Junk fees are hidden costs not included in the advertised price of a good or service. The FTC is now seeking comments on a proposed rule to ban them. These hidden charges we don’t know about until they show up on the bill are everywhere. They show up when we rent a car, and have to pay extra to pick it up at the airport, or for highway tolls, or -- amazingly -- just to cover the basic costs of vehicle maintenance. They show up when we buy an airplane ticket, and have to pay extra for luggage, changing a flight, or simply being allowed to choose a seat next to family or friends. They show up when we buy concert tickets, book a hotel room, pay utility bills, or even rent an apartment. Now the Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comments on a rule that would ban hidden fees. The proposed rule would require that businesses state upfront what consumers will pay for what they will get. All mandatory fees would have to be disclosed in the initially quoted price.
