitive enough to keep Winston passing into the second half. The reclamation project worked out for Winston and the Saints, as last year he was a much more efficient, but still just as dangerous, downfield passer. His #1-3 wide receivers last year are his #4-6 receivers this year as [Michael Thomas]() is back (check his status before game time), and the team also signed [Jarvis Landry](=) and traded up to get [Chris Olave]() in the first round. The Falcons always struggle to slow down the Saints, and Sunday should be no exception. [Trevor Lawrence](, Jacksonville (at Washington) Lawrence and the entire Jaguars team should get a âding dong the witch is deadâ bounce in the first game of the post-Urban Meyer era. Doug Pederson has been a good offensive coach who has gotten the best out of his quarterbacks in the past, and the Jaguars brought in a lot of help for Lawrence this offseason. [Christian Kirk](), [Evan Engram](), [Zay Jones](, and [Travis Etienne]() will all play in their first regular season game for the Jaguars. Theyâll face a Washington team without their best pass rusher ([Chase Young]()) and lacking the defensive line depth that kept stud defensive tackle duo [Jonathan Allen]() and Daron Payne fresh and wrecking plays. Running Back [Nyheim Hines](, Indianapolis (at Houston) The Colts have told us from head coach Frank Reich that Hines will have a bigger role this year. The team is inexperienced at wide receiver and can use him more out of the slot, and they have also expressed a desire to lighten [Jonathan Taylor](âs load a bit. Hines should also benefit from the switch to [Matt Ryan]( this year. Hines has three touchdowns in four games against the Texans with competent checkdown quarterbacks ([Philip Rivers](=) and [Andrew Luck]()). [Mike Davis](=), [Kenyan Drake](, Baltimore (at NY Jets) **Monitor Dobbins Status** [J.K. Dobbins]( could play, but most signs (including [Lamar Jackson](=)âs comments) point to him sitting Week 1, which leaves Davis and Drake as the top two backs. The Ravens' offensive line should be greatly improved from last year with the return of Ronnie Stanley. The introduction of first-round pick Tyler Linderbaum to fix the sore spot at center the team has had since Ryan Jensen left for Tampa. Davis and Drake should have better holes than the stifled run game had last year, and either could hit as a desperation play this week as long as the Ravens can control this game against their old starting quarterback, [Joe Flacco](=). [J.D. McKissic](=), Washington (vs Jacksonville) [Brian Robinson Jr]() was set to be the starter until he suffered gunshot wounds in a robbery, which forces the Commanders to turn back to [Antonio Gibson](). Some of the move to Robinson had to do with Robinsonâs good summer, but Gibson had fumbled and been demoted to kick returner and second team back, so he might be on a short leash. McKissic is a back the team trusts in passing situations and he is also effective in the red zone, where Gibsonâs fumble issues could give the team hesitation. [Kenneth Gainwell](=), Philadelphia (at Detroit) The Eagles will roll out a scary offense against a Lions defense that is still under construction. [Miles Sanders](=) expressed frustration about his role earlier this year, and heâs coming in with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss time this summer. Sanders will share with [Boston Scott]( and Gainwell, who is more involved in the passing game, and a back the team already liked to turn to in the red zone as a rookie last year. Gainwellâs role should grow in year two, and if Sanders has any fumble issues or issues with his hamstring, Gainwell could have a big game in a contest that should see the Eagles put a lot of points on the board. [Melvin Gordon III](), Denver (at Seattle) If you drafted [Javonte Williams](=), you might not want to read this paragraph. [Melvin Gordon III]() is still on the roster, and he could have close to, if not the same 50-50 split that he had with Williams last year. Gordon actually played some of the best football of his career last year. With [Russell Wilson]() at quarterback, the team could value Gordonâs superior pass blocking and receiving skills more than they did when they had poor quarterback play. Williams can seize the larger share of the backfield if he breaks out with some long runs, but he could also make the RBBC approach more entrenched if he struggles in the passing game. Either way, the Broncos should dominate in Seattle and give both backs ample opportunity to swing fantasy matchups on Monday night. Wide Receiver [George Pickens](), Pittsburgh (at Cincinnati) **Monitor Johnson Status** The only reason to hesitate from the fun Week 1 play of the most outstanding rookie of the summer is his quarterback, [Mitchell Trubisky](). Pickens should get a chance to make plays downfield as the Steelers will likely have to summon up some bold plays to keep up with the Bengals' offense, and while [Diontae Johnson]( is trending toward playing, he has a risk of re-injury of his arm/shoulder issue. Pickens was dominant this summer and we might see that he is the new #1 receiver for the team. [Randall Cobb](, [Romeo Doubs](), [Sammy Watkins](=), Green Bay (at Minnesota) **Monitor Lazard Status** [Allen