Please allow me to veer from that for a moment. Like many of you, I've been not just brokenhearted over this latest tragedy in Texas, but I've struggled to find the right words. I think [this from Matthew McConaughey]()feels closest to where I am. We can do better. We must do better. From McConaughey: "As all of you are aware, there was another mass shooting today, this time in my hometown of Uvalde, Texas. Once again, we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us. "The true call to action is now for every American to take a longer and deeper look in the mirror and ask ourselves, 'What is it that we truly value? How do we repair the problem? What small sacrifices can we individually take today, to preserve a healthier and safer nation, state, and neighborhood tomorrow?' We cannot exhale once again, make excuses and accept these tragic realities as the status quo. "As Americans, Texans, mothers, and fathers, it's time we re-evaluate, and renegotiate our wants from our needs. We have to rearrange our values and find a common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children's issue. "This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we stand on, we all know we can do better. We must do better. Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured. "And to those who dropped off their loved ones today not knowing it was goodbye, no words can comprehend or heal your loss, but if prayers can provide comfort, we will keep them coming." For how to help the folks in Uvalde specifically, there's [more info here.]() Let's pull together and move forward. Now on to a bit of Football News. [] 1. [SF - TE George Kittle to miss OTAs](=) Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (lower body) is likely to be sidelined until training camp, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, May 27. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Kittle is a seasoned veteran and doesn't need every rep leading up to camp in August. He missed three weeks due to a calf strain last season, so the 49ers are giving him some more time to rest and recover. Without Kittle at OTAs, new guy TE Tyler Kroft will get used to his new surroundings. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [HOU - HOU believes in QB Davis Mills](=) Source: Houston Chronicle - Brian T. Smith Houston Texans QB Davis Mills has the faith of his head coach, Lovie Smith. 'It's been documented on what I think of Davis. I think he's going to be an excellent quarterback in the NFL for a lot of years,' Smith said. 'Every day we've opened up the building, [Mills has] been in here. He's our quarterback. When you're the leader, you've got to be visible,' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Texans have built around Mills instead of looking for his replacement this offseason. He'll get the 2022 season to prove himself as a starter, or else the Texans will be in the market for a quarterback next offseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [GB - TE Robert Tonyan closer to action]( Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Ryan Wood Green Bay Packers TE Robert Tonyan (knee) worked on the sidelines during the first week of OTAs as he continues to rehab from knee surgery. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Packers offense is going to look different without WR Davante Adams. Tonyan is a favorite target of QB Aaron Rodgers when healthy. Reports have indicated Tonyan has been ahead of schedule in his recovery, so there's a chance he will be fully cleared at some point in training camp. He's a TE2 for Fantasy GMs who could easily sneak into the low-end TE1 range this season if he stays healthy. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [DAL - WR CeeDee Lamb ready for No. 1 role](=) Source: DallasCowboys.com - Rob Phillips Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb says he is ready to take the reins as the team's No. 1 wide receiver. 'I've been ready,' Lamb said. 'That's just me and my competitiveness. That's in my nature. It's kind of how we grew up playing football. I'm always ready for my name to be called.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Fantasy GMs are ready for Lamb to take over the no.1 spot as well. Lamb gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason, and he's already got the trust of QB Dak Prescott. Fantasy GMs are taking Lamb off the board in the first round of many fantasy drafts, and he's a WR1 every-week starter this season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [NO - WR Thomas 'Heading in Right Direction'](=) Source: Nick Underhill - NewOrleans.Football Nick Underhill, from NewOrleans.Football, reports New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is 'heading in the right direction' in his recovery from an ankle injury. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Thomas missed all of last year and a good chunk of the 2020 season dealing with this ankle problem. He's back this year and should be full strength, but his role will be altered somewhat from where we remember. The Saints have Jarvis Landry to work underneath routes, and they selected Ohio State WR Chris Olave in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft to get plenty of targets as well. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [BAL - QB Lamar Jackson downplays OTAs absence]( Source: Twitter - Lamar Jackson Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson downplayed his absence from voluntary organized team activities in the wake of criticism but also noted he 'will be there.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ah yes, the faux outrage some have when players miss VOLUNTARY work. Jackson is playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, but the two sides are supposedly looking into a new long-term contract. Any such deal would make Jackson one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. If nothing is done, the Ravens could franchise tag Jackson next offseason to give themselves more time to work something out. When the work is mandatory, Jackson will be there. Then we'll have to see what kind of progress he makes as a passer in 2022. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [ATL - QB Marcus Mariota 'hungry' to start again](=) Source: The Associated Press - Charles Odum Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota says he's 'hungry to get back on the field again' after being a backup the past two seasons. 'For me personally, the last couple of years was a learning opportunity,' Mariota said on Thursday, May 26. 'Previously when I was at Tennessee I had an opportunity to play. I was a starter. Being around that and then going and learning for a couple of years, I'm kind of hungry to get back on the field again.