[NYJ - Five players trying out](#6) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 1. [NYJ - Zach Wilson plans to earn QB job](=) Source: JetsWire - Tyler Calvaruso New York Jets QB Zach Wilson said he does not expect the Jets to hand him the starting quarterback job, and he plans to earn the job during offseason workouts and training camp. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That's a good mindset to have but we (and everyone else) would be shocked if he didn't start immediately as a rookie. The Jets have cleared the way for Wilson to be the starter from day one. They have no experience in strong-armed, second-year pro James Morgan (fourth-round pick in 2020) and veteran Mike White behind him on the depth chart. Wilson should be the guy from the jump and from a fantasy perspective there is QB2 upside because of his rushing ability. He has a current ADP of QB21 (12.11) in 12-team PPR leagues. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [CAR - Chuba Hubbard could land backup gig]() Source: SportingNews.com - Vinnie Iyer Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard 'is a good bet to displace' RB Rodney Smith and Reggie Bonnafon RB as the primary backup to RB Christian McCaffrey in 2021, according to Vinnie Iyer of SportingNews.com. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That sounds about right. The Panthers don't have much behind McCaffrey with Mike Davis (Falcons) moving on in free agency. Hubbard is a hard-charging running back who wastes little motion with the ball. He did have a problem with fumbling in college, so that will have to be cleaned up before he's trusted as the no.2 back on the depth chart. Hubbard could have handcuff value if he wins that spot in training camp. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [CAR - Kevin Thomson to try out]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Undrafted free-agent QB Kevin Thomson (Sacramento State) is scheduled to participate in the Carolina Panthers rookie minicamp next week on a tryout basis, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Thomson could have stayed in college with Washington for what would have been his eighth season of eligibility. That is not a typo. Originally starting his college career at UNLV in 2014, Thomson was hurt and transferred to Sacramento State where he became an FCS All-American. He then transferred to Washington where he competed for playing time but another injury knocked him out of the final four games of the year. For those keeping score at home, that's six seasons, five coaching staffs and three universities. Thomson is a long-shot, dual-threat quarterback but he certainly did not give up on his dream of playing in the NFL. [DET - Amon-Ra St. Brown to play early?]() Source: SportingNews.com - Vinnie Iyer Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown could 'turn into a key slot target' as a rookie after being the only receiver selected by the team in the 2021 NFL Draft, according to Vinnie Iyer of SportingNews.com. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] St. Brown has plenty of experience lining up out wide and in the slot. He's capable of running the full route tree and can win contested catches. Separation at the pro level may be a problem for him, so keep an eye on that in training camp reports. The Lions are desperate for wide receiver help, and St. Brown is consistent and reliable. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [CHI - Khalil Herbert a handful to bring down]() Source: Pro Football Focus - Michael Renner Chicago Bears RB Khalil Herbert broke 18 tackles on 42 carries for Kansas in 2019 and averaged 7.6 yards per carry and 4.7 yards after contact for Virginia Tech in his final collegiate season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Herbert was one of our favorite sleeper backs in this class. He's got a natural feel for running the football and can work well as a receiver out of the backfield too. Herbert will work his way into the mix behind starter David Montgomery with the Bears, and we certainly appreciate him in dynasty formats. All he needs is a shot and he could shine with a lead role. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [NYJ - Five players trying out]( Source: JetsWire - Tyler Calvaruso Free-agent WRs Trevor Davis (Washington), WR Steven Mitchell Jr. (Texans) and WR Damion Willis (Jaguars) participated in the New York Jets rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Undrafted free-agent TE Daniel Crawford (Northern Illinois) and DT Mustafa Johnson (Colorado) also tried out for the team. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Willis is the player to watch here. Undrafted out of Troy in 2019, Willis looked like a player to monitor in deep dynasty formats with the Bengals. He had two starts as a rookie but did not make the team in 2020. Instead, Willis was picked up by the Browns and then released with a failed physical designation. He signed with the Jaguars practice squad late last year and spent about a month on the team. We'll see if he can impress enough at this tryout to earn a chance at a spot with the Jets in the offseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family.
