I don’t see why we have to say ‘I will die,’ because I can already see myself in you, in other people [View online]( [Coach Tony]( Coach Tony [@tonystubblebine]( I don’t see why we have to say ‘I will die,’ because I can already see myself in you, in other people, and in future generations. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh This quote fits nicely with the purpose of a Codex Vitae. The Codex idea is that you start writing a document that represents your most important wisdom, adding and editing it throughout your life, passing it on as a representation of your life. I’ve long been a champion for people to start a Codex, even if your first draft is just a few hundred words. That brings me to my own Codex and the first of three new “upgrades” for this and future newsletters. - - - - - #1. I’m writing a much bigger Codex. My old Codex is 1,700 words covering a few keystone philosophies for living well. But it barely covers the topics I cover here in the newsletter: purpose, productivity, procrastination, health, longevity. So I’d like to expand it in a major way. What I’ve found in the past is that something simple, like adequately explaining[how to configure your iPhone](, took me 19,000 words. So when I say I want to expand my Codex, I’m picturing something encyclopedic. It’ll probably take a million words at least. The connection to this newsletter is that the insights and research I share here are often part of expanding a topic in the Codex. So, for example, I have an entry ready on Codexes and we are talking about Codexes right now, so in situations like this I will include a line like: Filed under: [Codex]( If you want to go deeper, click through and get my deep dive on the topic. Do that right now if you are interested in writing a Codex for yourself. - - - - - #2. A new Discord community for you all. Some of you want to go deeper into the topics we cover here. I don’t know all the ways we’ll use this community, but I do know that for now, I’m only ready for a small group of you. Lately, we have been talking a lot about purpose. Would you like to talk about and clarify your own sense of purpose? If so, then you are part of the small group I’m looking for. Please follow this [invite link]( and join the #better-humans channel. If you don’t join now, I’ll have other calls to join down the road. Why purpose? Well, for one, I have an entry for the Codex drafted but I want to work with some of you on your purpose in order to help refine my entry. This is another chance to show how I’m going to be linking back to the Codex. Filed under: [Purpose]( - - - - - #3. Now, you are coaches too. The third new thing is an additional focus. Professional coaching requires a very deep skillset. But separately, we are all casual coaches occasionally, helping our peers, friends, colleagues, etc. So I’m going to try to make more explicit how you can use what you learn in this newsletter to be of service. - - - - - Tips or feedback? The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
