How divergent thinking can lead you to breakthrough. [Evernote]( A YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHING [How making connections unlocks your creativity]( Ideas can be born from the most unexpected places. As Steve Jobs once said, “Creativity is just connecting things.” Oftentimes you may feel stuck, when actually you’re close to a breakthrough and all you need is a little nudge to finalize the idea. Divergent and convergent thinking are complementary modes of thought that can help you come up with new ideas and make better connections between them. Divergent thinking encourages spontaneous, free-flowing thought that entertains multiple solutions to a problem. It can take time to train your brain to think this way, but one way to develop the skill is with synectics. These thought exercises train you to find connections between concepts, objects, or ideas that seem unrelated. You choose any two things, like a lamp and box of tissue, and write down as many associations as you can think of. For example, you could find both items in an office, and you could make a lamp shade with tissues. Repeat this exercise everyday with new items. For more on how to make connections and unleash your own creativity, see the tips in our latest blog post. [Reserve my spot]( Tip of the Month One more way Evernote can simplify your life. Cut down on the clutter by merging notes Why it's great: Have so many notes it’s hard to keep track of everything? Try merging multiple notes into one. It’s perfect for consolidating or grouping ideas, so you can find the information you need in an instant. How it works: On your desktop, use Ctrl+click (Windows) or Cmd+click (Mac) to choose multiple notes, then select ‘Merge Notes’ in the window that appears. The selected notes will be combined into a single note and the originals moved to the 'Trash' notebook (you can keep them there or restore them later).
