Friend, in their third attempt, Senate Democrats have once again met with Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough to make an official case to include temporary immigration protections in the Build Back Better Act. Though MacDonough has not outright endorsed or rejected the plan, two Senate aides described it as a “productive conversation”. Judiciary Chairman Richard J. Durbin [told]( reporters that, “She kept it very close to the vest and didn’t react as we made our initial presentation.” MacDonough, an unelected official, should not be the obstructing force that prevents millions of undocumented immigrants from finally attaining relief and protection. [Sign and send the petition to your U.S. senators: Immigration reform is human infrastructure.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( The proposal presented to the Parliamentarian includes protections for an estimated 7.1 million undocumented immigrants. The current plan grants parole to migrants who have lived in the U.S. for a decade or more. Those who receive parole will be able to live in the U.S. without fear of deportation caused by the lack of legal status. They will be able to apply for work permits, driver's licenses, and to leave and re-enter the U.S. These protections are temporary but long-term and will last for ten years. While this proposal does not include the path to citizenship immigrants have earned, it would be a huge step forward and would be the first real protection for immigrant communities that Congress has passed in almost 30 years. The immigration provisions included within the current Build Back Better plan are already a compromised version of what immigrant communities deserve. Regardless of the Parliamentarian's ruling, the Senate can and should push forward and include the existing protections for immigrant communities that were included in the House plan. This is the year we will win big for immigrant communities, but we need you to write to your Senator to ensure this is a priority that cannot be watered down or taken off the table as they negotiate the Build Back Better Act.
