How to Solve Any Problem While You Sleep
Use this technique to ramp up your creative problem solving.
Every wonder why you practice something difficult in the evening, give up in frustration, and then (after a good night's sleep) wake up and find you could suddenly do it with ease?
It turns out that your brain continues to learn and to work on problems long after you consciously stop working on them.
That's why it's so important for you to take good care of your brain with good exercise and nutrition, quality sleep, and good mental hygiene habits of avoiding "junk" distractions.
You can also use your brain's natural unconscious talent for creative problem solving. Here's an exercise to help you do just that.
This technique primes your brain to work on hard problems overnight and then use morning journaling to uncover the creative solutions brewing in your subconscious. It comes from chess prodigy, [Josh Waitzkin]( and I use it myself often.
Here are the steps:
- Choose your most difficult current project—the one that requires all of your creativity and brain power.
- Do some work on it at the end of your day. But don’t try to finish the work. Leave the project unfinished. Ask yourself what you need to figure out to make progress; what problems need to be solved?
- Stop working. It’s perfectly fine to have a full evening after doing this work—eat, drink, workout, watch TV. But don't do any other mentally straining tasks.
- Sleep.
- Wake up and write about that project. Allow yourself to just do a stream-of-conscious journal about it. It's okay to just vent your feelings, note your dreams, or jot down any other ideas that might come up. Give yourself at least ten or twenty minutes. DON'T check your email or visit any of those "slot machine" web sites that will hijack your brain.
- At the end of your journaling period, look back at the work you left unfinished the night before. Chances are, you'll see some things in a new light.
Overnight, your brain will have wrestled with the problem and will almost always have made new connections.
This is a tactic that many of you know from my [Heavy Mental]( coaching group. It synthesizes at least three of the twelve topics we tackle during the year: journaling, single-tasking, and sleep. We're working on Single Tasking right now, and in a couple of weeks we'll start an exciting new module on journaling. You can [join any time]( hope to see you there!
