Conflicts of interest abound. Some are serious. Some aren't. One less serious, yet always present conflict of interest is the smorgasbord restaurant; aka the "all you can eat" and "buffet" restaurants. This restaurant model's main attraction is the unlimited food for a flat price. I loved these places as a teenager. I usually got my money's worth. The bane of the smorg owner are the guests who linger, especially when there's a line at the door. The faster the restaurant can herd guests back out onto the street, the better. It's known as "greet 'em, feed 'em and street 'em". I read about a possible solution recently on Quora. The solution is for smorg owners to charge by the minute. Guests still get to eat all they want. Instead of one flat price they pay per minute. They get their fill but also have an incentive to leave when done. If priced right, it could work. The price per minute must give the perception it's a better deal than one flat price yet still be profitable. I have no idea what price that would be. It sure wouldn't be a pretty scene in the place, that's for sure. You'd probably need to employ Heimlich maneuver experts since there wouldn't be much chewing happening. You could run some fun promos such as: - Big fork Fridays - Bring your own shovel Sundays - Platter plate Wednesdays Would it work? Maybe. Maybe not. The point is it's an attempt at solving a problem with a creative solution. Creative problem solving applies to our line of work. Being creative is a good thing I'm not proposing that you become a disruptor. Instead, strive to be a tad different with how you go about things. Play around. Experiment. Track what works and what doesn't work. Come up with your own flavor. By all means get ideas from others but use them as a foundation to do it differently. There are little things I do differently; they're imperceptible to the casual visitor but those small differences are there and do make a difference. And no, I'm not going to tell you what those small differences are but I'll here are some ideas and approaches to consider: - The obvious: cover topics better and/or differently. Unique, good content always works. People notice. This almost always works. - Come up with novel topics and/or titles. - Leverage your existing content in unique ways. For example, come up with roundups that present your content in interesting ways. - Ask yourself what sites in your niche and in general you like and why? Why do they stand out to you? My hunch is they're doing something a bit different that you like. - Also ask yourself "what makes my site different?" If you can't answer it, figure out something so that you can. Again, the difference(s) doesn't need to be significant. - Publish the site you would want to visit. Check out successful sites, identify aspects you don't like then do it the way you would like. This is a great way to come up with ideas. Too often we look to successful sites for how to do things. Instead, look at them for ideas how to improve them. Speaking of big, successful sites.
