[PIT - Five signed by Steelers] 15. [MIA - WR Jarvis Landry entering contract year] --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. [ATL - WR Julio Jones in rare postseason company] Source: ESPN Stats and Information Atlanta Falcons WR [Julio Jones] became one of three players in NFL history to have multiple postseason games with at least 180 receiving yards following his performance in the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers. The other two are retired WRs Jerry Rice and Fred Biletnikoff. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Like those two, Jones should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday. The Patriots should scheme to take Jones away, so expecting 180 plus in the Super Bowl may not be realistic. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 2. [WAS - QB Kirk Cousins should return] Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones Washington Redskins QB [Kirk Cousins] is expected to return to the Redskins, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Cousins will be on the free-agent market this offseason. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Cousins is set to be on the open market, but we think Washington finds a way to keep him around. That may be through placing the franchise tag on him for the second year in a row. They could always come to an agreement on a new long-term contract as well. There's also the buzz building about the 49ers making a run at Cousins -- even if he's tagged -- if (when?) Kyle Shanahan becomes their new head coach. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 3. [OAK - DE Khalil Mack also a priority] Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair Oakland Raiders DE Khalil Mack could be in negotiations for a contract extension in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mack's contract is likely to push into or past the type of money Von Miller got from the Broncos. A first-round pick in 2014, the Raiders have an option in 2018 so they basically control his rights for two years. With 30 sacks in three years, the Raiders might want to get something done ASAP before his price continues to climb. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 4. [OAK - QB Derek Carr extension important to Oakland] Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair Oakland Raiders QB [Derek Carr] could be in negotiations for a contract extension in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie. Carr is heading into a contract year in 2017. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Carr was a second-round pick, so there is no fifth-year option for one of the best young passers in the NFL. He was in the discussion for NFL MVP before a finger injury held him back and a broken leg ended his season. The Raiders have over $46 million in cap space for 2017, so they've got more than enough money to get him a deal that likely pays him over $20 million annually. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 5. [DAL - Zack Martin's option will be exercised] Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George Dallas Cowboys OG Zack Martin's fifth-year option will be exercised, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. 'A big priority for us is to keep Zack around,' Jones said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Martin is one of the best in the game, so the Cowboys should most certainly exercise his fifth-year option. Next, the two sides need to work in 2017 to get Martin a new long-term deal. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 6. [DAL - Dallas wants to re-sign receivers] Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WRs [Terrance Williams] and [Brice Butler] will hopefully be re-signed this offseason, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Butler has the speed to take off the top of the defense, and they should be able to keep him around at a good price. Williams perhaps has more potential, and maybe a new start somewhere else would do him some good. If he's happy with his no.2 role behind Dez Bryant, then Williams could stick with Dallas. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 7. [DAL - DE Demarcus Lawrence will have surgery] Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence (back) will undergo back surgery this offseason, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. Lawrence underwent back surgery last offseason as well. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] A second-round pick out of Boise State in 2014, Lawrence only had one sack for the Cowboys this year in nine games. In the final year of his rookie deal, it would be good for Lawrence to play a full season and produce better numbers as he'll likely hit free agency in 2018. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 8. [GB - Two players signed by Packers] Source: Packers.com Green Bay Packers WR Antwan Goodley and TE Beau Sandland were signed to Reserve/Future deals Tuesday, Jan. 24. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Undrafted out of Baylor in 2015, Goodley has been on three teams during his short pro career. He's got the speed to get by defenders quickly, and Goodley has the ability to help as a return man too. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 9. [PIT - RB Karlos Williams' suspension almost done] Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler Pittsburgh Steelers RB [Karlos Williams] has one game remaining on his 10-game suspension. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It was originally speculated that Williams had four games remaining. This is great news for Williams if he can get in shape, stay in shape and produce on the field. Williams will be competing for a reserve role with the Steelers this year. He will be eligible to return for Week 2 of the 2017 regular season. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 10. [NFL - Two teams meet with Taywan Taylor] Source: The Baltimore Times - Turron Davenport Western Kentucky WR Taywan Taylor met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders during Senior Bowl festivities Monday, Jan. 23. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Over the last two seasons, Taylor has over 3,000 yards receiving and 33 receiving touchdowns. Prior to the 2016 season, Chase Goodbread (of NFL.com) ranked Taylor as one of the 16 most freakish athletes in college football. He's considered a third- or fourth-round prospect in the 2017 NFL draft. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 11. [NE - QB Jimmy Garoppolo may not fetch first-rounder?] Source: MMQB - Andrew Brandt New England Patriots QB [Jimmy Garoppolo] is expected to a hot name on the trade market this offseason, but the MMQB's Andrew Brandt believes it is 'delusional' to think another team will hand over a first-round pick for the backup signal-caller. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Garoppolo was a second-round pick for the Patriots in 2014, and he may not be able to draw a higher pick from any team interested in trading for him. There are a few backup QBs around the league that have some trade appeal, but these type of deals don't materialize often. If the Pats can't find a good price for Garoppolo, he could play out the last year of his rookie contract in 2017. They would get a premium compensatory pick when Garoppolo left (likely with a large contract) in 2018 free agency. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 12. [PIT - Pittsburgh hopeful about WR Martavis Bryant] Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette Suspended Pittsburgh Steelers WR [Martavis Bryant] applied for reinstatement early this month, but head coach Mike Tomlin said while he is 'hopeful', he is also in 'wait-and-see mode' in regards to his potential return to the team. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Getting Bryant back would greatly help the Steelers offense. When healthy and not suspended, Bryant is a dangerous weapon who can make field-flipping plays early and often. The league will examine his current situation and likely make a decision before the start of the 2017 season. He could even be back for OTAs or minicamp this spring. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 13. [PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger uncertain about future] Source: 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh Steelers QB [Ben Roethlisberger] hinted retirement was an option when he joined The Cook and Poni Show on 93.7 The Fan on Tuesday, Jan. 24. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Calm down Steelers fans, this isn't the first time Roethlisberger has considered retirement according to head coach Mike Tomlin. He'll likely come back for his age-35 season. Roethlisberger would have to return a large portion of his signing bonus if he did retire. He's on the books for $18.2 million in 2017, and there's $18.6 million remaining in dead money. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 14. [PIT - Five signed by Steelers] Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler Free-agent RB Gus Johnson (Chargers), RB Brandon Brown-Dukes (Steelers), RB Dreamius Smith (Steelers), WR Dez Stewart (Packers) and WR Marcus Tucker (Steelers) were signed to future contracts Tuesday, Jan. 24. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tucker was invited as a tryout player by the Steelers after going undrafted out of Northern Michigan in 2016. He had a few catches during the preseason and spent a couple of months (November, December) on their practice squad. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 15. [MIA - WR Jarvis Landry entering contract year] Source: Palm Beach Post - Jason Lieser Miami Dolphins WR [Jarvis Landry] is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2017, and he's set to earn $1.1 million. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] A second-round pick in that amazing 2014 WR draft class, Landry has 289 catches in three seasons. Expect the Dolphins to find a way to sign Landry to a new long-term contract so he doesn't hit the open market.