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mariota is more of a bridge starter to the next quarterback for the Falcons (not yet on the roster) than he is a long-term solution. We'll see how he plays under Smith again, since he knows the system from their days together in Tennessee (where Mariota was benched for Ryan Tannehill). Mariota's contract with the Falcons is "effectively" a one-year, $6.75 million deal with a $12 million option in 2023. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [TEN - No Limitations for WR Burks]( Source: John Glennon - Sports Illustraded John Glennon, from Sports Illustrated, reports Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said there are 'no limitations' for rookie WR Treylon Burks at team OTAs. Burks had to miss time at rookie minicamp due to conditioning issues. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Burks has had a rough start to his pro career. The team trades away A.J. Brown with the idea that Burks can be the man to replace him - if not this year then eventually. Burks then shows up at rookie minicamp, struggles with drops and has to miss time to catch his wind. We'll see if he can get in better shape and start performing better in training camp and the preseason. [] 9. [CLE - WR Jakeem Grant hoping for more]( Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Dan Labbe Cleveland Browns WR Jakeem Grant said he signed with the team this offseason because the coaching staff plans to utilize him in a variety of ways. 'That really sealed the deal with being more involved in the offense,' Grant said. 'I feel like this year is the stepping stone to show people I'm a legitimate receiver.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Grant is tough to get a bead on when he's got the ball in the open field. He's lightning quick and can make ankle-breaking moves after the catch. Grant is small, measuring around 170 pounds, and should mainly contribute on special teams as a return man for the Browns. We'll see what kind of plan the coaching staff could have in place for Grant as a gadget receiver on offense. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [GB - Watson 'A Problem' for Opponents](=) Source: Matt Schneidman - The Athletic Matt Schneidman, from The Athletic, reports Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said rookie WR Christian Watson will be a "problem" for opposing secondaries. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Watson has a nice size/speed combination and can win balls in the air. He's done a good job of becoming a better route runner through his college career, and that should help him make an easier transition to the pros. Watson is a player to watch out for in the preseason to see what kind of chemistry he's building with QB Aaron Rodgers. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [TB - Cyril Grayson putting it all together]( Source: Buccaneers.com - Scott Smith Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Cyril Grayson is now 'truly confident' in his ability, according to offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. 'I think he truly believes that he can get it done, and it's fun for me to see the confidence that he shows up in practice with every day,' Leftwich said. 'it's like a whole different guy from three years ago.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Grayson, undrafted out of LSU in 2017, flashed a bit with the Buccaneers late last season but was slowed by a hamstring injury. He's got sprinter's speed and can flat out fly down the field. Russell Gage should be the no.3 receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. However, Grayson has speed, talent and it looked like QB Tom Brady trusted him last year on some big plays. We'll keep monitoring Grayson in deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [TEN - RB Derrick Henry sitting out workouts](=) Source: TennesseeTitans.com - Jim Wyatt Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry has not been participating in voluntary workouts so far this offseason. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The work is voluntary, and Henry doesn't need any extra wear and tear. When the work is mandatory, he will be in attendance and on the field. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [GB - RB Kylin Hill still working his way back]( Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Ryan Wood Green Bay Packers RB Kylin Hill (knee) was limited to rehab work during the first week of OTAs. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Hill, a 2021 seventh-round pick out of Mississippi State, has quite a bit of natural talent as a runner. He impressed so much last year in the preseason that he made the 53-man roster. Hill injured his knee in late October last year and has been recovering ever since. We like his skill, so Fantasy GMs in super deep dynasty formats should keep an eye on Hill as he attempts to earn the spot behind Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon again this year. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [PIT - WR Diontae Johnson unhappy with contract]() Source: The Athletic - Mark Kaboly Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson is sitting out organized team activities because he's unhappy with his contract, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports. 'Johnson is unhappy with his current contract situation and trying to send a message through his lack of attendance,' Kaboly wrote, while also noting Johnson doesn't have much leverage. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Johnson can be unhappy, but he'll also have to be patient in order to get paid. Oh yeah, he'll have to produce at a high level as well. Historically, the Steelers do not extend big-money deals to wide receivers. We'll see if new Steelers GM Omar Khan runs things a bit differently - but we doubt it. Johnson is unlikely to return to the Steelers in 2023, and his play could get him a big free agent deal next offseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [CAR - Wanted Browns to Help Pick up QB Mayfield's Tab]( Source: Jonathan M. Alexander - Charlotte Observer Jonathan M. Alexander, from the Charlotte Observer, reports the Carolina Panthers wanted the Cleveland Browns to cover $13-14 million in a trade for QB Baker Mayfield. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Panthers are in the market for an upgrade over QB Sam Darnold. They do have interest in Mayfield, but they're not going to trade for him unless the price is right. Some have speculated since the Browns gave QB Deshaun Watson a fully guaranteed deal, that's impacted what other teams will do with them in trades. Essentially, teams like the Panthers or the Seahawks may just be waiting the Browns out and putting the squeeze on their salary cap situation. Stay tuned.
