And I touched on how clear and freeing it is to know how to allocate my time... ...but maybe you noticed an ulterior motive. What that email really was angling towards is something deeper that I'm experimenting with in my copywriting. I shall explain: The surface issue I had when I was starting as a copywriter/marketing consultant back in the day was "getting clients". The core issue underneath is that I was straight-up afraid (right or wrong) to do lead generation and put myself out there. But there's another hidden layer. I was telling myself a different story than the real core issue mentioned. In other words, the core issue was obscured by some other invented issue. There might be any number of these invented issues that you or your prospect struggles with. In the case of yesterday's email, I was saying that I *thought* that uncertainty about how to spend my work hours was the real problem. I'd subscribe to apps and buy courses trying to be more productive, all the while avoiding the core issue. - Surface: Getting clients - Obfuscating Layers: Poor productivity, uncertainty of how to spend work hours - Core: Scared of lead generation Ultimately, what my email yesterday was trying to accomplish was prepping you for the "awful" truth... If you want to "get clients" and make it as a freelance copywriter, you need a lead generation process. This isn't shocking advice, clearly. It's just more that folks are afraid of the lead gen process and have a hard time admitting it to themselves. I know I did. The product I'm putting together (and soft launching tomorrow) is going to help solve this issue in a very simple way with a two-pronged approach based on my experience. Now, the number 1 place to drum up business is through referrals. But that requires a client. The freelancer chicken & the egg situation: How do you get a client in the first place? Well, there are only 2 reasonable ways for new copywriters to do lead gen these days. That's part of the reason I'm going to call this training (I think -- it's not settled yet)... The Double Happiness Method. Why Double Happiness? It's a 2-pronged approach that, in retrospect, I've used over the years to the both 1) get hired and 2) hire other copywriters, consultants and service providers. The real reason for calling it Double Happiness is that when I was deep in the client game I lived near an amazing Chinese restaurant in Del Mar, CA called Double Happiness. I always thought the name was great and it was a local favorite, yet... Double Happiness went out of business during the pandemic precisely because they did NOT do any lead gen and did NOT adjust to modern times and how business is done (no delivery apps). The Double Happiness Method involves: 1. Engagement 2. Modern Outreach Both of these prongs are multi-layered but simple in practice (and not scary to implement). Again, I've used these 2 methods consciously and unconsciously for years to get clients, customers, to network and make millions in sales. I've also hired several copywriters that used these methods to approach me (paying $10K+ to certain writers). And all the biggest copywriters I've made friends with or studied have used this method too.
