& a Course On Getting Copywriting Clients ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ Here's the story behind my "fedora picture". I was on a training call with Ian Stanley and he said something like, "Before I met you in person, I thought you were a really cool guy who wore fedoras." We both started busting up laughing. Here's the photo in question. Every time I do some sort of new interview (which I rarely do) this photo ends up being used. I laugh each time because it was taken at the Del Mar Racetrack opening day. You're supposed to wear ridiculous horse-attire outfits and hats to opening day. My friend Ross had a fedora stashed away from a halloween costume so I grabbed it. The point of me including the fedora photo originally was to point out gambling at the Del Mar racetrack on the [CopyHour sales page.]( Back then it was the only "quality" headshot type picture I had, so I started using it... not thinking about how it made me look. And here we are a decade later. I'm forced to write an email to assure you... I do not wear fedoras. There are 2 lessons you can take away from this. You pick which is best. - I've built a successful business without ever getting headshots taken. - But the better lesson is, if you don't control your image, someone else will. Not getting professional headshots has been more negative than it has been positive. It's a mistake AFTER you reach a certain level. For a couple hundred bucks, I could've had much better images to send around... and I probably would've gotten more interviews and business in the process. Being in the copywriting industry is probably the only thing that saved me from that fedora. "Copywriters" and "entrepreneurs" are often given the benefit of the doubt because we're "creatives". But I don't wear fedoras. What the hell was I thinking letting that picture spread? 🤦 - Derek Recommended course: - The short [Anyone Can Get Their First Copywriting Client]( video course (2.5hrs) shows you the 2-pronged method (Modern Engagement + Outreach) I used to get my first few clients, and how you can do it too. "Do I need a portfolio to get copywriting clients?" This course is targeted specifically at beginners. You do NOT need to have a portfolio or headshots at all to get started with this method. In fact, I think it's wise to start "engaging" with potential clients before you have anything in place. Get started meeting people now, not later. You really only need to know that you want to write copy in some capacity. Further... you might not even want to be a copywriter per se. You could ultimately want to be a marketing consultant or want to run a small one or two person marketing agency (and copywriting will be involved somehow). The point: just get started NOW and Anybody Can Get Their First Copywriting Client can help with that. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
