A contemporary Swiss watch brand with English roots.
Seven fine watches from
Arnold & Son
Now available exclusively at Ethos Watch Boutiques
Arnold & Son belongs to an exceptional group of watchmaking companies in Switzerland entitled to call themselves a âmanufactureââa French term reserved exclusively for watch manufacturers who develop and produce their own movements in-house. Till date, the company (through Arnold & Sonâs sister concern La Joux-Perret) has conceived, designed, developed, machined, decorated, assembled, and adjusted about 20 calibres. These calibres collectively offer a complete range of sophisticated complications such as true seconds, dual time-zones, moon phase displays, while delivering an impressive autonomy. The brand has also carved a niche for itself with its instantly recognisable three-dimensional architecture, along with other exceptional aesthetic features including the cantilever balance-cocks that hark back to the late 18th century, the George V-style bridges, multiaxial symmetry, and artfully crafted guilloche dials.
Arnold & Son's horological masterpieces are now available in India exclusively at Ethos Watch Boutiques, and we have curated some of the Swiss manufactureâs finest offerings. Check out our list of seven exemplary watches from the brandâs most illustrious collections that blend Swiss craftsmanship with spectacular aesthetics executed in a sophisticated manner.
The Globetrotter
Globetrotter Day
This visually-arresting world-time creation sports an hour hand that can be independently set and a large 3D Earth that gives a view of the Northern Hemisphere as seen from directly above the North Pole. The Earth rotates once every 24 hours to provide a world time function against a concentric 24-hour ring. Housed in a 45mm mirror-polished stainless steel case, this timepiece is equipped with sharply faceted yet smoothly curved lugs. The caseback, with its sapphire crystal window providing a view of the movement, is held by six screws. A very thin, sloping bezel frames the expansive dial, covered by a highly domed sapphire crystal glass that accounts for the watchâs relatively thick profile of 17.23mm. The domed crystal, as you might surmise, is necessitated by the similarly domed, photorealistic Earth disc in the dialâs middle, which is suspended on its axis by a large, central arched bridge, forked on its ends, which spans the centre of the dial.
The outer perimeter of the dial consists of a brushed-finish chapter ring with black, printed minutesâArabic numerals at the five-minute intervals and dots for the interim minute markers, with the notable exceptions of 15 and 45, which are occupied by visible screws that hold fast either end of the central bridge. Inside this outer ring is an opaline disk with black Roman numerals. Directly under the globe is a sapphire crystal disc numbered one to 24, for the world time display. The arrow-shaped hour and minute hands constructed in blued steel, are filled with red lacquer for contrast against both the white dial and large blue areas of the world-time globe. The hour hand is a bit broader and shorter and just brushes the lower half of the Roman hour numerals, while the minute hand is thinner, longer and touches the edge of the minute track. A spectacular timepiece designed to take frequent international travellers by delight, this timepiece is powered by the in-house calibre A&S6022, oscillating at a frequency of 28,800vph and promising a power reserve of 45 hours. The ocean blue of the world-time disk harmonises perfectly with the shiny, maritime-blue calfskin leather strap.
Globetrotter Night (featured as the first image)
Another version of this spectacular version comes with the 3D globe presented as seen at night. The raised parts have undergone a deep-grey galvanic treatment before being hand-lacquered in a black-grey hue, while the oceans are lacquered in grey-blue. Finally, the city lights twinkling in the northern hemisphere are represented by hand- applied silver sparkles. The strap is also upgraded to an alligator leather strap.

Nebula Rose Gold
Crafted in an 18-karat rose gold case with a diameter of 41.5mm, the Arnold & Son Nebula is an extremely wearable dress watch, thanks to its thin case and classical proportions. The symmetry of the movement architecture is a visual treat to horological enthusiasts. The skeletonised dial flaunts the intricately decorated movement, formed by ten bridges fixed on the perimeter, seven of which are triangular with chamfered edgesâa contemporary retelling of traditional English movement architecture. The dial also shows off the double mainspring barrel at the top and a subsidiary seconds dial adjacent to the balance wheel and escapement below. It got its name âNebulaâ (which literally means: an astronomical term for a cloud of cosmic gas and dust formed by the debris of exploding stars) due to the sculptural movement powering this timepiece, evocative of an inverted star that has exploded in an orderly manner, that is, with all the bridges converging from the outside of the dial resembling perfectly symmetrical rays. The open-worked dial in fact embodies a perfect union of aesthetic flair and technical prowess.
The manual-winding A&S5101 calibre operates at a frequency of 21,600vph promising an impressive power reserve of 90 hours. The most distinctive feature of the timepiece are the seven classical-style bridges that are mounted radially around the movement, holding most of the components together. The decently-sized hands and a minute/hour track along the chapter ring facilitates easy legibility. Flipping the watch over gives you a view of the contrasting finishes and colours along with a variety of detailing on the movement. This timepiece, worn on a brown alligator leather strap, is often touted as one of the most graphically striking creations of the watchmaker.

