How to Train Your Brain the Way an Athlete Trains Their Body
On Sunday, I'm relaunching our VIP program. We're giving it an overhaul designed to make it even more focused than ever before. And to punctuate that focus, we're renaming the program: welcome to [Heavy Mental - Training Your Mind The Way An Athlete Trains Their Body](.

A few years ago I got interested in people in the furthest corners of meditation who were training their minds for competitive reasons.
These people and their techniques tend to be invisible to the mainstream mindfulness world because their world views and values don't match up with what we usually think of when we hear "meditation". In particular, these mental trainers are often very competitive.
I want to bring the meditation techniques of world-class competitors to all of you. Along their other elite brain training secrets.
An example is my friend Graham Betchart. He's done one-on-one meditation sessions with the top pick in the NBA draft for each of the last four years. These are some of the most competitive people on the planet. Meditation is one of the tools used to improve their skills in specific ways. One example is what Graham calls "Next Play Speed."
If you watch a basketball player, there's often a set of behaviors that happen between them being locked in on offense and them being locked in on defense. This could be complaining to the refs, moping to themselves, or just taking the first few steps at a jog rather than a sprint.
The time of that transition is important and Graham considers it a trainable part of the mental game. That's Next Play Speed. Meditation is the best way to train the brain to do this quick re-focus.
In the NBA, a team that improves their performance by 1 point per game will win about 4 more games that season. So these tiny improvements matter.
How does Next Play Speed affect us? It turns out that we can benefit in the same way. Our days have all sorts of transitions. How quickly do we get through them? What do we let get in our way?
I ended up using a lot of Graham's work in how I teach overcoming procrastination and task switching. Next Play Speed works just as well for productivity as it does for sport.
That's just one of over a hundred useful examples from competitive mental training.
With [Heavy Mental]( focusing on the very best year-round mental training, I will include a lot of this cutting edge work.
I'll be pulling in more competitive techniques, but that doesn't mean I expect you to become ruthless, competitive people. Rather the opposite, I expect you to become mentally stronger and then to use that for good. (Bad behavior is often the result of mental weakness--so positive outcomes of mental training seems likely.)
[Heavy Mental]( is my personal group coaching experience, and I look forward to exploring these topics with you as you learn to apply them in your own life.
