I will have to remember ‘I am here today to cross the swamp, not to fight all the alligators.

I will have to remember ‘I am here today to cross the swamp, not to fight all the alligators.’ ~ From [View online]( [Coach Tony]( Coach Tony [@tonystubblebine]( I will have to remember ‘I am here today to cross the swamp, not to fight all the alligators.’ ~ From [The Art of Possibility]( by [Rosamund]( and [Benjamin]( Zander That’s my fav from [Tim Ferriss](’ post [30 Quotes I’m Pondering and Revisiting](. +++++ Happiness and optimism are correlated with success. New research on soldiers indicates [happiness predicts job performance](: While we expected that well-being and optimism would matter to performance, we were taken aback by just how much they mattered. We saw four times as many awards earned by the initially happiest soldiers (upper quartile) compared with those who were unhappiest initially (lower quartile) — a huge difference in performance between those groups. This gap held when we accounted for status (officers versus enlisted soldiers), gender, race, education, and other demographic characteristics. In fact, happiness — and, to a somewhat lesser extent, optimism — were better predictors of awards than any demographic factor we examined. Do you think this is correlation or causation? +++++ Do this to cure mental exhaustion. A study that says [acute aerobic exercise helps you recover from mental exhaustion](: Prolonged periods of intense cognitive activity lead to a state of mental exhaustion. While widespread strategies to recover from mental exhaustion (i.e., watching TV) are non-effective, aerobic exercise seems to be a promising approach. This can be explained by the acute and chronic aerobic exercise-induced benefits on the central nervous system. In the study, participants were doing 30 minutes of exercise, but this is also very similar to the results I’ve been getting from the [Pomodoro 1k technique](. +++++ Consistent intensity beats maximum intensity. If you ever were a competitive distance runner, then you probably love the book [Once a Runner](. I’ve recommended it to non-runners with mixed results. But I think anyone attracted to hard challenges will like it and find that it rings true. This is one of my favorite quotes. He wanted to impart some of the truths Bruce Denton had taught him, that you don’t become a champion by winning a morning workout. The only true way is to marshal the ferocity of your ambition over the course of many days, weeks, months, and (if you could finally come to accept it) years. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials. +++++ Three mindsets to change. Months ago, a reader had asked me for more depth on mindsets that are worth changing. I’ve had that filed away as something to get back to and then read this article, [3 Super Toxic Mindsets Most People Consider Acceptable]( by [Darshak Rana](. Here are the three that he goes into: thinking in absolutes, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, and “I will prove you wrong.” +++++ Thank you for reading this newsletter. I have a dual mission right now and I would love to hear from you if you can help: A) I'm doing research for an unannounced project. If you have tips, tricks or insight related to any topic, please share them with me. B) I'd like to inspire and inform people like you in a way that you then use to improve your life or the lives around you. If this newsletter ever turns into real impact, please let me know.
