September 29, 2021 [3 new things in social media: Twitter, Instagram, and governments try to regulate content; How JibJab listened to customers and reinvigorated its brand](/ODY3LVNMRy05MDEAAAF_0KLpR-tvgeVXkDwElSjoQnBc3g-3z8jvS0H8b3KgE-TrakEPg6r9k-Ri7dCI6wEdjXRG0V4=) Take a look at some of Insider Intelligence's latest social media stories. 1. Twitter's new product road map emphasizes creator-friendliness and user experience The news: Twitter has released a number of changes to its creator tools that it plans to release now and in the next few months, including allowing users to send and receive one-time payments via third-party services such as Venmo and automatically blocking accounts that use potentially harmful language or engage in repeated, uninvited contact with another user if the Safety Mode setting is turned on. What this means: The updates show how Twitter is prioritizing personalization and privacy in its creator push. [Learn more about how the moves will impact Twitter and its push to bring in more revenues.]() 2. Facebook studies show Instagram is bad for teens The news:Multiple Facebook studies concluded that Instagram adversely affects teens, per a Wall Street Journal report. Among the findings: - 32% of teenage girls indicated that when they had negative thoughts about their appearance, Instagram exacerbated those feelings. - 14% of teenage boys in the US said Instagram worsened how they felt about themselves. - 13% of teens in the UK and 6% of teens in the US who reported suicidal thoughts traced those thoughts back to Instagram usage. [Learn how TikTok sees this as an opportunity.]() 3. Texas', Brazil's new laws would make combating social media misinformation illegal The news: Earlier this month, Texas and Brazil both passed laws limiting social media companies’ ability to enforce their content moderation rules. The Texas bill prevents social platforms from censoring posts due to “political viewpoints.” That's a broad swath of content, encompassing topics like COVID-19 misinformation and Holocaust denial. It's likely the bill will be struck down in court as a violation of First Amendment rights. Meanwhile, Brazil's law would not outright ban companies from taking down posts, but in practice, the effect is the same. It will force companies to receive court orders to take down posts outside of a slim segment of pre-approved reasons, such as nudity, violence, or copyright violations.
