[] 1. [NE - Mac Jones era begins]() Source: The Boston Globe - Jim McBride New England Patriots QB Mac Jones is the starting quarterback after QB Cam Newton was released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Everyone knew that Jones was the quarterback of the future for the Patriots, but with the release of Newton that future is now. Jones is in the perfect system for his skill set and is a streaming option for Fantasy GMs in redraft leagues. The Patriots are going to be a run-heavy offense, but Jones will be able to spread the ball around to all the weapons in the passing game. We'll see if a favorite emerges over the first few weeks of the season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [NE - QB Cam Newton released]() Source: The Boston Globe - Jim McBride New England Patriots QB Cam Newton was released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Patriots send shock-waves around the league with this news. Newton had looked good in camp, although he did miss a week of practice this month due to a COVID test misunderstanding. He's not the same player he used to be, but Newton was looking for a bounce-back season after a subpar 2020 in New England. Reports and speculation are already swirling about a landing spot - perhaps with the Cowboys. Newton won't stay jobless for long, so stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [HOU - QB Deshaun Watson staying](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson isn't expected to be traded by the 4 p.m. cut-down deadline Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Texans are asking for quite a bit for Watson according to reports. It's difficult for another team like the Dolphins or the Panthers to give that up given Watson's ongoing legal situation. If he's with the Texans, Watson will be inactive every week and we don't think he ever takes another snap for the team. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [NO - WR Michael Thomas staying on PUP]() Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (ankle) is expected to remain on the Physically Unable to Perform list and miss the first six weeks of the season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. The Saints have an early bye week, and Thomas could only miss five games. Thomas had ankle surgery late because of miscommunication with the team and has been on the road to recovery over the last month or so. After he's out six weeks, the Saints will have a few weeks to decide what to do with him in terms of activating him or putting him on Injured Reserve. It sounds like he should return after that six week absence. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [NYJ - Kenny Yeboah cut](=) Source: New York Post - Brian Costello New York Jets TE Kenny Yeboah was waived Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Yeboah is a talented "F" tight end who can attack a deep seam. We'll monitor him but only in crazy deep dynasty formats. Expect Yeboah to land on a practice squad somewhere. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [GB - Two Packers dropped]( Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Ryan Wood Green Bay Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown and PK JJ Molson were released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] St. Brown was a sixth-round pick of the Packers in the 2018 NFL draft. He's got a nice size/speed combination but over three seasons he hasn't done much with the Packers. Ankle and knee problems have limited him to 24 games over three seasons but if healthy he could give some team depth out there. There's a chance he returns to the practice squad. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [CHI - RB Ryan Nall let go]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Chicago Bears RB Ryan Nall was released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Nall is a big-bodied back who has stuck with the Bears since coming into the league as a UDFA out of Oregon State in 2018. He's a special teams player with only 13 career touches on offense. We expect Nall to land on the practice squad before the start of the regular season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [LAC - Tyron Johnson waived]( Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper Los Angeles Chargers WR Tyron Johnson was waived Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The addition of Josh Palmer via the draft and the play of Jalen Guyton means the Chargers could move on from Johnson. He's a deep threat with a nice size/speed combination. We'll see him land on a practice squad as a developmental player somewhere. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [NYJ - Vyncint Smith let go]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero New York Jets WR Vyncint Smith was waived Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Smith has plenty of speed and can be used as a deep threat. Some team out there might want that skill set kicking around on the practice squad. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [CIN - Pooka Williams waived]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Cincinnati Bengals RB Pooka Williams was waived Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. He will be a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here, but expect Williams to get stashed on the practice squad. A hamstring injury limited him to one preseason carry, but Williams is interesting enough with his quickness and receiving ability to keep around as a developmental prospect. [] 11. [CHI - WR Riley Ridley released](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Chicago Bears WR Riley Ridley was released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ridley was a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and now is looking for a new team. He's only appeared in 10 games over the last two seasons and is unlikely to be more than depth if/when another team signs him. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [DET - QB Tim Boyle out 6-8 weeks]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo Detroit Lions QB Tim Boyle (thumb) will miss six to eight weeks following thumb surgery. There was a chance he was lost for the year. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Boyle was competing for the backup job behind Jared Goff. That job now goes to David Blough while Boyle recovers from thumb surgery. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [JAX - WR Phillip Dorsett released](=) Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler Jacksonville Jaguars WR Phillip Dorsett was released Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The former first-round pick for the Colts (2015), Dorsett missed all of the 2020 season due to a foot issue. He's a speedy deep threat but is running out of chances to stick in the NFL. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [DEN - Denver trades Trinity Benson]() Source: DetroitLions.com Denver Broncos WR Trinity Benson was traded to the Detroit Lions Tuesday, Aug. 31, in exchange for a 2022 fifth-round draft choice and a 2022 seventh-round draft choice. The Lions will also receive a 2023 sixth-round draft choice in the trade. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Broncos have a ton of depth at the wide receiver position, and Benson had been a standout for them through OTAs, minicamp and training camp. They'll move forward with Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton as their starters. Tim Patrick and K.J. Hamler will get on the field to move the ball as well. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [DET - Trinity Benson joins Detroit]() Source: DetroitLions.com Denver Broncos WR Trinity Benson was acquired by the Detroit Lions Tuesday, Aug. 31, in exchange for a 2022 fifth-round draft choice and a 2022 seventh-round draft choice. The Lions will also receive a 2023 sixth-round draft choice in the trade. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Benson could move up the depth chart quickly for the Lions. They don't have a ton of talent at the wide receiver position, and Benson was a standout for the Broncos through training camp and the preseason. Benson has quickness to his game and can threaten a defense vertically. He has great 'my ball' mentality and will attack the ball when it's in the air. Dynasty GMs should be all over Benson and if he moves up the depth chart then he could have some 'what the heck' flex value in redraft leagues. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 16. [NYJ - TE Chris Herndon traded by Jets](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New York Jets TE Chris Herndon was traded to the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to sources. The Jets will receive draft pick compensation in the trade. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tyler Kroft was playing ahead of Herndon and seemed to be a preferred target for rookie QB Zach Wilson. He might be worth considering as a streamer in crazy deep leagues. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 17. [NYJ - RB Josh Adams does not make roster]() Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo New York Jets RB Josh Adams was released Tuesday, Aug. 31. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Adams is a poor man's version of Gus Edwards, and the Jets decided they didn't need that on the final roster. The Jets have a backfield that contains Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, Michael Carter, and La'Mical Perine so it was tough for Adams to break through. Carter is the player that excites us the most from that group because of his big-play ability. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 18. [IND - QB Brett Hundley does not make team]() Source: The Indianapolis Star - Jim Ayello Indianapolis Colts QB Brett Hundley was waived Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Hundley is gone and that means the Colts are rolling forward with Jacob Eason as the primary backup to Carson Wentz. Eason will start if Wentz can't begin the regular season. His status is unknown at this time although there is hope he will be ready for the season opener. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 19. [MIN - Minnesota acquires TE Chris Herndon](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New York Jets TE Chris Herndon was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to sources. The Jets will receive draft pick compensation in the trade. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Herndon has always had physical talent but he's yet to put it all together in the pros. With the injury to Irv Smith, the Vikings needed to make a move at the tight end position. He's going to compete with Tyler Conklin while Smith is out recovery from his meniscus injury.
