I’ve put together a lot of IKEA furniture recently but their bunk bed is grandmaster level difficult. I took a full hour to complete step five and then realized there are thirty-five steps. All of the frustration I have with assembling any furniture is that my goal is to be done. So every mistake delays the goal. But when I was a kid with a new LEGO set my goal was to figure it out. Assembly was the fun part. We think of being goal-oriented as a positive. But it’s also the source of unnecessary suffering. Goals draw you out of the present moment. And so, like many parts of self-improvement, there is an art to being goal-directed but process-oriented. This bunk bed has a purpose and a deadline (goal), but I didn’t let those distract me from enjoying the many hours of mastering the assembly (process). Victory. _ Reading well is the most underexplored self-improvement tactic. Here’s my spiel. Forget reading to remember. You should read in order to transform yourself. This quote gets at this: Sönke encourages us to read with a pen in hand. Not to take notes in the margins, or to highlight “important” passages of the text. But to write about the ideas in our own words. Connecting the ideas to our own life and asking questions for further research. Here’s a good example of how high stakes creates paralysis and then the very simple solution. A reader writes: I’m writing a ‘father of the groom’ speech. Agonising over exactly the correct language. I like you’re idea of getting a very rough draft first and improving it. _ Take your goals to the next level by finding a coach for yourself in our [coaching directory](.
