Doing a year-end review is what I call “picking up your paycheck.” You did a lot of work in 2021 and [Coach Tony]( Coach Tony [@tonystubblebine]( Doing a year-end review is what I call “picking up your paycheck.” You did a lot of work in 2021 and your review is where you get paid off by capturing lessons learned and entering the new year smarter than you entered this year. From both personal and coaching experience, doing this review can take a while. So it’s best to start early in the month, i.e. now. ___ Two Annual Review Systems. I recommend starting with either [Jason Shen](’s [3-Hour Annual Review](. or [Niklas](’s [5-Minute Annual Review](. They are both good — just pick the one that matches your ambition. ___ Add in gratitude. I don’t like getting stuck in a self-critical hole at the end of the year. Of course, critiquing yourself is part of the process. But when all you do is critique you lose track of what you gain by working this hard. So every year I do a gratitude exercise to pull out 52 “good things” from the year that I’m grateful for. Of course, I use memory prompts. Here’s a link for reviewing your [Netflix activity](. Then I look at my calendar and my photos. If you do this every year you end up feeling pretty accomplished. [Here’s my history of gratitude lists, now totally 730](. ___ Synthesizing your knowledge into a book of your life’s wisdom. The following exercise is very extra. I’ve offered it up to a lot of people now and what I’ve learned is that it’s only for some of you. If you love writing, then it’ll feel like a long journal entry. If you don’t love writing then it’ll feel like homework. The exercise is to write and update the core of your life’s wisdom, philosophies, and best practices on living. Your output is called a Codex Vitae. [Mine is about 2k words]( and took me five years to write. ___ Give a name to your year. In case you are skipping Jason’s annual review system, this is one of his exercises that I don’t want you to miss. Before I started this practice I only had two named years, my birth year and my high school graduation year. Now I can point to every recent year and recall that year’s defining theme. This doesn’t have to be poetic. Mine are pretty concrete, i.e. Year of VanLife for the year where I spent 4 months living in a van or, this year, Year of Upstate for the house “upstate from NYC” that we bought and renovated. ___ Let me know what you named your year. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
