Welcome to Edition 37 of Alex In My Inbox brought to you by [Copy MBA.]( Alex In My Inbox is a weekly copywriting series where I share interesting, actionable, and hilarious copywriting tips from "Alex." Alex is an anonymous copywriter who shares these tips with me so that I can share them with you. Today, Alex is going to play some reverse psychology Jedi mind tricks on everyone. In order to make you a better copywriter, he’s going to tell you the 3 things that’ll make you the worst copywriter ever. Avoid these things and you’ll be just fine. Let’s get into it! Dear Chase, There’s certainly no shortage of bad copy in this world. Everyone knows what bad copy looks like…but for some reason, people keep writing bad copy anyway. It gives me a sick feeling. Like my stomach is on fire. It’s my own personal version of hell. I am going to write this email to you as if it’s a personal journal entry that I can vent in. Hopefully, you use this to know what you should avoid doing at all costs. If I see another ad or email that does any of these 3 things, you may need to find a new Alex. I might end up in a coma. Remember, if any of these apply to you, you are a bad copywriter. Read this and internalize it deep in your soul. These 3 things make you a bad copywriter. Here we go. 1. Don’t have empathy. Empathy is just something that nurses and kindergarten teachers need to have. Marketers don’t need it whatsoever. Definitely don’t do your research, put yourself in the shoes of your customer/lead, or try and figure out what their pain points are. Don’t even try to figure out what makes your audience tick so that you can deliver them relevant messaging that actually resonates. Empathy shows weakness and makes you untrustworthy. So don’t show any signs of empathy. 2. Try to be funny without actually being funny. If you’re trying to turn off an audience completely, it’s best to make jokes that are super uncalibrated and not funny at all. I highly recommend making corny jabs about the product that are out of place and forced. Don’t let a funny bit arise on its own or happen organically. That’s the worst way to do it. Make sure you grab a swipe file of jokes from YouTubers that make jokes for kids, and insert them into your copy. Everyone will love it. Also, if you DO make a joke, make sure it’s too complicated for anyone to get it and it goes straight over their heads. That shows dominance. Again, showing dominance and making your audience feel lost is the best thing you can do in copywriting. 3. Talk like a robot. Personality ALSO shows weakness. Why would you want to speak in a way that’s fun and relatable to your audience? You are NOT relatable. You are better than them. You never want to make them feel like they’re talking to a human, because you’re not human. You are a direct response robot that wants nothing else but to SELL SELL SELL. If you’re going to write good copy, don’t use phrases or idioms that a human would use. Don’t write like you talk. Whoever says you should do that is a loser. There you go Chase. That’s all of the stuff you shouldn’t do. I hope you don’t send this email out to 50,000 people. It would be a shame if they used these lessons and implemented them. That would make them a bad copywriter. Yours falsely, Alex Not sent from my iPhone Some of you already know who "Alex" is. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