DBG Skeleton Dual-Time
Two movements in a single watch, which allows for two time zones to operate accurately down to the minuteâperfect for India's half-hour time difference
Symmetry in the design and construction of its displays and movements has always been a huge part of Arnold & Sonâs DNA. With the DBG Skeleton Dual-Time, Arnold & Son has pushed the idea even further, creating a watch with two entirely separate time displays, driven by an incredible twin-movement. It not only displays two independent time-zones, but does so by the means of two independent movements, united in one calibre. Each dial, displaying the hours and minutesâone with full hands and Arabic numerals, the other with open hands and Roman numerals, in order to differentiate themâis actually driven by its own barrel and gear train with its own escapement and balanceâand the whole mechanism is visible thanks to its open-worked execution. It not only allows you to independently adjust each time zone to the desired hour and minute but also implies that each time zone is self-regulated, thanks to independent regulating organs.
Often referred to as a âcaptainâs watchâ, this type of watch usually has a separate barrel/gear train and balance/escapement, enabling it to house different complications without one affecting the accuracy of the other. The symmetrical architecture can be appreciated through the sapphire crystal caseback. Limited to 30 pieces, this timepiece is powered by the in-house A&S1309 calibre, beating at a frequency of 21,600vph and offering a power reserve of 40 hours. The beautifully finished movement, housed within a 44mm rose gold case, flaunts thin Geneva stripes, chamfered bridges with polished edges, fine circular graining, satin-finished wheels with a three-spoke design and thermally blued screws. The open-worked dial displays the fine execution in full glory, with the depths, reflections and contrasts taking watch aficionados by delight. The brown alligator leather strap completes the look.

Perpetual Moon Rose Gold
Moon phase watches are among the most classical complications used in horology, and for decades. In the Arnold & Son HM Perpetual Moon, the moon takes centre stage, with an oversized moon phase display and a photorealistic, three-dimensional sculptured moon. Itâs located on the upper half of the dial is in a window that measures an immense 29mm in diameterâone of the largest moon phase displays you can find in a wristwatch. This moon was first hand-engraved to look as realistic as possible and then duplicated with a stamping process for the commercial watches. This moon, large and visually striking, is then inserted in a guilloche disc, with a printed constellation.
Not only is the moon display impressive in terms of visual execution, but also promises extreme accuracy, with only one dayâs deviation every 122 years. This precision can be accounted for by the fact that the moon phase display is not a module added to the movement but it fully integrated into the calibre, right from its conception. The 5.34mm thick A&S1512 calibre features Geneva stripes, thermally blued screws, manually bevelled and polished angles, and fine circular graining. The cream-coloured dial complements the traditionally-designed 42mm rose-gold case with a thin cambered bezel and strong lugs, with double-step design.

Time Pyramid Tourbillon
Inspired by the regulators created by English watchmaker John Arnold and his son Roger, over 200 years ago, and by antique British skeleton clocks, the Time Pyramid Tourbillon is powered by the skeletonised calibre A&S8615, whose pyramid-shaped tourbillon appears to float between two pieces of sapphire crystal. The movement is built on three levels. The two power reserve indicators are positioned at three and nine oâclock and the tourbillon is superimposed by a sapphire crystal disk and a rhodium-plated ring that indicates the hours and the minutes. Manually wound by a crown positioned at six oâclock, its gear train runs in a linear arrangement connecting the two barrels at six oâclock to the tourbillon escapement at 12 oâclock, and its bridges are designed in a manner that the balance wheel, the mainspring barrel, and the other wheels are all visible from the dial side. The movement is not only complex from a technical standpoint but decorated with haute horlogerie aesthetic flourishes, including chamfering on the bridges and three-spoke wheels, Côtes de Genève on the satin-polished mainplate, mirror polishing on the tourbillon bridges and cage, and bluing on the screws.
The watchâs impressive 90-hour power reserve is indicated by dual indicators using blued steel hands, positioned on either side of the linear gear train, while the rotating tourbillon allows you to read the running seconds. Limited to 28 pieces, the Time Pyramid Tourbillon comes in a round case of diameter 44.6mm, in 18-karat rose gold. Offering everything that sets a skeleton watch apart, including an intricate movement, a prestige complication, and an unmatched view of the engineering without compromising legibility, the timepiece is mounted on a brown hand-stitched alligator leather strap.

