You want to avoid players who will be drafted too highly and underperform their draft position. We asked the Footballguys Staff to give us their picks for players who they think fit this description at the running back position and this is what they said. C. [Stockpiling Can Be Your Salvation]() In this edition of the Gut Check, our Matt Waldman demonstrates the value of stockpiling a position in Dynasty, Devy, and Redraft formats. D. [Dynasty Players To Target and Avoid in Our Projections: Running Backs]() The difference between startup draft cost and our 2021 projections is a critical inefficiency to exploit at the running back position. Our Jordan McNamara breaks it down. [] INSIDE THIS ISSUE 1. [WAS - Antonio Gibson showing growth](#1) 2. [WAS - More catches for Antonio Gibson?](#2) 3. [LVR - TE Darren Waller headed higher?](#3) 4. [WAS - Antonio Gibson showing growth]() Source: ESPN.com - John Keim Washington Football Team RB Antonio Gibson has displayed growth and maturity in offseason practices, and it has the team's coaches excited about his -- and the offense's -- prospects for the 2021 season. 'You can tell he's matured, got a better feel and understanding,' Washington coach Ron Rivera said of Gibson during minicamp this month. 'Those natural instincts that you look for, the intangibles that guys that have been playing the positions their whole career naturally have. You start to see those come to light with Antonio. It's exciting.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Gibson was a converted wide receiver who is still learning the nuances of the running back position. He's got speed, vision and instincts with the rock and can make defenders miss with power or moves. Washington's running back coach, Randy Jordan, says Gibson could catch more passes this season. Gibson's talent and role within the offense make him an RB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs. Check the companion story today where running backs coach Randy Jordan heaps praise on Gibson. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [WAS - More catches for Antonio Gibson?](=) Source: WashingtonWire - Bryan Manning Washington Football Team RB Antonio Gibson has untapped potential as a receiver, according to running backs coach Randy Jordan. 'I think the biggest thing for him is utilizing his ability to catch the ball because he has caught the ball in college,' Jordan said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No surprise here. Gibson is a converted wide receiver who only caught 36 passes last year for Washington in 14 games. He could push for around 50 receptions this year, especially in a 17-game season. Gibson can be the centerpiece of Washington's offense and his workload and natural talent make him an RB2 with upside in any format. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [LVR - TE Darren Waller headed higher?]( Source: The Athletic Las Vegas Raiders TE Darren Waller should improve on his career-high 1,196 receiving yards he posted in 2020, according to beat reporter VicTafur of The Athletic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's not outlandish to think Waller could continue taking his game to the next level. He has yet to peak in the NFL and is arguably the best tight end in the league. The converted wide receiver from Georgia Tech has worked diligently to improve his game as a tight end for years. The Raiders are benefactors of that hard work, and Waller may not level off. Fantasy GMs are taking him off the board at TE2 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [NYJ - Michael Carter has chance to start?]( Source: JetsWire - Tyler Calvaruso New York Jets RB Michael Carter could push for the starting running back job if he performs well during training camp and the preseason, in the opinion of JetsWire's Tyler Calvaruso. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Jets don't have a set starter so there's a chance for Carter to get the top job. He's super quick and lightning fast, and Carter eats up yards quickly before defenders can even notice. Carter can be dangerous in space but is not a pile pusher who can run inside with success. He also needs to learn how to protect the passer as his blocking ability is a big question mark. The rookie will compete with guys like Ty Johnson and Tevin Coleman for the starting job. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [BAL - Quick impact for Rashod Bateman]() Source: The Athletic - Jeff Zrebiec Baltimore Ravens WR Rashod Bateman looks ready to be 'a significant contributor from Day 1,' according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That makes sense. Bateman is a refined route runner who can gain separation against most any coverage. His ability to get open and strong hands should make him a trusted target for QB Lamar Jackson in 2021. The Ravens aren't going to fill the air with footballs, so that limits the fantasy potential of Bateman as a rookie. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [BAL - Jaylon Moore's spot in jeopardy?]