Dogs Trust USA is helping Los Angeles County create an education program to provide staff with dog behavior knowledge. [View an online version of this email]( Last year, more than 40,000 dogs ended up in Los Angeles shelters, surpassing 2021 and 2020. In the U.S. overall, an estimated 50% of these dogs are given to shelters because of behavior problems. This is why we at Dogs Trust USA, Inc. are proud to announce a partnership with one of the country's largest animal control agencies, [Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control]( (DACC), to implement our Training and Behavior program at its shelters for staff and volunteers. "Many dogs that come through our doors either haven’t had a loving home in which to learn proper training, or are anxious in an animal care center setting,” said LA County Director Marcia Mayeda. “We’re so grateful to Dogs Trust USA for this partnership, which will help our staff master the skills needed to prepare dogs with behavioral foundations fit for forever homes." Our Training & Behavior Project Manager, Gemma Smith, led workshops at three of LA County's shelters (Castaic, Downey, and Palmdale) dedicated to reading body language and understanding how dogs learn; two critical subjects when working with shelter pups. She also delivered presentation skills and coaching conversations for shelter mentors to help them with their own delivery to staff and volunteers. Our programs are made possible thanks to the shared vision and support of supporters like the [PEDIGREE Foundation]( who joined us at the training. “We continue to hear from shelters that behavior for many dogs remains a challenge for adoption,” said Deb Fair, Executive Director, PEDIGREE Foundation. “That’s why programs like Dog Trust USA’s staff and volunteer behavior training programs are critical to increasing a dog’s chance for adoption into a home with a loving pet parent. It was a great day of learning for our team with Castaic’s staff and volunteers; witnessing the power of consistent language, visual cues, and other training techniques to help more dogs reach their adoption potential.” We look forward to sharing updates on our progress in Los Angeles and the surrounding communities as we partner with animal welfare leaders to bridge the gaps in dog welfare. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
