There's a regular season NFL game on television tonight. More deep breaths. Here's a thought. I'm not great at looking backward. That serves me well most of the time. I think the windshield is a better view than the rearview mirror. But, there are times when it's good to stop and look around. I'm doing that this evening. Every single day since the NFL Draft, we've started this email with a casual hello and asked you to pull up a virtual (or maybe real) chair as we run through the news for the day and what it means. And looking at our open rates, a ton of you take us up on that offer every day. And I want to say thank you. This Daily Email Update is how we let folks know what we're doing at Footballguys. And I'm honored by the fact you read and give us a few minutes of your time each day. It's been a fantastic spring and summer and we couldn't be more excited as we head into the fall and what's shaping up to be another incredible NFL season. So today, I'm thinking about the past few months. And I'm thankful. On a personal side, I'm beyond thankful for family and friends, and on the Footballguys side, I'm humbled and thankful for our staff and business partners and most of all folks like you. Without you folks, none of this exists. So thank you. Ok, that's about as much of that looking back as I do. Let's shift the focus to Thursday night as we get this party started. Hang on, it's going to be a fun ride and we'll be right here with you on it. Let's Go. J PS. [SF - TE Kittle Status Unclear for Week 1](=) Source: Nick Wagoner - ESPN.com Nick Wagoner, from ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle has a groin injury, suffered in Monday's practice, per Kyle Shanahan. His status for Week 1 is unclear at this time. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Kittle did not practice on Wednesday, and that's not a good sign. Friday is the big day for him, but Fantasy GMs need to have a backup plan at the position. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [WAS - Commanders to feed RB Antonio Gibson]( Source: The Washington Times - Matthew Paras Washington Commanders RB Antonio Gibson still has the faith of his head coach Ron Rivera despite a rocky offseason. 'I trust him,' Rivera said on Wednesday, Sept 7. 'We're going to give him the football. I have no issue with that.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Against the Jaguars in Week 1, Gibson could produce like a low-end RB2. The team is also going to use J.D. McKissic as a pass-catching option for QB Carson Wentz. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [GB - Allen Lazard sits out practice](=) Source: Pro Football Focus - Ari Meirov Green Bay Packers WR Allen Lazard (undisclosed) did not practice on Wednesday, Sept. 7. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This Lazard situation is one to watch for Fantasy GMs who have the big-bodied receiver on their roster...and for those who are planning on starting QB Aaron Rodgers. Head coach Matt LaFleur revealed Lazard was stepped on during practice last week but did not disclose his specific injury or its severity. Let's see if Lazard can do anything later in the week of practice. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [NO - WR Michael Thomas trending in right direction](=) Source: The Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (hamstring) was present at the closed walkthrough Monday, Sept. 5, which bodes well for his status for Week 1. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] If Thomas plays, Fantasy GMs should take a chance on him. The Saints open up the regular season against the Falcons, and Thomas could certainly pay off as a flex option. He's been banged up with ankle problems mostly over the last two seasons. Thomas may never be the player he used to be, but he could certainly be a player you consider every week in that WR2/flex spot. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [WAS - Brian Robinson off crutches]( Source: The Washington Post - Nicki Jhabvala Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. (knee) is off crutches, and the swelling in his knee has gone down a lot, according to head coach Ron Rivera. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] More good news for Robinson here. There is no timetable for his return, so we'll just keep monitoring the news about Robinson when it surfaces. On the reserve/NFI list, Robinson has to miss the first four weeks of the regular season. Until his return to the football field, the Commanders will turn to Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic in their backfield. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [KC - Chiefs to have WR by committee](=) Source: Kansas City Star - Herbie Teope Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes apologized to fantasy football managers on Wednesday, Sept. 7, saying 'it will be a different guy every week' in terms of which receivers could put up big numbers on a weekly basis. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] An important note for Fantasy GMs here. Without WR Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs' passing attack is going to look different. There is no one-to-one replacement for Hill, so the Chiefs will spread the ball around more instead. Based on matchups, Fantasy GMs could see a different wide receiver as the Chiefs' top producer on a week-to-week basis. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [NYJ - QB Joe Flacco starting Week 1](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New York Jets QB Joe Flacco will start in place of QB Zach Wilson (knee) against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There was some thought that Wilson could be available for Week 1, but that was always folly. Instead, Flacco gets to go up against his former team, and with him starting it could be a slight boost for the Jets receivers. Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wilson will miss at least the season's first four weeks. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [BUF - TE Dawson Knox signs extension]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox agreed to a four-year extension Wednesday, Sept. 7. Financial terms weren't disclosed. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Things change pretty quickly around here. It wasn't that long ago that the Bills were looking for an upgrade over Knox. Instead, he's become a dangerous weapon for QB Josh Allen and now is one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league. He's unlikely to match the nine touchdown grabs he had in 2021, but Knox will continue to be a large part of what the Bills do through the air. We like him as a top-10 fantasy tight end for this season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [NO - WR Michael Thomas on field Wednesday]() Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (hamstring) was participating during the open portion of practice Wednesday, Sept. 7. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Thomas looks like he'll be out there against the Falcons in Week 1. That means Fantasy GMs should be considering him as a flex play to open the season. Sure, he may not be what he once was, but Thomas does have fantasy value if healthy enough to play. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [PHI - RB Miles Sanders on track for Week 1](=) Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders (hamstring) will be limited in practice on Wednesday, Sept. 7, but should be ready for Week 1 versus the Detroit Lions. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Sanders returned to practice last Thursday following a hamstring injury in late August. