We've talked a lot about "Value" in drafting. It's the key to a great draft. Sometimes that means a player who may deliver third-round value that you can draft in the fifth. For this feature, we asked our Footballguys to do deeper and to identify players further down most draft lists who can still bring value. Here's what they said about the quarterbacks that might fit that description. B. [Quarterback Contracts to Monitor](
Our Jordan McNamara takes a look at 2022 free agents, cut candidates, and extension candidates at the quarterback position that can reshape your dynasty teams. [] INSIDE THIS ISSUE 1. [] 1. [NE - Jones vs Newton a True QB Competition]( Source: Mike Giardi - NFL Network Mike Giardi, from NFL Network, reports the training camp battle between QB Cam Newton and rookie first-round pick Mac Jones will be a "true quarterback competition." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll see how this competition shakes out in training camp. So many factors were against Newton last year (teammates opting out, COVID) and there are some who think he's in for a bounce-back season. Newton had better be on his game or the Patriots can turn to Jones who they see as a potential quarterback of the future. Jones has a much different game from Newton, so expect the offense to be tweaked depending on which quarterback is under center. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [CIN - Mixon in For Largest Workload of His Career?](=) Source: Paul Dehner - The Athletic Paul Dehner, from The Athletic, speculates that Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon will see the largest workload of his career in 2021. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Bengals are setting up to give Mixon the ball early and often. With Gio Bernard gone, more of the receiving responsibilities out of the backfield will fall on Mixon, although rookie RB Chris Evans could get some looks there. Mixon is seen as a low-end RB1 by Fantasy GMs, and he is going to have the role to produce at that level this season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [GB - WR Davante Adams wants to stay]( Source: BleacherReport.com - Graham GSM Matthews Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams said that he hopes and plans to stay with the Packers. 'That's the plan, man,' Adams said. 'I'm not planning on going anywhere. That's only one piece of it, though. Obviously the quarterback situation helps it, but the stars got to align across the board as far as contractually. We'll figure all that stuff out and let it happen. I'll be at training camp like I said regardless, we're going to play the season, and we'll see how all of that pans out.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Adams is saying all the right things at the moment. He's watching the Aaron Rodgers situation, and that could heavily influence what kind of deal he's willing to take from the Packers. He's got a cap hit of around $16.7 million in 2021 (the final year of his deal), and Adams should be in line for a new contract that pays him around $20 million annually. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [IND - Regression for Jonathan Taylor?]( Source: The Athletic - Larry Holder Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor is one of 30 running backs since 2000 to top 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie, but only five backs in that group had more rushing yards in their second season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Taylor got stronger as the season went on in 2020 and his Week 17 performance against the Jaguars (253 yards rushing) put him over 1,000 for the season. Taylor joins Saquon Barkley, Kareem Hunt, Eddie Lacy, Doug Martin, Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, and LaDainian Tomlinson as the last rookie running backs since 2000 to rush for over 1,100 yards, have double-digit touchdowns, and reach 35-plus receptions. With momentum heading into this season - and 17 games to be played - projecting Taylor to surpass his rushing total from last year makes sense. His current ADP is RB8 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues and he's the type of player who could push to be a top-5 fantasy running back in 2021. Most backs in his situation don't have more yards in their second season, but we think Taylor can be an exception. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [NFL - WR Demaryius Thomas retires]() Source: The Denver Post - Ryan O'Halloran Former Denver Broncos WR [Demaryius Thomas](=) announced his retirement Monday, June 28. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Thomas, a first-round pick of the Broncos in 2010, was one of the best receivers in the league when he was at the top of his game. The second-leading receiver in franchise history, Thomas was selected to five Pro Bowls during his nine seasons with the Broncos. He was part of the winningest four-year period in team history from 2012-15 (55-17), winning two AFC Championships and Super Bowl 50. Thomas should be inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in the near future. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [CIN - Chris Evans has OC intrigued](=) Source: 1 No Source Cincinnati Bengals RB Chris Evans has impressed offensive coordinator Brian Callahan with his receiving skills. 'He's got the most natural hands for a running back that I've ever been around,' Callahan said. 'He's so natural at catching the ball and he can track the ball down the field. A lot of times, running backs struggle down the field. He doesn't. So he could be a unique piece for us.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Evans is a good receiving option out of the backfield, and he's a hard-charging runner who wastes little motion. We'll see how he works his way into the mix behind starter Joe Mixon in 2021. Evans has talent but a suspension for the entire 2019 season held him back during his college career at Michigan. He seems like a role player at the NFL level, but we'll see if there's more with his game in training camp and the preseason. [MIN - QB Kirk Cousins on point in 2020](=) Source: ProFootballReference.com Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins was on target on 81.3 percent of his throws in 2020 - the best mark among quarterbacks with at least 50 pass attempts - according to Pro Football Reference. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Cousins knows the Shanahan/Kubiak offense like the back of his hand. The comfort level in the offense gives him great confidence as a passer, and Cousins has some great targets to throw to. With Klint Kubiak taking over for his father Gary as OC in 2021, expect more of the same from Cousins and the Vikings passing attack. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [ATL - RB Mike Davis difficult to corral](=) Source: ProFootballReference.com Atlanta Falcons RB Mike Davis broke a tackle once every 7.9 rushing attempts in 2020 as a member of the Carolina Panthers - the best rate among all qualified running backs - according to Pro Football Reference. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mike Davis has always been a strong runner. Dating back to his days in college at South Carolina, Davis breaks tackles regularly. He filled in nicely for an injured Christian McCaffrey last season and gets a shot as the lead back for the Falcons this year. Davis could post career-best numbers as a rusher this season with that role, but he may not be able to match the 59 catches he had in 2020. Projecting him as a low-end RB2/flex option feels right. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [GB - WR Winfree to Make Run at Rotation]( Source: Rob Demovsky - ESPN Rob Demovsky, from ESPN, reports Green Bay Packers WR Juwann Winfree looks like he'll make a strong run at a spot in the rotation behind the top four receivers on the depth chart. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Winfree, a sixth-round pick out of Colorado in 2019, has appeared in five games during his pro career but has yet to catch a pass. He flashed in training camp and preseason (2019) with the Broncos but ended up latching on with the Packers last year as a practice squad player. Winfree has body control and crisp route-running ability, and he's a player we appreciate in super deep dynasty formats. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [LVR - Henry Ruggs disappeared as rookie]() Source: The Athletic - Ted Nguyen Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III topped 100 receiving yards in just one of the 13 games he started as a rookie. He finished with eight yards or fewer five times and never had more than three catches in a game. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Ruggs was the first receiver selected in the 2020 NFL draft, a class of wide receivers that many claimed was the best in history. He's a speed demon but finding consistency within that offense proved to be a problem for Ruggs as a rookie. All offseason reports have been positive about Ruggs and the role he'll play in 2021. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has publicly stated that Ruggs "looks better" and will have a larger role this season. That makes him an interesting boom-bust pick late in your fantasy drafts. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [GB - TE Robert Tonyan extremely dependable in 2020]( Source: ProFootballReference.com Green Bay Packers TE Robert Tonyan caught 52 of his 59 targets and did not record a drop in 2020. In addition, Aaron Rodgers recorded a passer rating of 147.6 when targeting Tonyan. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There is no doubt that Tonyan is a favorite target of Rodgers. There is plenty of doubt as to where Rodgers will play in 2021. If Rodgers stays with the Packers, Tonyan's fantasy value is high as he finished as the no.3 fantasy tight end last season. If Rodgers is traded or decides to hold out, then Tonyan's fantasy value takes a hit. This uncertainty has impacted the way Fantasy GMs are looking at Tonyan as his current ADP is TE14 (12.05) in 12-team PPR leagues. We project him as a top-10 fantasy tight end for the upcoming season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks.
