Welcome to the mailbag! We’ve received some great questions and comments on our recent articles and content lately.  Before we get to the articles and questions, we wanted to feature three of our Breakthrough coaches and make an announcement…  Breakthrough Camp Coaches Reaching New Heights!  1 - Rhys Pepino was [recently named Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator]( at The University of the South.  2 - Asia McKinley recently earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Child & Adolescent Trauma from Marquette University.  3 - 26 year coaching veteran Steve Spiehs was recently hired as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Heartland Lutheran High School in Grand Island, Nebraska.  Congrats to all three coaches! We know they’ll continue to add value in these roles as well as their role as Breakthrough Camp Coaches!   Zoom Offense BONUS Webinar Preview! Our last mailbag mentioned the two bonus webinars that offer an in-depth breakdown of [Coach Nate Steege’s Zoom Offense]( (both the 1 Post Flow Zoom Offense and 2 Post Flow Zoom Offense) in live game situations. These webinars help you better teach and understand the little details of executing the simplified zoom offense (2 Post Flow) for the middle school and JV teams in your program… While also covering advanced zoom concepts (1 Post Flow) for your varsity and even college teams! In these webinars, Coach Steege dissects real game clips, giving you a firsthand look at how the offense performs in live competition. He shows you what all of the actions and options look like in a game setting.  You will also learn counters and reads that players can duplicate, so they’re ready to put the defense on their heels.  [Here’s a sneak peak of the webinars and some key takeaways.](   NEW Coaching Articles, Plays, Drills & Videos (ALL Age Levels):  [Summer Reading! 15 Books That Will Make You A Better Basketball Coach](  [6 Relentless Pressure Defense Drills - From 3x State Champion Coach](  [10 Coaching Decisions To Watch During the NBA Playoffs](  [How I Know The Zoom Offense Is Right For Your Team](   NEW YOUTH Coaching Articles, Drills, & Videos:  [How We Navigate Multi-sport Participation With Our Kids](  [The Hidden Benefits Of Multi-Sport Participation For Younger Athletes](  [The #1 Reason Players Miss Layups](   NEW Training Articles, Drills, & Videos:  [Expand Back Attack To Improve At The Rack](  [The Ultimate Finishing Drill: Use Back Attack To Improve At The Rack](  [2 Ballhandling Counter Moves To Control Your Defender](  [5 Tips for Changing Your ShotÂ](   Today’s Mailbag  Question: Biggest coaching issues - teamwork and rebounding  Coach Katie sent in this question:  Hello, I coach at the YMCA. Right now my team is girls 5th-7th grade. Currently my biggest issue is rebounding/boxing out and teamwork. I have a player that’s kind of a ball hog and I need to address that at our next practice coming up. I have a few of your boxing out practice drills that we will do this week. Our first game was a win, our second game was a tie. My only other concern right now is we had a lot of fouls in our last game. I know some are expected but one girl got pulled out in the last minute of the game. And the last foul that was called resulted in our tie because the opponent scored on both free throw shots.  Jeff Huber’s Response:  Hi Katie-  There’s a lot there. Let’s address each issue individually:  1 - Rebounding - in my experience coaching my daughter’s team at that age, physicality does not come naturally to a lot of young female athletes. It’s important to get them comfortable initiating contact.   I would start by focusing heavily on technique. Do some boxout drills without a ball. This allows them to focus on form without being distracted by the ball.   Once they’re comfortable with how to box out, add a ball and work on pursuing the ball.  2 - Fouling - As players learn to be more physical, fouls can be a byproduct. That’s part of the learning curve.    The next step is to teach them to be physical without fouling. I see a lot of fouls in youth games that result from reaching or slapping at the ball.   To work on that, have players make their hands into fists when practicing defense. This allows them to use their arms to disrupt passes. However, it prevents them from reaching and slapping.   Also make sure to call fouls in practice. As coaches, we often let fouls go. This can reinforce a bad habit. Call fouls. Also, stop and teach to make sure your players know why it was a foul. They will adjust quickly!  