[SEA - TE Jimmy Graham will likely be back] --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. [GB - WR Jordy Nelson still a longshot for Sunday] Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky Green Bay Packers WR [Jordy Nelson] (ribs) has a chance to play in the NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Falcons, but it is only a small chance, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Nelson has to be considered a game-time decision. If there's any way he can play, Nelson will find a way. Unless we hear positive reports out of practice, we don't think Nelson plays. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 2. [SF - 49ers 'honing in on' hiring Kyle Shanahan] Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter The San Francisco 49ers are -- and have been -- 'honing in on hiring' Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their next head coach, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] With Patriots OC Josh McDaniels taking his name out of the running, Shanahan clearly becomes the guy for the 49ers. He's turned Matt Ryan into an MVP candidate and the Falcons offense is one of the most high-powered units in the league. We're excited about what he could do in San Francisco, but there's a lot of work to be done before the 49ers are playoff contenders again. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 3. [JAX - 'Good chance' Jags hire Chip Kelly as OC] Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Former San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has a 'good chance' of being hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' new offensive coordinator. He went into the interview believing he was going to get an offer and he already 'has some assistant hires ready.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That would be interesting....to say the least. The Jaguars offense has the pieces to be a high-powered unit if someone figures out what's wrong with QB Blake Bortles. Doug Marrone is a bright head coach, but it seems like an odd fit with Kelly running the offense. We're all for bold decisions, and this could propel Jacksonville to the next level....or it could end in spectacularly horrible fashion. You just never know with Kelly. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 4. [DAL - Trading QB Tony Romo is 'No. 1 priority'] Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Dallas Cowboys QB [Tony Romo] is 'not going to be on (the team) in 2017,' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who states that trading the veteran quarterback is their 'No. 1 priority this offseason.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's time for Romo to move on as the Cowboys are set with Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback. Reports have indicated that Romo wants to go to the Broncos, but they don't have any interest in trading for him...at least at this time. There are plenty of teams who should be interested, but it comes down to Romo's contract (and whether or not it will be re-worked) and what the Cowboys actually want for the veteran passer. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 5. [SF - Kyle Shanahan will meet with 49ers] Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has a second interview planned with the San Francisco 49ers following the NFC Championship game, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's just a formality. We feel pretty confident that Shanahan is going to be the next head coach of the 49ers. The team has a long way to go, but Shanahan is going to bring a high-powered offense to the table. We'll see how he handles himself as a head coach after almost a decade as an offensive coordinator with four different teams in the NFL. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 6. [DEN - Denver's defensive staff expected to stay] Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala Denver Broncos defensive coaches Bill Kollar, Reggie Herring and Fred Pagac are expected to return under new head coach Vance Joseph. Those moves have not yet been finalized, however. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Herring was up for the defensive coordinator position vacated by Wade Phillips, but it was Broncos DB coach Joe Woods who won that job. The Broncos defense is in good hands with Woods, and they're capable of maintaining their incredible play with most of the staff (on that side of the ball) staying in place. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 7. [SD - Gus Bradley talking with Chargers] Source: ESPN.com - John Keim Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley will interview again for Los Angeles Chargers' vacant defensive coordinator position Tuesday, Jan. 17. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Bradley would be an interesting fit for the Chargers. It would be intriguing to see him get his hands on DE Joey Bosa. There are some around the NFL who believe Bosa could be one of the best defenders in the league, and what we saw in 2016 could just be the tip of the iceberg. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 8. [SD - Ken Whisenhunt staying with Chargers] Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will be retained by new head coach Anthony Lynn. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The offense will have continuity with Whisenhunt staying on board. That's good news for Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon. It's even better news for this offense with WR Keenan Allen set to come back healthy in 2017. