I've done a fair amount of drugs in my lifetime... I've climbed mountains... Pushed my body to its limit and taken a lot of risks. The joy of those experiences (either during or after) pales in comparison to the utter joy I feel simply being present with my children. The other night I was laying bed, reading a story with my son. We started chatting and he was asking me endless questions about life -- most of them impossible to answer. Then he started getting silly and making up words and stories. I honestly almost cry thinking about it (that's how big of a wimp I am when it comes to my kids). Somehow this random 20 minutes in the middle of May 2023 was one of the greatest moments of my entire life. I sometimes feel a little sad for many in my generation who choose not to have children. What they see is what happened the next morning: I was up at 5:30am with screaming children, chaos and destruction. You can completely lose your shit before 7am sometimes. With the good comes the "bad". Where we all go wrong with parenting is when we try to make it something it's not. When we try to remove the chaos and keep the cuteness. But this is life with children. And so it goes with anything... with writing... and with entrepreneurship. It's not all skittles and beer. If you want the joys of finishing a writing project or being a freelancer or being a business owner... you've got to accept that there will be difficult moments. And those moments are good! They test you. Are you really happy? Is this really what you want? Have you really mastered your mind and your skillset? I've found it much easier to just respect the hard moments and to study any negative thoughts or emotions that bubble up. "Oh, this is what frustration feels like in my chest. That's weird. Why does it feel like this?" When I start analyzing the negative moments, I see them for what they are -- conditioned thought patterns or a biological response -- and they quickly dissipate. Long story short: the bad is just a part of the good. And don't do (a lot of) drugs. Have kids. Start a business. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