3 - Teamwork - this is always a challenge. I think your plan to communicate proactively is a good one. Instead of focusing on the player’s negative habits, stress the good ones you’d like to see her build.  For example, stress the value of getting her teammates involved. Then, when she makes a good unselfish play, celebrate it! Players respond to praise.   Finally, because parents are so important at that age, consider clueing them in on the things you’re asking her to do. If you can get their support, that’s huge!  Good Luck!   Question: Is The Attack & Counter System Still Relevant 10 Years Later?  Coach Bryan sent in this question:  I was JUST struggling to decide whether or not to take advantage of the discount announced for the 'attack and counter' package. I am undecided because it dates back to 2014 - a full decade ago. It even includes DVDs, if I'm not mistaken. My point is...there's a lot of basketball that has passed from which to learn and evolve. I am torn if the package still relates to the game today.  Mark Brase’s Response:  That's a fair question, but I wouldn't let the date of the filming fool you.  Coach Kelbick is an elite level coach and teacher. The footwork and skills he teaches are timeless. It is still one of our most popular products and coaches/players still love it!  There are lots of different ways you can teach things, the key is to find an effective one that works. And that is what Coach Kelbick has done. He has an extremely effective system that teaches multiple skills that all players need to be successful.  I think you'll like it....and we have the money back guarantee if you don't!  Thanks for the question!   Question: What Ages Are The Hybrid Offense Drills Meant For? On Facebook, we shared the 2 Man Kick Up Drill from [Ryan Schultz’s Hybrid Attack Offense](.  Coach Greg responded:  Great drill. Good intensity from the players. What age group is this?  Jeff Huber’s response -  Hi Greg -  The players featured in the video are high school players. That said, these drills (and the offense) would also be beneficial for youth and middle school players as well.  Skills like attacking downhill, playing off two feet, reacting to penetration, and shooting off the move apply at every level!  YouTube Video Feedback: A Key Trapping Tip To Create Long Passes & Turnovers  We recently posted [this video]( two 4v4 drills from Mike Hilmer’s Relentless Pressure System.   Gary sent in this feedback:  SUGGESTION: Have the 2 guys nearest the base line have high hands, the longer skip passes are then more difficult to accomplish. Also, a high skip pass gives the defender more time to get into the passing lane!!!  Jeff Huber’s Response:  Excellent points, Gary. High hands are crucial in a trap. As you said, they force the offensive player to throw a higher and slow pass.  This gives the other 3 defenders more time to read and react to the pass, which should result in more turnovers for your team!  Summer Reading Feedback: Another One To Add To Your Reading List!  We recently shared a list of [15 great coaching books](  Mark shared one of his favorites: Every Moment Matters by John O’Sullivan.  Jeff Huber’s Response  Mark, thank you for sharing. I am adding this to MY summer reading list!  There are so many great books out there that can help us become better coaches. I am sure this one will deliver!  Personalized responses, “6+ Stars” out of 5, and the “perfect” teaching tool: A Glimpse Into New Breakthrough Product Reviews  We continue to receive great reviews on many of our products, and I want to share a few with you today so you can see if they’re the right fit for you.  Here is a 5 star review of [The Relentless Pressure System](  “I love the clear explanations and video models. Coach is a great teacher and shared over 20 drills by video to help us install his system. Excellent teaching tool in every way! Thought it was perfect.  I emailed Mike two questions after watching all chapters of the system and received a personal response from Coach a few hours later. Amazing!”  Robert F.  Here is a recent review of the Bonus Webinars that accompany[Nate Steege’s Zoom Offense](  “Adding the 2 videos with dialogue and game film turns this from 5 stars to 6+ stars imo.”  Chad  “Great Coaching”, “Enjoyed Tremendously” and “Will Do Again”: Soundbites From Breakthrough Camp Attendees  Check out these camp reviews:    Breakthrough Camps Starting Soon!
