Many of you have heard the legend of Jerry Seinfeld’s productivity method of writing at least one joke every day and making an X on the calendar. Don’t break the chain of X’s. Well, you’re going to be surprised by what Seinfeld [says about this legend](: This is hilarious to me, that somehow I am getting credit for making an X on a calendar with the Seinfeld productivity program. It’s the dumbest non-idea that was not mine, but somehow I’m getting credit for it. — And yet, Don’t Break the Chain is a useful idea. That the legend is fake reminds me of feedback I heard about a master coach. “You know most of his stories aren’t true, right? But what’s magical is that that doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is that the stories help you see your problems differently.” How do you feel about poetic license in the world of self-improvement gurus? Does advice have to be literally true or is it enough to be merely helpful? Think of a bad habit as something that replaced one of your good habits. 💪💪💪 Day three of a twenty day sequence to break a bad habit. 💪💪💪 I’m ending each of these issues with a sequence of exercises you can do to explore your own potential. My view on life is that self-improvement is a year round never ending journey simply because it’s so interesting and rewarding. There’s nothing “wrong” with you, in my opinion, and yet there’s never and end to the ways in which we can level up. The first in this sequence of exercises starts with [picking a habit to break]( and then a [picking a replacement habit](. I like for people to have tried breaking their habit before doing this third exercise. Are you on the “Don’t Break the Chain” path or the “Gradual Reduction” path? If you know SMART goals, that’s pretty much what is going on here. How you answer this question tells you how to Measure your habit breaking. 🔗 Don’t break the chain. You chose a bad habit which you were capable of eliminating on day one. Your goal every day has been to successfully and perfectly avoid your habit. The exercise we do have the intention of making it easier for you to keep your streak going. ↘️ Gradual reduction. This is where you used to smoke three packs of cigarettes, but now you only smoke one. Or you avoid sugar before 2pm. Or you are down from 2 hours of web browsing to 30 min. Each exercise is about walling a little bit more of your bad habit off. Eventually it will be completely blocked and die. Which path are you on? I’m completely serious that you should respond and tell me. Letting me know what you picked is a form of accountability. Plus I love hearing from people.
