This girl's circumstances taught her to persevere—and she went on to change the world. You could, too—but not by staying within your comfort zone. [Coach.me Logo]( Coach.me Newsletter A single teenager named her baby after an obscure character in the Old Testament, "Orpah", mentioned in the Book of Ruth. Unable to raise the child on her own, she sent Orpah Gail to live with her grandmother, Hattie Mae, who wasn't much better off. Though they lived in poverty, Hattie Mae taught Orpah Gail to read before she was three years old. She was a harsh teacher. But that was about the only advantage in life that Orpah Gail could claim. Later, Orpah Gail was shuttled among family members, suffered years of horrific abuse at the hands of some of them, and endured teasing by peers for her clothing made out of potato sacks and other signs of poverty. Alone, she played games of pretend, interviewing dolls and birds that perched on the fences near her rural homes. She ran away from home and had a child herself when she was only 14—but the baby was born prematurely and died soon after. Still, Orpah Gail persevered in public school, and parlayed educational opportunities into stepping stones. She earned a scholarship to a state university, won a beauty pageant, and earned the attention of a local radio station. Though her name on her birth certificate is Orpah, family members pronounced it another way, and that's what stuck. As you might have guessed by now, [that little girl]( grew up to become Oprah Winfrey—a woman of incredible accomplishments, and with a financial net worth of billions of dollars today. What gives a person the ability to persist despite unbelievable odds? What did Oprah Winfrey have that allowed her not only to endure but to succeed—spectacularly—in circumstances that most of us would find impossible? I think it's an elusive quality called "grit". Some call it Stoicism, but I don't believe the musings and practices of ancient philosophers quite captures the full range of resilience we're going to cover. Whatever you call it, I want more of that, and I'll bet you do, too. For the next four weeks in Heavy Mental, we'll be doing some mental pushups to build grit. We'll look at ways you can build your sense of resiliency and emotional control to get through the toughest of times. We'll look at cutting edge research and some ancient wisdom, and see what we can learn to build ourselves into confident, capable achievers. Even in the face of adversity. An interesting quest in these times, no?
