Who benefitted most as NFL rosters were trimmed to 53 players? It's Wednesday and rosters around the league are shuffling as teams cut rosters down to 53. The big news comes from Houston as the Texans released RB Marlon Mack. Our Sigmund Bloom wrote about Why It Matters: "If you have been taking Dameon Pierce in fantasy drafts, this should make you feel even better. Pierce's recent rise to the 5th/6th round will be solidified by this news, although Mack never looked like a real threat to Pierce this preseason. Pierce has some passing down chops, but Rex Burkhead is expected to have that role at least to start the season. If the Texans are more competitive than last year or Pierce overtakes Burkhead, the rookie sensation should be a hit in fantasy leagues." Check out the rest of Sigmund's notes in the feature below. Plus lots more content to make sure you're the most prepared person at your draft. Again. Let's Go. [] 1. [BAL - Ominous signs for RB J.K. Dobbins](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins (knee) seems uncertain to be ready for Week 1 with RB Kenyan Drake visiting. 'If JK can go, I look at it now, it would be great,' head coach John Harbaugh said. 'If not, we've got the guys that'll play.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Dobbins has been on the road to recovery ever since injuring his knee last year in training camp. The plan was to have him ready for the start of the regular season, but that may be in danger. Drake, now signed by the Ravens, is a stash player for the early portion of the season with Dobbins' status in question. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [MIN - QB Kellen Mond cut]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Minnesota Vikings QB Kellen Mond was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mond was just a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft. He's athletic and has a strong arm, but Mond failed to impress enough to make the final roster with the Vikings this year. They'll go with Nick Mullens as the primary backup to starting QB Kirk Cousins. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [BUF - TE O.J. Howard let go](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Buffalo Bills TE O.J. Howard was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Those listening to the drumbeats from Bills camp should not be surprised by this news. The former first-round pick just never caught on with the Bills, and he did not impress in camp or the preseason. Howard was so unimpressive that the Bills are going to eat $3.1 million in guaranteed money just to get rid of him. We'll see if some team takes a chance on the veteran as a no.2 tight end. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [HOU - RB Marlon Mack let go by Houston]() Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter Houston Texans RB Marlon Mack was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Perhaps the most shocking news from the cut downs on Tuesday, the Texans have decided to move on from Mack. Added as a free agent this offseason, Mack was initially seen as the primary back for the Texans entering training camp. Well, things change quickly around here and rookie Dameon Pierce has emerged in the Texans backfield. Mack could still be a banger for someone out there who wants some veteran depth. But the big news here is an upgrade for Dameon Pierce's prospects. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [CLE - QB Josh Rosen cut]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Cleveland Browns QB Josh Rosen was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The former first-round pick (2018, Cardinals) has bounced around to several teams in the NFL. He's got talent as a passer, but reports indicate Rosen isn't quite up to the speed of the NFL game. Rosen is running out of chances to play in the NFL. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [DAL - Dallas waives two]( Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer Dallas Cowboys RB Aaron Shampklin (ankle) and CB Isaac Taylor-Stuart (ankle) were waived/injured Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Shampklin has flashed during training camp and the preseason. This ankle injury cut his attempt of winning the no.3 job short. Perhaps the team adds him to the practice squad. Shampklin is the type of player we'll monitor if he's on a roster, but only in crazy deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [NO - QB Ian Book let go](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New Orleans Saints QB Ian Book was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Book is a raw prospect as a quarterback. He's got moxie and athleticism, but he needs work as a passer. Perhaps the Saints bring him to the practice squad to further develop his skill. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [BUF - RB Duke Johnson cut](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Buffalo Bills RB Duke Johnson was released Tuesday, Aug. 30, and could return to their practice squad if he doesn't sign elsewhere. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Johnson did a good job with the Bills, and he fits nicely in their offense. However, the backfield was crowded and Johnson is a player they must think they can sneak through to the practice squad. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [ARI - QB Trace McSorley cut](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Arizona Cardinals QB Trace McSorley was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] McSorley is a player who can attack defenses with his arm as a passer and his legs as a rusher. Keeping him as a developmental prospect (on the practice squad) behind starting QB Kyler Murray and primary backup QB Colt McCoy would make sense. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [CHI - WR Isaiah Coulter cut]() Source: Pro Football Network - Aaron Wilson Chicago Bears WR Isaiah Coulter was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Coulter was a raw, fifth-round pick out of Rhode Island for the Texans in the 2020 NFL draft. He's been banged up, but Coulter does have enough potential to keep him around as a developmental prospect on the practice squad. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [NE - TE Devin Asiasi let go]( Source: NFL Network - Mike Giardi New England Patriots TE Devin Asiasi was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] In the 2020 NFL draft, the Patriots selected two tight ends in the third round. Now, both Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene are off the roster. He's a receiving threat who can attack the middle of the field. Some team should be willing to take a chance on Asiasi. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [TB - WR Tyler Johnson waived]() Source: The Athletic - Greg Auman Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Tyler Johnson was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Johnson was a fifth-round pick out of Minnesota in the 2020 NFL draft. He's got a nice size/speed combination, and some team might want to take a chance on him as a developmental receiver. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Patterson is a smaller but compact back with good foot frequency. There's a chance some team out there would want him as a reserve on the bench due to his skill set and playing experience. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [DEN - Denver cuts Dylan Parham](=) Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis Denver Broncos TE Dylan Parham was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Parham flashed a bit during training camp for the Broncos. A converted quarterback, Parham switched to tight end at NC State and was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos earlier this year. He was a blocking tight end in college, but he did flash receiving ability. Parham is a player to monitor if he lands on the practice squad, but only in the craziest of deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [DEN - QB Josh Johnson released](=) Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis Denver Broncos QB Josh Johnson was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Broncos are going with Brett Rypien as the primary backup to QB Russell Wilson. Johnson has played for roughly half the league and should be able to find a home as a reserve player. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 16. [DEN - WR Darrius Shepherd waived](=) Source: KOA NewsRadio 850 AM - Brandon Krisztal Denver Broncos WR Darrius Shepherd was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Shepherd was added after the team lost Tim Patrick (knee) for the season due to a training camp injury. He knows the offense since he had experience working under Nathaniel Hackett in Green Bay, so perhaps a spot on the practice squad is waiting for him. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 17. [IND - RB Phillip Lindsay released](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Indianapolis Colts RB Phillip Lindsay was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Lindsay entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado in 2018, and he had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Since then, it's been all downhill for the small but feisty runner. He averaged 2.8 yards per carry last year with both the Texans and the Dolphins. He was in line to be the no.3 running back for the Colts but did not do enough to make the team. Somebody out there will likely sign him to be a reserve runner. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 18. [BUF - WR Tanner Gentry done in Buffalo]() Source: Pro Football Network - Aaron Wilson Buffalo Bills WR Tanner Gentry was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Gentry was a favorite target of QB Josh Allen from their days playing together at the University of Wyoming. He's played for a few teams in the league, but Gentry doesn't have the staying power to make the active roster for too long. We'll see if some team takes a chance on him as a practice squad-type of player. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 19. [PIT - Pittsbugh announces slew of cuts]() Source: Steelers.com The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a slew of roster cuts Tuesday, Aug. 30. Included in the roster cuts are DT Carlos Davis, DB Elijah Riley, DB Chris Steele, DB Linden Stephens, LB Ron'Dell Carter, LB Hamilcar Rashed, LB Delontae Scott, LB James Vaughters, and DT Donovan Jeter. Additionally, OL William Dunkle, OL Adrian Ealy, OL Chaz Green, OL John Leglue, OL Ryan McCollum, RB Max Borghi, TE Kevin Rader, TE Jace Sternberger, WR Tyler Snead, WR Tyler Vaughns, and WR Cody White were cut. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll see if someone like RB Max Borghi or TE Jace Sternberger can catch on with the Steelers on their practice squad. Both are players we would monitor in crazy deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 20. [PHI - Philly moves on from WR Deon Cain](=) Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler Philadelphia Eagles WR Deon Cain was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Cain was a sixth-round pick out of Clemson in the 2018 NFL draft for the Colts. Since then, he's bounced around to a few teams and has flashed just a little bit. Cain did have a good preseason, so perhaps someone will take a chance on the veteran speedster. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 21. [MIN - QB Sean Mannion hits the open market](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Minnesota Vikings QB Sean Mannion was released Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Vikings got rid of two quarterbacks on Tuesday. Mannion was the veteran who was seen as the backup to Kirk Cousins. When the team traded for Nick Mullens, that status for Mannion was in question. The Vikings decided to move on from Mannion and Kellen Mond during final roster cut down. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 22. [SF - RB JaMycal Hasty out in San Francisco](=) Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows San Francisco 49ers RB JaMycal Hasty was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Earlier this year, the 49ers re-signed Hasty to a one-year, $895,000 contract. He was an exclusive-rights free agent, and he'd done enough with the team for them to keep him around for a longer look. Just because he's been waived today does not mean he won't land on the 49ers practice squad later. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 23. [PIT - RB Anthony McFarland headed to open market](=) Source: NFL Trade Rumors Pittsburgh Steelers RB Anthony McFarland was waived Tuesday, Aug. 30. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The writing was on the wall during training camp that McFarland could be on his way out. The Steelers have seen undrafted rookie Jaylen Warren emerge as perhaps the no.2 back behind starting RB Najee Harris. With Benny Snell in the mix, the Steelers could waive McFarland. He won't have much interest on the open market. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks.