Tourbillon Chronometer No 36
Introduced as a 240th anniversary Tribute Edition, this Tourbillon Chronometer No 36 in stainless steel flaunts a skeletonised and mirror-polished top bridge with the one-minute tourbillon featuring the traditional Arnold & Son three-spoke design. Inspired by the John Arnold pocket chronometer No 1/36 with a tourbillon prominently positioned on the dial side to take the centre stage, this timepiece comes with a fully skeletonised dial featuring mirror-polished hands, with a prominent element being the small seconds indicator between seven and eight o'clock that adds to the symmetric design and exquisite layout of the dial.
This COSC-certified chronometer, through the dial side, offers a view of the main plate of the movement with its satin-brushed bridges with chamfered and polished edges. The main plate and bridges have a black DLC (diamond-like carbon) treatment, making this one of the most elegant and impressive timepieces when it comes to movement architecture. The 46mm stainless steel case is fitted with a cambered sapphire crystal glass with antireflective coating on both sides, and mounted on a black alligator leather strap. At the heart of the watch is the fully designed and developed in-house manual-winding calibre A&S8600. Beating at a frequency of 28,800vph, this exquisitely finished chronometer movement, with its double barrel, provides a power reserve of 90 hours when fully wound.

The Arnold & Son story
Named after John Arnold, an English watchmaker of the 18th century, renowned for his ingenuity and work on marine chronometers, Arnold & Son took off from the passion that the young watchmaker had in the early 1700s. The brand traces its origins back to 1764 England, but was reborn as a Swiss brand almost two centuries after that, in 1995
Born in Cornwall, Arnold learnt from his watchmaker father before training in the Netherlands. He began working with watches in 1762 and soon climbed up the ladder of popularity amongst the upper echelons of the British society with a ring containing the smallest half-quarter repeater ever made, which he presented to King George III, from the House of Hanover. Today, he is remembered as one of the most innovative watchmakers of his times, who held patents for a detent escapement, a bimetallic balance, and a helical balance spring. He also had an instrumental role to play in some of the most significant events of his times, such as the competition to determine longitude at sea, for which was felicitated with several grants and awards by the British Board of Longitude.
John Arnold took the horological world by storm in the world of precision timekeeping with the Arnold No 36. Reviewed by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the watch passed all the tests. In over a year and a half, the variation in rate was just two and a half minutes, which is an average of 0.5 seconds per day. The requirements for todayâs COSC chronometer certificate are between -4 and +6 seconds per day. So Arnoldâs watch was 10 times more precise than the chronometers of today and a thousand times more precise than the pocket watches of the time. Not only was this a huge technological breakthrough at the time, John Arnold even explained what he had done and offered his watch at an affordable price. Taken by delight with the confirmation from the Royal Observatory, Arnold wrote a letter explaining his product and how pleased he was, referring to the watch as a âveritable chronometerâ. Thus, this was the first pocket watch to be called a chronometer, which till date, continues to be used as the term to denote an exceptionally accurate and incredibly precise timepiece. John Arnold even became a good friend of Abraham-Louis Breguetâthe renowned inventor of the tourbillonâwho fitted his very first tourbillon regulator into an Arnold pocket watch. Arnold was joined by his son, John Roger Arnold in 1796, and Arnold & Son soon became the leading supplier of timepieces to the Royal Navy. The timepieces have also been known to accompany famous explorers on their voyages of discovery.
In 1995, private investors with a passion for complex mechanics bought the rights to the Arnold & Son name (among those of other watchmakers). Arnold & Son became a fully integrated Swiss manufacture, developing and producing in-house all of its movements, perpetuating the legacy of John Arnold through mechanical features such as the true beat second or design elements. In 2012 though, Japanâs Citizen Watch acquired Arnold & Son at the same time as movement specialist La Joux-Perret. (Citizen would later acquire Frederique Constant and Alpina as well.) Today, while the brand is owned by a Japanese company, its management and operations are entirely Swiss. From its Manufacture based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which is the cradle of the Swiss watchmaking industry, Arnold & Son develops its timepieces in-house including its complicated calibres. Known for exploring new-age ways to redefine traditional horological craftsmanship, and displaying an haute horlogerie approach to watchmaking, the house of Arnold & Son has several distinctive collections to its credit.
