Hey {NAME} -- Last week I sent several emails about phone/media addiction. Long story short: we all got it bad. A lot of marketers and copywriters are making it worse -- their reader's addiction, I mean -- so let me try to be of use. Here are some ideas I've been thinking through. These are just a jumping off point, not established theories or even rules of thumb (yet). Phone guidelines: How to setup your phone to be less addictive One reader named Chris sent me this list below and I like it: - Delete all social media apps and games. You can still use them on your browser, just not on your phone. - Delete the News app and any other apps you check compulsively, like stocks. - Delete your email app. - Delete your web browser. I'm on this setup now and let me tell you, my weekend was bliss. I pulled the phone out to snap photos of my son playing baseball for the first time, to do some Spanish on Duolingo, and respond to the odd text message. That was about it. I felt light and unattached and so much more in synch with my family. No email app on my phone has been the biggest difference. When I went to check my email on desktop, I was shocked to find... basically nothing I needed to respond to or look at. Derek, 1. Phone, 0. Media consumption guidelines: How to consume less and produce more. - For every piece of media you consume - you should try to produce more output. Create as much as possible. Consume as little as is needed. - Read a thousand word article? Write at least as many words. - Read an email? Write a promotional email (for yourself or a client or just for practice). - The only media that's different would be a book/course or movie/podcast. Articles/blogs/emails are often written quickly. The ideas aren't as fleshed out. They typically don't teach you as much. - For a book or course your output could be maybe 15% of your input. Read for an hour? Make sure to write for 10 minutes. - With a movie or podcast, 50% output is probably good. Watch a 2 hour movie? Write for 1 hour. - I think the timing of consumption is important as well. Create in the morning. Consume in the evening. - Separate creation and consumption. Don't have consumption options available when you're trying to create. This is just a start. I have some ideas about how all of the above inter-relates with the marketers/copywriters you might follow. I'll explore this more but basically I think it's best to a) cut down on who you listen to and b) try to consume their products vs. reading their entertaining emails.