Lazard]( looks unlikely to play as the Packers rarely put in players who donât practice on Wednesday and Thursday, which opens up some opportunity in the passing game. These two teams played a 34-31 shootout in Minnesota last year, and this Vikings offense should be even better and put more onus on Rodgers to create something in the passing game. Cobb is probably the safest pick of the three and most likely to score, especially since he has a long history with Rodgers, Doubs is the most likely to make a big play downfield, and Watkins has had a few shockingly good games in otherwise nondescript seasons in the past. [Russell Gage](, [Julio Jones](), Tampa Bay (at Dallas) **Monitor Gage Status** [Chris Godwin]( could play on Sunday night, but there is a lot of incentive for the Bucs to be cautious about his return, so even if Godwin is active, he probably wonât play his full complement of snaps, which will give Gage and Jones outsized opportunity this week. Gage might not be completely over a training camp leg injury, but he also can be a productive short-range and intermediate target to fill the vacancy left in the passing game when Godwin is on the sideline. Jones has the better chance to score a touchdown, and heâs as healthy as heâll be all year. One thing is for sure, we know [Tom Brady]( will throw a lot and pick on a boom/bust Cowboys secondary. [Isaiah McKenzie](, Buffalo (at LA Rams) **Thursday** McKenzie has been one of the stories of the summer for the Bills, taking the slot receiver role that was left up for grabs when [Cole Beasley]( was allowed to walk in free agency, and leaving [Jamison Crowder]( in his wake. McKenzie is healthy after missing some practices recently, and he had 11-125-1 in his only start in place of Beasley last year. [Jalen Ramsey]( should limit targets for [Stefon Diggs](, which gives [Gabe Davis](=), [Dawson Knox](), and McKenzie more chances in the passing game. If the Rams are getting consistent pressure from [Aaron Donald](, [Leonard Floyd](=) and company, McKenzie will be the safety valve. [K.J. Osborn](), Minnesota (at Green Bay) The Vikings' new offense under Kevin OâConnell should mimic the Rams' offense, where three wide receivers is the base set, and the third receiver is basically a starter. That will put Osborn in the spotlight. Multiple visitors to Minnesota camp, including Peter King from NBC Sports, came away talking about Osborn, and King went as far as to opine that Osborn could be a 1,000-yard receiver this year. [Jaire Alexander]( should be on [Justin Jefferson](=) and [Adam Thielen]( isnât much of a downfield target at this point in his career, so Osborn will get some high-value targets from Cousins as the Packers adjust on the fly to the unveiling of the new and improved Vikings offense. Tight End [Isaiah Likely](=), Baltimore (at NY Jets) Likely was one of the stars of the spring, inspiring more than one Ravens player to put it on the record that the rookie would be an impact player, and then he took over the second game of the preseason with 8-100-1 on only 15 snaps. Likely is going to be the #3 receiving threat in the offense and could see a good share of the targets this week with #4 overall pick Sauce Gardner on [Rashod Bateman]() in his first game as the #1 receiver, and [Mark Andrews]( will surely be the focus of the passing defense game plan. Likely is the best run-after threat on the roster, and all signs point to him carrying over his momentum from the preseason. [Albert Okwuegbunam](, Denver (at Seattle) Okwuegbunam should get a chance to shine in Week 1 as the Broncos go to Seattle, where the Seahawks will be playing their first game in the post-[Bobby Wagner]( era. Their linebacker and safeties arenât known for their coverage skills. Third-round pick [Greg Dulcich]( was supposed to give the team strong two-tight-end looks. But heâs on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, so the athletically gifted Okwuegbunam will be the primary tight end in an offense that should be able to pick on an inexperienced Seahawks defense in [Russell Wilson]()âs return. [Gerald Everett](), LA Chargers (vs Las Vegas) Everett is getting another shot to turn his considerable athletic talent into fantasy production with a top quarterback. It didnât work out with [Russell Wilson]() in Seattle last year, but it could with [Justin Herbert]() this year, or at least in Week 1, as [Donald Parham](=) is battling a hamstring injury that cost him most of the summer. Everett should have room to work in the middle of the field with the Raiders' inexperienced corners needing help from the safeties, and this should be one of the highest-scoring games of Week 1. [Hayden Hurst](, Cincinnati (vs Pittsburgh) Hurst has landed in the best fantasy situation of his career, as the Bengals will roll out one of the most fearsome three wide receiver offenses in the league and now with an improved offensive line. Hurst has first-round physical abilities but has never been in an aggressive pass offense that will give his skills a chance to shine. The Steelers will be much more concerned with [Ja'Marr Chase](=) and [Tee Higgins](), and their linebackers can be a liability in coverage, so donât be surprised if Hurst makes an impact in his first game as a Bengal.