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said his concern level for Sanders' hamstring injury is "not high." We're going to see the Eagles use a three-headed RBBC, and that's going to be frustrating for Fantasy GMs. We see Sanders as an RB3/flex option against the Lions in Week 1. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [LVR - TE Darren Waller eyeing season opener]( Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal - Vincent Bonsignore Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller (hamstring) expects to play in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Waller has been missing time in August, but many thought he was merely 'holding in' as he looks for a new contract. Anytime he's on the field, Waller is a TE1 for Fantasy GMs and a must-start player. [TB - WR Chris Godwin takes part in practice]() Source: Sirius XM NFL Radio - Adam Caplan Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 7. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's a bit of a surprise that Godwin participated fully. The team likely wanted to give him some good work and then see how he's feeling the rest of the week. Godwin is still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in Week 15 last year, and most reports indicated he would be limited if he does play in Week 1. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [BAL - Deadline close for new QB Lamar Jackson deal](=) Source: The Athletic - Jeff Zrebiec Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson said he is still talking with the team about a possible contract extension but said that the deadline for the talks is Friday, Sept. 9. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Jackson is his own agent, and he certainly wants to concentrate on nothing but football after Friday. The general consensus is that Jackson and the Ravens are not close to a new contract agreement. That means Jackson will likely be betting on himself in 2022 with the possibility of being a free agent (or being franchise tagged) in 2023. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [PHI - Two added to practice squad](=) Source: NFL.com Free-agent WR Auden Tate and TE Dalton Keene were signed to the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad Wednesday, Sept. 7. The team also released QB Reid Sinnett and RB La'Mical Perine from the practice squad. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Keene is a blocker, fullback, tight end, H-back who is tough but has battled injuries since the Patriots made him a third-round pick in 2020. Tate is a big-bodied wide receiver with a large wingspan and catch radius. We'll monitor both, but only in crazy deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [BUF - WR Isaiah McKenzie good to go](=) Source: BuffaloBills.com Buffalo Bills WRs Stefon Diggs (rest) and Isaiah McKenzie (groin), S Jordan Poyer (elbow) and DT Tim Settle (calf) all participated fully in practice on Wednesday, Sept. 7, and have no designation on the final injury report for Week 1. Bills OL Tommy Doyle (foot) and TE Quintin Morris (hamstring) were limited and are listed as questionable for Thursday night. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the Bills' offense here. McKenzie is the leading slot option for the Bills passing attack, and that gives him deep flex appeal in Week 1 against the Rams on Thursday night. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 16. [LAR - WR Van Jefferson to miss Week 1]() Source: NFLCommunications.com Los Angeles Rams WR Van Jefferson (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 7, and has been ruled out for Week 1. The Rams did not hold a practice Wednesday, so his participation is an estimation. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. Earlier reports have indicated the team may be targeting a Week 2 or Week 3 return for the veteran receiver. Ben Skowronek or Tutu Atwell could see an uptick in snaps with Jefferson out on Thursday night against the Bills. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 17. [NYJ - QB Zach Wilson out until Week 4]( Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini Updating an earlier report, New York Jets QB Zach Wilson (knee) will miss out until Week 4 at the earliest, but he hasn't suffered any setbacks. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] If he hasn't suffered any setbacks, the team is just being cautious with a player they hope can be a franchise quarterback. Wilson did not look good as a rookie last season, and this knee injury will hamper his growth. Joe Flacco starts for the Jets until Wilson is healthy enough to return. Wilson will be able to practice with the team. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 18. [WAS - TE Logan Thomas limited in practice]( Source: The Washington Post - Nicki Jhabvala Washington Commanders TE Logan Thomas (knee) was listed as limited on the team's first injury report on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Also limited was TE Cole Turner (hamstring), and S Kamren Curl (thumb) and WR Cam Sims (concussion) both did not practice. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's no guarantee that Thomas will be out there against the Jaguars in Week 1. This is a good sign of his availability, but we'll have to see what Thomas can do on Friday. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 19. [DAL - WR Michael Gallup making progress]( Source: ESPN.com - Todd Archer Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Gallup (knee) took part in individual drills on Wednesday, Sept. 7, for the first time in his comeback from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Gallup seems right on track in his recovery. The word has always been that he would not be available in Week 1, and many beat writers around the team expect him to be out there in Week 3. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 20. [GB - TE Robert Tonyan listed as limited]() Source: NFLCommunications.com Green Bay Packers TE Robert Tonyan (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 7. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tonyan was brought off the PUP list back in the middle of August. We'll see if he can get a full practice in on Friday. The Packers no longer have WR Davante Adams, and their WR corps has some slight injuries at this time (Allen Lazard, Christian Watson). Having Tonyan out there against the Vikings would really help QB Aaron Rodgers. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 21. [SEA - Kenneth Walker III a no-go Tuesday]() Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta Seattle Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III (hernia) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Sept. 6. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Seahawks play on Monday night in Week 1 at home against the Broncos. We'll see what Walker can do later in the week with Saturday being the most important day in the process. If Walker can't go, Rashaad Penny will get a boost in touches as the team's starter. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 22. [BAL - RB J.K. Dobbins a limited participant]() Source: BaltimoreRavens.com Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 7. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ravens coach John Harbaugh said J.K. Dobbins (knee) is "ascending quickly" but he would not say if Dobbins would play in Week 1. If Dobbins has to miss some time, the Ravens would turn to Mike Davis and Kenyan Drake to split backfield touches.