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 9. [SD - RB Danny Woodhead ahead of schedule] Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken Los Angeles Chargers RB [Danny Woodhead] (knee) is six weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Great news for the Chargers here. Woodhead is one of the most versatile players in the league, and he's a dangerous weapon for defenses to contend with. Fantasy owners know what to expect from him, even as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. In PPR leagues, Woodhead has RB2 upside each week because of his role in the offense. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 10. [CAR - Carolina works out QB Aaron Murray] Source: The Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person Free-agent QB Aaron Murray (Eagles) worked out for the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, Jan. 17, according to sources. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Murray is an accurate passer on short and intermediate routes. He lacks a big arm, but Murray throws with good anticipation and is worth taking a look at as a developmental prospect. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 11. [DEN - Joe Woods officially promoted] Source: DenverBroncos.com Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Joe Woods was officially promoted to defensive coordinator, as expected, Tuesday, Jan. 17. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Woods, who has 25 years of coaching experience, has instructed defensive backs in the NFL for the last 13 seasons with Denver (2015-16), Oakland (2014), Minnesota (2006-13) and Tampa Bay (2004-05). During his NFL coaching tenure, Woods has coached five players to 10 total Pro Bowl selections. His secondaries have been part of No. 1 pass defenses on three occasions (2004, ‘15-16), and his teams have allowed fewer than three 300-yard passers per season. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 12. [PIT - WR Martavis Bryant applies for reinstatement] Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero Pittsburgh Steelers WR [Martavis Bryant] applied for reinstatement Tuesday, Jan. 17, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's just all part of the process Bryant has to go through in order to play again. Bryant will not be able to return for the playoffs, but he could return for the 2017 regular season. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 13. [PIT - TE Ladarius Green struggling to get back] Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette Pittsburgh Steelers TE [Ladarius Green] (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] If Green could be back for the AFC Championship Game that would be a boost for the high-powered Steelers offense. In his first season with the Steelers, Green was only available for six games. We don't think he's going to be ready for this game. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 14. [MIA - ILB Kiko Alonso could move to OLB] Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero Dolphins LB Kiko Alonso, the team's leading tackler in 2016, may be asked to switch from middle linebacker to outside linebacker in order to give the team more flexibility in the draft and free agency. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] That's a wise move for many reasons. It's a move that gives the team personnel flexibility, but it also could keep Alonso healthier as he won't be as heavily relied on as a run-stopper. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 15. [KC - Brad Childress staying put] Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci Kansas City Chiefs co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress is 'out of the picture' in the Buffalo Bills' search to find an offensive coordinator, according to Buffalo News' Vic Carucci. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's like Groundhogs Day for the Chiefs offense (thanks Alex Smith!). Keeping Childress only cements that notion further. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 16. [HOU - HOU wants CB A.J. Bouye back] Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop Houston Texans impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye is a player the team would like to re-sign, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Bouye worked his way up the depth chart this season, and he's arguably one of the best corners that will be on the open market in 2017. The Texans may want to keep him, but if some team throws crazy money at Bouye he could move on. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 17. [SD - RB Branden Oliver should return] Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams Los Angeles Chargers restricted free-agent RB [Branden Oliver] (Achilles') has a good chance to return to the team. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Chargers could place a low-round tender on Oliver, and they'd likely be able to keep him at that price. When healthy, Oliver could work as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. With Danny Woodhead set to be a free agent, the Chargers need a backup plan. [Back to Top] --------------------------------------------------------------- 18. [SEA - TE Jimmy Graham will likely be back] Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia Seattle Seahawks TE [Jimmy Graham] is likely to return to the Seahawks next year, and head coach Pete Carroll raved about his play in 2016. 'I thought Jimmy had a terrific year,' Carroll said. 'He was explosive. He was dynamic. He blocked like he's never blocked before. He became a factor on the perimeter blocking stuff, and he's a highlight film. He's got so many big plays that he made during the year.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's remarkable to think what Graham did this year considering he was coming off a torn patellar tendon. He's got a cap number of $10 million with a $2 million roster bonus due this spring. It's likely the Seahawks work to extend Graham to lower that number.
