It’s not an easy topic. - - - - - #1. Is it a priority that you do it yourself? The lesson I’ve learned about having a virtual assistant is that you need to make it a habit to use them. But then, if you make that investment, there are dozens of things they can do for you. When I am prioritizing, the first question I ask is whether something needs to be done at all. You may also feel that your team doesn’t take ownership over projects and that you’re the only one that cares. If they use phrases like, “I’m happy to help you with this,” it may be an indication that you’re doling out tasks, not handing over responsibility. Here’s how that plays out: A branch of psychology research divides people into two categories: minimizers, also known as “satisficers”, who search until they find an option that’s good enough to meet all their criteria, and then stop; and maximizers, who want to find the very best option available. Those in the latter group tend to be FOBO-prone. “Maximizers can end up potentially having lots of regret and a negative emotion that comes from a comparison of the things they didn’t choose,” says psychologist Ellen Peters.
