[PHI - RB Jason Huntley hits open market](#8) 9. [DET - RB Craig Reynolds should make team](#9) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 1. [WAS - Brian Robinson update](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Updating a previous report, Washington Commanders RB Brian Robinson is 'in a really good place' after being shot multiple times and could be released from the hospital as soon as Monday, Aug. 29, head coach Ron Rivera said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] As terrible as this is, we're thankful it wasn't worse. Robinson will be able to recover after getting shot during a robbery and car-jacking attempt. He was shot in the glute and lower leg but is still hopeful to play at some point this season, per sources. There is no timetable for his return, but as more information comes out we'll let you know. Robinson is reportedly in good spirits after his surgery. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [SF - QB Jimmy Garoppolo reworks deal]() Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo agreed to a restructured one-year contract with the 49ers Monday, Aug. 29, and will remain with the team this season, according to sources. The contract includes a no-trade clause and a no-tag clause, which will allow Garoppolo to leave next offseason. The contract can be worth as much as $16 million with incentives. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Every team needs a capable backup, but this feels like bad news for Trey Lance. With a proven guy in Garoppolo, the team may prove to be less patient with Lance than might have been otherwise. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [MIN - RB Alexander Mattison drawing trade interest]() Source: Heavy Sports - Matt Lombardo Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison is drawing interest on the trade market, and while the team isn't shopping him, it is listening to offers, per sources on Monday, Aug. 29. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mattison has talent, and there are quite a few teams he could start for if he had the chance. With the Vikings, Mattison remains as a backup to Dalvin Cook. Mattison is headed into the final year of his rookie deal and is "not aware" of any contract talks between Minnesota and his agent. Reports indicate the Vikings could be asking for a third- or fourth-round pick in return. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [SF - RB Trey Sermon the RB2?]( Source: MMQB - Peter King San Francisco 49ers RB Trey Sermon will be 'an active No. 2' running back, in the opinion of MMQB's Peter King [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Sermon has a ton of talent, but last year as a rookie he didn't quite understand the nuances of the wide zone system. That's why he lost out on playing time to Elijah Mitchell in 2021, and Mitchell sits ahead of him on the depth chart once again. The 49ers have a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield with Mitchell leading the way. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [PIT - QB Mitchell Trubisky expected to get Week 1 nod](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky will likely be the starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but head coach Mike Tomlin will announce the identity of the starting quarterback at his leisure, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. It would be a surprise if Mitchell Trubisky is not named the starting quarterback for Week 1. ... He has been the QB1 from the beginning,' according to Rapoport. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Nobody should be surprised by this news. What would be more surprising is Trubisky starting all of the 2022 season. The Steelers have Kenny Pickett, a first-round pick in this year's draft, as the quarterback of the future. When they're out of playoff contention, perhaps the team turns the reins of the offense over to the rookie to get him valuable experience. [NYG - QB Davis Webb locks up spot?]() Source: NFL.com - Michael Baca New York Giants QB Davis Webb 'all but secured a spot' on the 53-man roster with his performance in the preseason finale against the New York Jets Sunday, Aug. 28, in the opinion of Michael Baca of NFL.com. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tyrod Taylor was banged up in the preseason finale with a minor back injury. Daniel Jones is the starter, and Taylor is his primary backup. That means Webb sits as the no.3 quarterback on the depth chart. Not every team carries three quarterbacks, but apparently the Giants could lean that way with Webb's performance. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [PHI - Philly parting with Carson Strong]( Source: CBSSports.com - Jonathan Jones The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving QB Carson Strong, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones on Monday, Aug. 29. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Strong did a great job in college of running the Nevada "air raid" offense, but he fell undrafted due to long-term concerns about his knee. The Eagles picked him up as a UDFA, and we imagine Strong could make it onto their practice squad when the dust settles with all these cuts at the end of the preseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [PHI - RB Jason Huntley hits open market](=) Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane Philadelphia Eagles RB Jason Huntley was waived Monday, Aug. 29. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] A fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft (Lions), Huntley has played with the Eagles over the last two seasons. He's a good runner and receiver out of the backfield, but he didn't do enough to make the 53-man roster. We imagine someone, including the Eagles, is interested in Huntley as a practice squad player. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [DET - RB Craig Reynolds should make team]() Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett Detroit Lions RB Craig Reynolds 'seems secure in his roster' following the preseason finale, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Undrafted out of Kutztown in 2019, Reynolds has been a solid player for the Lions' offense when called upon. After bouncing around to a few teams, Reynolds found a home with the Lions in 2021. Injuries and illness thrust him into the starting lineup last year in Week 15, and Reynolds responded with 112 yards rushing against the Cardinals. He's no.3 on the depth chart once again this year behind starter D'Andre Swift and primary backup Jamaal Williams. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family.
