Friend, on June 17, President Biden [signed a bill]( to make Juneteenth the first new federal holiday in decades! Black activists, organizers, and historians have long lobbied for Juneteenth--the day the last enslaved people were finally freed, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation--to be celebrated as our nation's true Independence Day. But the legacy of Juneteenth is not just one of celebration and freedom. Juneteenth also recognizes a legacy of the U.S. government's broken promises and dereliction of duty to Black people. Even though freedom was their birthright and their civil right, too many Black people remained in bondage long after the government “freed” them. Today we see this legacy carried out in the rarely ever punished police murder of Black people. We see it in systems of white supremacy which continue to deny Black people equal housing, equal employment, equal health care, equal education, and so much more. While we celebrate the federal government's declaration of Juneteenth as a national holiday, we must not lose sight of the ongoing work of true liberation still happening to get Black people equal access to the ballot, protection from murderous law enforcement, affordable reproductive care, freedom from over policing and mass incarceration, and fair immigration policy, among so many other examples of systemic racism that plague our communities. [This Juneteenth, help us get closer to realizing America's promises to enslaved Africans and their descendants. Chip in $1 to each of these Black-led organizations doing the critical grassroots work necessary to bring true liberation and freedom to our communities.]( Keep fighting, Irna Landrum, Daily Kos Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
