Lots of things to be decided here in a couple of days. We've got the news and notes for you as always but first a non football thought. I love this [mic'd up video clip from Lee Smith.]( This one isn't football as much as it is life. Lee Smith is one of my favorite players in the league. This clip is one reason why. My takeaway on this was something I believe in strongly: Tell people how you feel about them. Smith was clearly happy to see a lot of his friends from Buffalo in this game and he wasn't shy about telling many he loved hem. Don't assume people know how you feel. We tell our children to "use their words". I think in many ways, that applies to adults too when it comes to telling folks you love them. Ok, off the soapbox there. Here's the News and Notes you need. Let's Go. [CHI - QB Justin Fields on COVID list]( Source: ChicagoBears.com Chicago Bears QB [Justin Fields](=) was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Jan. 6. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Just when you thought Fields could be out there in Week 18. This puts his status in doubt for Sunday's game. We might see Andy Dalton get another start in what should be Matt Nagy's final game as head coach for the Bears. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [PHI - RB Miles Sanders ruled out]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo Philadelphia Eagles RB [Miles Sanders](=) (hand) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 6, and has been ruled out for Week 18. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Not a surprise here. Kenneth Gainwell should see the bulk of the work. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [CHI - RB David Montgomery peaking]() Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports Chicago Bears RB [David Montgomery](=) has rushed 61 times for 169 yards and three scores while catching 14 balls for 101 yards the last three weeks. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Montgomery is the centerpiece of what the Bears want to do on offense. While their quarterback situation rotates through various players, Montgomery is there to be the steady force. Fantasy GMs didn't get the 1,000-yard season on the ground from Montgomery like they did last year but his outlook for 2022 looks like it's trending up. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [LAC - LA brings pair off COVID list](=) Source: NFLCommunications.com Los Angeles Chargers TE [Jared Cook](=) and LB Damon Lloyd were activated from the Reserve/COVID list on Wednesday, Jan. 5. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It looks like Cook will be out there for the Chargers in the season finale against the Raiders. He could have his standard large role for the Chargers and gives you a cheaper tight end to add to DFS lineups in Week 18. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [CLE - QB Baker Mayfield placed on IR]() Source: ClevelandBrowns.com Cleveland Browns QB [Baker Mayfield](=) (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Wednesday, Jan. 5. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mayfield's season is done, and he will miss the Week 18 matchup against the Bengals. Next season, the Browns are going to have competition for Mayfield in training camp. Who that is remains a mystery, but Mayfield will have to earn the starting job in 2022. He's in the final year of his rookie contract and could get paid in a big way if he stays healthy and plays up to expectations. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [CLE - RB Artavis Pierce joins Browns](=) Source: NFLCommunications.com The Cleveland Browns signed free agent RB Artavis Pierce (Bears) to the practice squad on Wednesday, Jan. 5. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] In crazy deep dynasty formats, we'll keep an eye on Pierce. Undrafted out of Oregon State in 2020, Pierce has the capability of being a three-down back at the pro level. [PIT - WR Diontae Johnson to COVID list]() Source: NFL Network - Aditi Kinkhabwala Pittsburgh Steelers WR [Diontae Johnson](=) was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Jan. 6. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There may not be enough time for Johnson to be cleared for Sunday's game against the Ravens. His season wraps up, and Fantasy GMs in PPR formats were generally happy with his production. Johnson, if he does miss Week 18 on the COVID list, finishes the 2021 season with 100 catches, 1,110 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [NYJ - QB Zach Wilson ending on high note]() Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports New York Jets QB [Zach Wilson](=) is 46-for-78 (58.9 percent) for 506 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions the last three games. He has also added 103 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Wilson has flashed as a rookie - not often, but there have been plays where you see the natural talent coming through. The Jets will continue to build around their 2021 top-2 pick, and Wilson's rushing ability gives him upside from a fantasy perspective as he continues to learn the pro game. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott on track to play]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo Dallas Cowboys RB [Ezekiel Elliott](=) (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 6, and is not on the injury report for Week 18. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Excellent news here for Elliott and the Cowboys. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [MIN - Minnesota brings two off of COVID IR](=) Source: NFLCommunications.com Minnesota Vikings QB [Kirk Cousins](=) and OT Brian O'Neill were activated from the Reserve/COVID list on Wednesday, Jan. 5. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Vikings coach Mike Zimmer insists that he's not going to play young players, like rookie QB Kellen Mond, in a meaningless Week 18 game. That means Cousins is going to be out there slinging the rock for the Vikings in the season finale. Cousins has a $45 million cap hit with $45 million remaining in dead money in 2022. That means he'll be back for one more season in Minnesota. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [KC - RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire to miss Week 18](=) Source: Chiefs.com Kansas City Chiefs RB [Clyde Edwards-Helaire](=) (shoulder) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 6, and has been ruled out for Week 18. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] As expected, Edwards-Helaire will miss this one. He should be available for the playoffs though. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [DET - WR Amon-Ra St. Brown making a name for himself]() Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports Detroit Lions WR [Amon-Ra St. Brown](=) has 25 catches for 292 yards and three touchdowns over the last three weeks. He also added a rushing touchdown. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Around the time Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties, St. Brown started to perform at a high level. Not many players are bright spots for the Lions, but the rookie St. Brown certainly is. He's in line to be drafted as a WR3 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2022. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of Footballguys.
