[SF - WR Trent Taylor carving out role](#15) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 1. [PHI - QB Nick Foles will be fine](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles QB [Nick Foles]( (shoulder) is not expected to miss much time after tests on his injured shoulder showed a minor injury, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This is good news for the Eagles, who hopefully won't have to feel pressured to play Carson Wentz if they feel he would benefit from sitting Week 1 now. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [NE - RB Rex Burkhead has slight tear in knee]() Source: The Athletic - Jeff Howe New England Patriots RB [Rex Burkhead]( (knee) is reportedly dealing with a slight tear in his knee, but it has been deemed a minor injury and something he will be able to play through, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Any sprain is technically a tear, so it isn't as bad as it sounds if this is a low grade MCL tear. If it's cartilage then it could be a situation that has to be managed all year. Either way, with his performance last night and the state of the backfield, James White's value is going up. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [CLE - WR Dez Bryant talks end without a deal]( Source: The Associated Press - Tom Withers Updating a previous report, free-agent WR [Dez Bryant]( (Cowboys) and the Cleveland Browns were unable to reach a contract agreement after two days of face-to-face negotiations concluded Friday, Aug. 17. However, 'conversations continue' between the two sides, according to a source speaking on the condition of anonymity. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Bryant could still sign, but if the Browns were seriously concerned about Josh Gordon, they would have moved quicker and probably not let Bryant leave without a contract. At this point, it is possible that Bryant starts the season a free agent. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [WAS - RB Samaje Perine's injury not considered serious]() Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB [Samaje Perine]( (ankle) is expected to be fine after spraining his ankle in a preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16. 'Samaje went in and got checked for (a) twisted ankle, but looks like it's OK. Everything else was negative. Twisted ankle for Samaje,' head coach Jay Gruden said, via the team's post-game transcript. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Perine is still expected to miss at least a week according to Mike Garafolo from NFL Network, so he won't have a chance to overtake Rob Kelley in the backfield. Look for Kelley to lead the team in carries Week 1 at Arizona. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [SF - RB Jerick McKinnon out until Week 1]() Source: KNBR 680 - Brian Murphy San Francisco 49ers RB [Jerick McKinnon]( (calf) will be out the rest of the preseason, according to general manager John Lynch. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The 49ers could easily employ a three-headed committee in Week 1 against the tough Vikings defense with McKinnon and Matt Breida both likely coming off of layoffs. It might be a situation to avoid in Week 1 lineups. Calf strains can be tricky and subject to re-injury, so we'll be watching practice reports and McKinnon's return closely. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [GB - RB Jamaal Williams injury update]( Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB [Jamaal Williams]( (ankle) told reporters he could not definitively say whether he could have returned to the game after suffering an ankle injury versus the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Aug. 16. However, he was not concerned about the injury being a long-term issue, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll see if Williams is ready for the third preseason game, but all reports are that he is fine and this is not a significant injury. The Packers could hold him out to make sure he's as healthy as possible for the opener against the Bears. The possibility of more work for Ty Montgomery to open the season just went up. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [OAK - QB Derek Carr a quick study](=) Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Scott Bair Oakland Raiders QB [Derek Carr]( has already 'mastered' the offense, according to head coach Jon Gruden. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The bigger question is whether Amari Cooper will play like a #1 and Jordy Nelson will look better than he did last year with Brett Hundley. Carr is on the fringe of draftable quarterbacks because of the depth of the position. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 8. [NE - LaAdrian Waddle to be swing tackle]( Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss New England Patriots OT LaAdrian Waddle likely will be the swing tackle for the Patriots this season because of the season-ending injury to OT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles'). [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Waddle at one time was a pleasant surprise on the Lions roster, but the Patriots have to hope they don't need to use him heavily this year. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [NYG - RB Saquon Barkley to sit Friday]() Source: Giants.com New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley (hamstring) has been ruled out of the second preseason game Friday, Aug. 17. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We may see Barkley next week, but the best course of action for the Giants is make sure Barkley's hamstring is as healed as it can be by the time the Week 1 game against the Jaguars comes around. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [GB - Jake Kumerow has sprained SC joint]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Green Bay Packers WR Jake Kumerow (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a sprained SC joint and likely will miss some time, according to a source. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This could give a rookie an opening to take a spot that was destined for Kumerow, but it's more likely that his injury won't overshadow his very strong summer. He's a name to remember if he makes the team and injuries thin the Packers wide receiver group. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [SEA - WR Doug {NAME} running]() Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Gregg Bell Seattle Seahawks WR [Doug {NAME}]( (knee) has started running, and the team is optimistic that {NAME} will be available for Week 1, according to head coach Pete Carroll. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This certainly puts Week 1 in play, although we will be watching to see how he reacts to cutting and especially interested in his Week 1 practice participation. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [WAS - RB Byron Marshall to miss time after all]() Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB [Byron Marshall]( (leg) is expected to miss two to four weeks of time, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Previous reports suggested Marshall had received a clean bill of health after the preseason injury suffered Thursday, Aug. 16. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The injuries to Marshall, Derrius Guice and Samaje Perine increase the chances for Kapri Bibbs to make the final roster, and give UDFA Martez Carter more of a chance to show his stuff in the last two preseason games. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [NO - QB Drew Brees retiring after Super Bowl win?]( Source: TMZ.com New Orleans Saints QB [Drew Brees]( will retire after this season if the Saints win the Super Bowl, former teammate [Reggie Bush]( said in an on-camera interview released Friday, Aug. 17. If not, Bush said Brees will keep playing. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Brees might only play 2-3 more years in an optimistic projection, so going out on top this year isn't that outlandish. Tom Savage is his current backup and intriguing third-stringer Taysom Hill is probably more than a year away from being ready. If the team sees this in the range of possibilities, they haven't tipped their hand in their quarterback depth chart. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [NE - Isaiah Wynn's season could be over](=) Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles') has a torn Achilles', according to a source. The team lists it as an ankle injury, but the Achilles' would end his season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Wynn was at least going to be key depth at guard and tackle who could be clutch if the team suffered an in-game injury or long term loss on the line. Trent Brown and Marcus Cannon staying healthy is very important for the Patriots offense this year. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 15. [SF - WR Trent Taylor carving out role](=) Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman San Francisco 49ers WR [Trent Taylor]( is emerging as a 'popular target' for QB [Jimmy Garoppolo](. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Taylor is a solid slot option, although Marquise Goodwin is the #1, Pierre Garcon will play a big role, and rookies Richie James and Dante Pettis are making the case to get on the field early in their careers. Taylor will help Garoppolo's value, but not create standalone value of his own. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks.
