There are two things that I found hard to train and develop... 1 - Getting players to explode beyond the 1st step… on their 2nd and 3rd strides to the basket. Some players would let up after the first explosive step. Other players would overstride which created a poor position to explode on the 2nd and 3rd steps. 2 - Exploding after a dribble move. It’s easy to get players to do a quick change of direction move. However, many struggle to explode in the opposite direction and take advantage of the quick separation they just created. When I verbally cued the players to “drive, drive, drive”, so they would continue to explode on those 2nd and 3rd steps, it worked a little bit. But when I created a hybrid drill... I saw a lot more progress. As many of you know, we’re big fans of using tools and constraints that force players to develop certain skills. Many times, you can put them in a situation and the drill teaches by itself. That’s actually my preference. That’s why I really like this drill. It looks weird, but it’s highly effective in getting players to explode out of dribble moves and on their 2nd and 3rd steps. Check it out and let me know what you think.