() Source: The Athletic - Jeff Zrebiec Baltimore Ravens WR Jaylon Moore is behind a number of other receivers on the depth chart, and it is 'hard to imagine a scenario' where Moore makes the roster, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Moore was undrafted in 2020 and is a long shot for the 53-man roster. He played in college for the UT Martin Skyhawks where he showed off track speed and a nose for the end zone. We'll see if Moore can earn a spot on the practice squad. [TB - Limited role for Ke'Shawn Vaughn?](=) Source: Buccaneers.com - Scott Smith Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ke'Shawn Vaughn could spend most of his time on special teams in 2021, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'Ke'Shawn's made a nice move, but he has to be a better special teams players right now because of what's in front of him,' Arians said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Vaughn is buried on the depth chart when it comes to the running back room. The Buccaneers still have Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones ahead of him on the depth chart. This offseason they added Gio Bernard who is ahead of Vaughn on the depth chart as well. Vaughn will work as a special teams player and has to patiently work for any larger role on offense. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [TB - QB Tom Brady: Still much to prove]( Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady still says he has ample motivation entering his 22nd NFL season. 'It's hard to walk away from something that you still feel like you can do and you want to do,' Brady said recently on The Late Late Show with James Corden. 'So it's not about proving it to others what you can do, it's more about proving it to yourself. And I still feel like even though I'll be 44 this year, I still have a chance to still prove it to myself that I can still do it at 44, because I really worked to a point where I can still do it at this age.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tom Brady is like Michael Jordan - he can use anything to get motivated...fiercely motivated on the field. He's proven people wrong for years and will continue to do so. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [BUF - RB Devin Singletary faster in 2021?]( Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown Buffalo Bills RB Devin Singletary is 'going to be way faster' this season, according to his personal trainer Nick Hicks. 'Speed was the number one thing that he wanted to work on,' said Hicks. 'He's very quick, extremely agile, but speed was the main reason why he reached out to us to come train with us.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Singletary looked good as a rookie in 2019, but the Bills still went out and added Zack Moss to compete with him in 2020. This year, the split in the backfield will continue and Moss will likely get red zone work. Add in the rushing ability of QB Josh Allen and you can see how Singletary's workload could follow the pattern established last season. If Moss is healthy, Singletary is more of a RB4/flex option for Fantasy GMs. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [GB - WR Davante Adams opens extension talks](=) Source: PackersWire - Zach Kruse Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams has opened negotiations for a contract extension. Adams confirmed that QB Aaron Rodgers' situation will have an effect on his talks. 'That'll play into it, but there's been talks, just really just talks, but we haven't really done anything or talked about anything that's worth mentioning,' Adams said. 'It's kind of just been the beginning stage of talking, and we'll figure out what happens. Hopefully, something gets figured out, but I'm just there to play ball either way. That stuff will take care of itself eventually.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Adams and Rodgers are best buddies on the field and have strong chemistry off the field as well. Rodgers does not want to return to the Packers, and if he's traded then Adams may want to shut down any sort of extension talks. There are plenty of things up in the air for the Packers right now, so let's put a pin in this Adams extension talk and stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [CHI - Expectations high for David Montomery]( Source: The Athletic Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery led the team in 2020 with 1,070 rushing yards, 1,508 yards from scrimmage and 10 total touchdowns, but the team expects Montgomery to 'surpass' those numbers in his third season, according to a recent article in the Athletic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Montgomery should be the centerpiece of what the Bears do on offense. He's certainly capable of carrying a large workload and if/when rookie QB Justin Fields is the starter the team will need the big back to lead the way. Montgomery's usage in the passing game is the biggest question mark as Tarik Cohen is back and healthy. He caught over 50 passes last year but might be more around 30 catches this season with Cohen getting on the field as a change-of-pace back. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [CLE - QB Baker Mayfield's agent optimistic about deal]() Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has a good chance to receive a long-term contract extension this offseason, according to his agent. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mayfield is in line for a new contract that should make him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league. His agent says the contract situation is in the team's hands right now. Some speculate a new deal could be reached before the start of the regular season. We're also watching contract situations from other QBs in Mayfield's draft class like Josh Allen (Bills) and Lamar Jackson (Ravens).
