Poor sleep correlates with, among many other things: - Reduced cardiovascular function - Increased metabolic disease, including impaired glucose regulation —implicated specifically in Type II Diabetes - Reduced immune system function The immune system impact is particularly dramatic, and occurs with a single night of poor sleep! NK cells destroy cancer and other infected cells, and alert the rest of the immune system to leap into action. In one study, all participants were given a good night’s sleep and then had their NK cell levels measured. On the second night, half were allowed only four hours of sleep. The next day, NK cell levels were measured again. The group who got only four hours of sleep had an astonishing 70% reduction in the number of NK cells! That's a huge hit to your immune system. Think about what chronic poor sleep could do! It turns out that there in fact strong links between lack of sleep and some forms of cancer. The World Health Organization has even classified shift work with circadian disruption as a probable carcinogen. In my VIP Coaching Program this week, we're starting a new module on how to fix your sleep.
