On the freeway near my house, an armored Brinks truck had its back door pop open and cash just spilled out everywhere on the road. It quite understandably caused a scene. Four lanes of traffic came to a standstill with folks on their morning commute deciding to abandon their cars & fill up their pockets with $1's and $20's. I personally won't get out of my car on the freeway for anything under a $100 bill. Some people were even posting themselves collecting cash on Instagram & Tik Tok (which is a very dumb thing to do if you think about it for 1 second). Instead of rushing to collect the money, the Brinks driver just whipped out a phone and recorded these commuters turned opportunity pirates. Ultimately, a couple low IQ people got arrested and it was a whole big viral story. This leads me to the very stupid copywriting tip I told you about last night. It's so dumb and un-revolutionary that you might kill yourself of boredom. Or maybe not. Maybe this is newer to you which is fine too and probably better. I'll start this dumb tip here: What type of email do you think gets the most opens... AND the most amount of clicks? - Is it Black Friday sales emails? - Emails where you put the person's name in the subject line? - Viral story emails like this one? No. You're wrong. It's dumber than that. I just looked at some stats in my Active Campaign dashboard and they made me giggle. I laughed out loud in my office (door locked of course) and I'm pretty sure my wife heard it but she knows better than to ask me what's going on. There's an email that's getting 80% opens - which is LOW in the case of this type of email. And I'm very confused by the 20%. It also gets a 50% click through rate which is astronomical in comparison to other types of emails but that's also confusingly low in this case too. Which should be sending me red flags... but like I said this is really boring so I haven't given it attention. In the scheme of email copywriting I don't worry too much about either of these stats btw. I prefer to look at end revenue. If open rates or clicks fall super low then I'll take a look. Also for testing purposes, looking at open rates of subject line a vs b can be helpful. I digress. This type of email will always get the most opens. It will always get the most clicks. Yet, us dummies spend the least amount of time worrying about it. We throw it together hodge-podge and move onto other more exciting emails. And what you or your client (future or present) is doing... is leaving money on the freeway. They're letting big ole bags of cash fall out the back of their armored truck. Leaking cash everywhere. It's gross actually. Clean it up. I will not take this metaphor further because I was thinking about the people scooping the cash up as "the competition" but that's a bit of a stretch. The real point is this, again: These emails will ALWAYS get your highest opens and clicks. Hands down and I'll fight you if you disagree. These emails are consistently undervalued (attention-wise) like sad little rescue puppies. And here's why this is so dumb. These emails are, of course, Welcome emails. Don't click away! I know, I know. You can take a nap in a minute. Welcome emails are the first email you send to someone who joins the list. It doesn't even matter if you don't send a traditional welcome email (advanced strategy)... those first few emails should be your most impactful. The best of the best. They should link to your highest converting offers or the ones that give you the best ROI or AOV (or whatever metric is most important to you or your client). The opportunity here is what I'm describing in this very email you're reading right now. People don't think about welcome emails hard enough. Businesses (like myself) don't spend enough time on those first few emails. Perfecting... testing... and well, profiting. Instead we let bags of cash spill out on the freeway and the commuter zombie pirates go mindlessly chasing after it somewhere else. More eyeballs on offers generally leads to more sales. Welcome emails produce the most amount of eyeballs you'll get at once. Read the last 2 sentences again. No other email you send will get as many eyeballs on it. It's dumb but powerful when you truly see this. This email probably got some eyeballs. It has yours right now. I have your eyeballs. Don't freak out. An armored truck spilling cash on the freeway is a juicy story. But this will get nowhere near as many eyeballs as my welcome email does. Now... with your waning attention I'd like to direct you towards something useful and obviously related to the above.
