[IND - QB Carson Wentz in line for opener]( Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) is trending to open the season as the starter following foot surgery, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the Colts here. Wentz underwent surgery in early August and many feared that he would miss time into the regular season. That may not be the case now. Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger are competing to establish a pecking order behind Wentz and one of those guys would start if Wentz does have to miss time. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [BAL - Rashod Bateman update]() Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens WR Rashod Bateman (groin) will miss 'a number of weeks' due to a groin injury, according to head coach John Harbaugh. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ravens fans and Fantasy GMs are dismayed with this news. Bateman could be ready for the start of the regular season but that seems like a reach. The Ravens need to be careful with the rookie as he deals with this injury as they don't want to re-aggravate it. There's a chance Bateman misses time in the regular season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [MIN - Justin Jefferson on the field]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson (shoulder) participated in some individual drills at half speed during practice Wednesday, Aug. 11. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. The Vikings are holding joint practices with the Broncos over the next two days. They'll play each other on Saturday, and Jefferson is unlikely to play in the preseason opener. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [BUF - Zack Moss dealing with hamstring injury]() Source: The Athletic - Joe Buscaglia Buffalo Bills RB Zack Moss (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury a practice Tuesday, Aug. 10, and will not practice Wednesday, Aug. 11. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Fantasy GMs are upset with this latest injury for Moss. He's talented and the Bills want him to be the lead back but he seems to get banged up more than you'd like. According to head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills will take it 'one day at a time' with Moss. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [LAR - Xavier Jones carving out a role](=) Source: RamsWire - Cameron DaSilva Los Angeles Rams RB Xavier Jones is someone the team is 'expecting to count on throughout the season,' according to head coach Sean McVay. Per McVay, Jones has impressed in pass protection and with his overall awareness. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Jones is expected to be the primary backup to Darrell Henderson in 2021. With Henderson's propensity to get banged up, we could see Jones step into a larger role. Even with a healthy Henderson, the Rams have already hinted they'll try to keep their starter fresh and limit his touches compared to other lead backs in the NFL. Jones is certainly a player we're watching closely in the preseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [IND - Indy extends coach, GM]( Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich and general manager Chris Ballard agreed to contract extensions Wednesday, Aug. 11, through the 2026 season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ballard is one of the best GMs in the NFL. He's put together several strong draft classes for the Colts and now just needs to find the right QB. They added Carson Wentz this offseason, and we'll see if he can have a career resurgence (when healthy). Reich was hired the year after Ballard and they are moving forward for years to come at the helm of the Colts. [ARI - WR Andy Isabella reinstated]() Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss Arizona Cardinals WR Andy Isabella was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aug. 11. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Isabella still has a ton of speed but he is now buried on the depth chart. He's competing to be the no.5 receiver for the Cardinals behind DeAndre Hopkins, A.J. Green, Christian Kirk and rookie Rondale Moore. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [MIA - Tua Tagovailoa to play Saturday]() Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa will play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 14. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's a make-or-break year for Tagovailoa in 2021. We'll see if the team asks him to be aggressive in his first preseason game. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [DET - Detroit parts with Michael Warren]( Source: Around The NFL Detroit Lions RB Michael Warren (undisclosed) was waived with an injury designation Wednesday, Aug. 11. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Lions made a move to add Javon Leake, and he takes the place of Warren. We'll see if Warren can catch on with another team as running back injuries hit around the preseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [DET - Javon Leake catches on with Detroit]( Source: Around The NFL Free-agent RB Javon Leake (Washington) signed an undisclosed contract with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, Aug. 11. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Lions need another running back in the room, so they look to Leake a couple of weeks into training camp. Starter D'Andre Swift has been extremely limited in practice due to a groin injury. Swift is a RB2 for Fantasy GMs, but that status is touchy right now because of his groin problem. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [BUF - QB Josh Allen to sit out preseason game]() Source: ESPN.com - Marcel Louis-Jacques Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen will not play in the first preseason game, according to head coach Sean McDermott. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. Allen is a pro's pro and doesn't need every preseason rep. They'll likely get him work in the next game. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [NYJ - Denzel Mims' offseason demise spurred by illness]( Source: ESPN.com - Rich Cimini New York Jets WR Denzel Mims ate bad salmon during the spring, triggering a bout of food poisoning that caused him to lose 20 pounds, vomit for two weeks and required antibiotics because of an intestinal infection. It reportedly took him two more months to regain the weight. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mims has talent but he's slipped down the Jets depth chart. He's not a great fit for the system of the new staff (Shanahan/Kubiak offense) so perhaps a trade would be best for both sides. We'll see if Mims can bounce back from this bad offseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We know you have lots of choices out there and we're honored you'd spend a part of your season with us. Have a great Thursday and we'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
