Shocking! - When you're starting a business, it's not about you, it's about them. - Figuring out what the customer wants to buy can be a crap shoot. You might bounce all around until you figure out your exact niche or topic or product -- see James Clear. - Start a business (start a list) in a market in which people buy things. - Put together a "client attractor" to get people who likely buy things onto your list. There are 3 we discussed: 1) Quizzes 2) tips & tricks newsletter (with potentially some "Lead bait" to get them onto that newsletter or 3) a "challenge". The next thing we need to discuss is traffic sources that get people to your client attractor. Listen, there are dozens of ways to build a list and drive traffic. Free & paid. Fast & slow. None are right or wrong if you're following the numbers. We'll keep it to 3 types of "client attractors" and just a few traffic sources for simplicity sake (and because these are what I have the most experience with). Now, the #1 reason lead generation efforts fail is attachment. The only way you can fail when starting up a small business is if you're attached. Remember that when you're building a list, you're starting a business. You fail when you get attached to a business model or an audience or a product. You even fail when you get attached to a service you'll be providing! You fail when you get attached to who you think you are in relation to the niche market. It causes anxiety, fear and suffering because you're trying to force something you're not in control of (what people want). Attachment made me sell my business. I was focused on me and how I fit in and the customer was getting lost in my confusion. But then I let go of the attachment to who I was... and suddenly the opportunity to buy my business back was presented so I took it. So don't get attached to a way to generate leads while at the same time starting to generate them. Don't get attached to a traffic source as "the one" while also trying to find your best traffic source. Business is mostly giving the right people the right product they want at the right time and this has nothing to do with you and your preferences. Pick a traffic source but don't get attached Again, we don't know what we'll sell.. but we do want to talk to people who buy things (first and foremost). Many, many, many different traffic sources have buyers on them. Your first traffic source will not be your last. Your first traffic source might not pan out. You HAVE to complete the work I'll give you in the next step to identify what people are buying and what they want to buy as soon as possible. If you wait too long to survey, poke and prod your list, you could be building a list from a bad traffic source with zero buyers of your eventual thing. Here in our process it finally comes back to you. What's your: - Budget (free or paid) - Timeline (fast or long game) - Existing resources (knowledge and connections) The above is obviously going to dictate quite a bit about your traffic source. Here are the traffic sources to consider based on the 3 client attractors I've outlined. Quiz / Free traffic sources: - Requires building an audience over the long haul. - Twitter. - Instagram. - LinkedIn. - YouTube - SEM/content/blogs. Quiz / Paid traffic sources: - Requires a resource: learning how to run a little bit of traffic or hiring someone. - I've used Facebook ads. - Native networks like Outbrain or Taboola (we've seen examples from Smart Asset in CopyHour). - Google ads. - YouTube ads. Newsletter / Free traffic sources: - Affiliate / JV partner. Requires a resource: connections. - Twitter. - Instagram. - LinkedIn. - YouTube - SEM/content/blogs. Newsletter / Paid traffic sources: - Requires a resource: knowledge because you probably need to create "lead bait". - Facebook ads. - Twitter ads. - Google ads. Challenge / Free traffic sources: - Requires a resource: connections. - Posting in a forum. - Requires building an audience over the long haul. - Twitter. - Instagram. - LinkedIn. - YouTube - SEM/content/blogs. Challenge / Paid traffic sources: - Instagram ads. - Facebook ads. - Google ads. The main takeaway here is this: After you've decided on the market and niched into areas where people are buying things... then you pick one of the client attractors above that makes sense for that audience. Then... you need to use your brain to figure out what the first traffic source is that you'll test. You want traffic with people who buy things to be seeing your client attractor and opting in. Where do these buyers of things in your market typically hang out? Where would they see your ad or interact with you/your content? You might not nail the first traffic source, but it's important to pick it and stick to it for your initial tests.
