We thought some monarch populations were starting to recover last year. But we have some alarming numbers: The presence of Eastern monarch butterflies in their overwintering grounds DROPPED 22% just last year! This didn’t have to happen. You see, a key factor in their decline is toxic pesticides like Bayer-Monsanto's Roundup. We must stand up to Bayer-Monsanto and help protect monarchs and our planet before it's too late! A generous group of donors has offered to match every gift dollar for dollar up to our $850,000 goal – but only until midnight on December 31st. [Make your $27 tax-deductible contribution now for double the impact for monarchs and our planet.]( Monarch butterflies travel 3,000 miles every year. Along the way, they pollinate vegetation and support healthy ecosystems. It’s one of the animal kingdom’s most spectacular migration journeys – and now, it’s at risk of disappearing forever. Do you remember the classic children’s picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Unlike the fictional character in that story, monarch caterpillars don’t feed on cheese or apples. Their only food source is a plant called milkweed – and it’s being DECIMATED by glyphosate, the active ingredient in Bayer-Monsanto’s Roundup. Without milkweed, it is nearly impossible for monarch young to hatch and survive. It’s a simple formula, more pesticides = less milkweed = fewer monarchs. Bayer-Monsanto could stop producing its toxic pesticides. But instead, it’s mercilessly putting its profits over pollinators, people, and the planet. Friends of the Earth is putting everything we can into protecting our ecosystems from toxic pesticides and protecting our planet, but we need your support to make an impact. Don't let monarchs be driven to extinction: Donate $27 today to fight for their future and the future of the planet while you can make double the difference. If you've saved payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Donate $27 immediately]( [Donate $50 immediately]( [Donate $100 immediately]( [Donate another amount]( The monarch butterfly's incredible migration can span thousands of miles over five generations. Yet each generation knows its destination thanks to an internal "compass" the monarchs follow. But pesticide companies like Bayer-Monsanto seem to lack a moral compass – continuing to sell toxic pesticides likeRoundup no matter the cost to our planet and these incredible creatures. The use of Bayer-Monsanto's Roundup increased by over 2,600% from 1987 to 2016. This toxic weedkiller has virtually wiped out milkweed – the only food source for young monarchs. Young monarchs are also hatching on toxic pesticide-riddled milkweed – their first meal may be their last. A recent study highlighted a frightening fact: every single sample of milkweed collected was contaminated with pesticides. One-third of the milkweed samples were contaminated with pesticide levels deadly to monarchs. The dangers don't end there, Friend. Glyphosate is a probable carcinogen. And it’s associated with reproductive harm in people, along with disruption of the gut microbiome, kidney toxicity, and fatty liver disease. Farmers and homeowners are suing Bayer-Monsanto due to high rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma linked to the Roundup they've used on their farms and lawns. Roundup is causing extensive harm that must be stopped before it's too late. Help us stand up to Bayer-Monsanto and protect our planet by making your tax-deductible $27 gift today, which will have a $54 impact. If you've saved payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Donate $27 immediately]( [Donate $50 immediately]( [Donate $100 immediately]( [Donate another amount]( The stakes are too high to wait a minute more to take action. Young monarchs are hatching on pesticide-riddled milkweed, eating these plants, and dying. Meanwhile, monarch mothers are running out of places to lay their eggs in the first place. Monarch populations are in freefall – the time to act is now, while there are still monarchs left to save. At Friends of the Earth, we’re fighting on every front to save these pollinators. We are pushing Bayer-Monsanto to stop producing Roundup, pressuring garden retailers to stop selling products like Roundup in their stores and encouraging supermarkets to increase their offerings of glyphosate-free produce, like organic food. Friend, we need you by our side as we ramp up our efforts to save monarchs from extinction and protect our planet. Future generations may never experience the beauty of seeing a monarch on a sunny day. Someday soon, we may only get the rarest glimpses of these beautiful butterflies. Willl you help us fight to protect them and our planet from Big Polluters with your tax-deductible membership gift of $27 or more and make twice the impact by December 31st? Don’t miss your chance to help us fight back against corporate greed and the toxic pesticides driving monarchs toward extinction with a year-end tax-deductible gift. Rush your $27 donation today and it will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $850,000 – but only until midnight on December 31st.
