Today we’re going to talk about a couple of things... - The Defensive Mentality That Spurred UNC Forward - Find out what Hubert Davis did on February 17 to light a fire under his Tar Heel players...and it can work for you! - The Best Youth Skill to Emphasize at Camps - There are 5 reasons you should emphasize it…and why we do it with our own children. You’ll find both topics below…  --------------------------------------------------------------- This Defensive Mentality Spurred UNC Forward…And it Can Work For You, Too Sometimes you have to put the Mister Nice Guy approach away... And ask more of your team - challenge them in a positive way to get results. Hubert Davis, in his first year as head coach of North Carolina’s men’s basketball, did just that…and now his team is facing off against Kansas in the NCAA Championship game tonight. On February 17, Davis said enough’s enough. His Tar Heels had only been holding opponents to 44% shooting (36% for three pointers), resulting in a loss against Pittsburgh the night before. At practice that day, Davis challenged his players. He asked them... How could you play harder against each other in private than against an ACC opponent on live television? Well, something resonated with his players because they played like a whole new team since that particular practice, only losing 1 game to Virginia Tech (who ended up taking the championship in the ACC tournament). And in an article I read on March 25 on 247sports, their defensive stats rose right along with their wins… ever since Davis pulled out the “tough love” approach: - They held their opponents to 40.7% shooting (down from 44%) - And 30% from the three-point line (down from 36%) - And moved up in adjusted defensive efficiency rankings to #6 in the nation And that’s a reason they’re an 8th seed that beat #2 Duke in the Final Four game Saturday...they took their defense up a notch. The Tar Heels believe in tough man to man and committed to it...with that little wake up call in February. One of the best ways you can learn how to challenge your players appropriately and bring out the best in them in a positive way like Davis did… is by watching Jim Huber’s [Man to Man Defense videos](. Not only does he show you a great defense to teach in a layered step-by-step approach, he also shows you how to coach, how to challenge, how to get the most out of your players on the defensive end to become an elite defensive team... Huber’s system is a transformer…and lets players have fun playing defense: I used what I learned from this video series almost exactly and watched my team transform on the defensive end throughout the year. My players had FUN playing defense by the end of the year and took pride in their accomplishments on that end of the floor. (Rik Williams from San Diego, CA) And as you may know, we strongly believe in teaching those ultra-important man to man concepts at the youth level so older players are then ready for different types of defenses. Huber’s man to man defense is a really comprehensive resource that can help both veteran and new coaches play fundamental man to man and hold them accountable... This is a must have for any coach who wants to have a team that plays tough fundamental man to man defense. Coach Huber's style demonstrates how to hold kids accountable and why!!  I will use this resource as a cornerstone to my coaching philosophy. I would recommend this to anyone. It can be watched and used at the youth level as well High School Varsity!! (Coach Medose) You’ll find everything you need to build a dominating man to man defense that shuts down opponents and wins games: - Step by step teaching progression - 2 complimentary eBooks with all the steps, drills, and key teaching points documented for you - Over 50 man to man defense drills We’d love for you to take a look and see why 42 reviewers gave it an average 4.9 out of 5 stars... And if Huber’s [Man to Man System]( is something you can use to “push” your players in the right direction as Davis did, you can get it for 32% off until midnight tonight.  --------------------------------------------------------------- 5 Reasons You Should Emphasize This Skill With Youth Players… With Camp Advice When it comes to teaching youth players individual offense skills, I believe ball handling is the best skill to emphasize. I believe this for a few different reasons. 1. Ball handling is easier to learn Since ball handling works with gravity, it takes less strength and coordination to dribble the ball into the ground. This makes it easier to learn and you can start dribbling at almost any age. Whereas, passing and shooting takes more coordination and strength and is a skill that is usually developed at a later age when compared to ball handling. 2. Immediate improvement leads to motivation When more time is spent on ball handling, players see immediate improvement and it motivates them to play more! And as mentioned in previous emails, I believe success is the foundation of learning. So when the players see themselves improving and having success with a skill, they want to do that activity more. It helps them develop a passion for the sport. 3. Develops confidence and makes them more effective on the court When a player hasn’t developed confidence in their ball handling, they tend to look down at the ground while dribbling. They develop a tunnel of vision. Now, they can’t see the defense. Now, they can’t see open teammates. Now, they can’t see open driving lanes to score. This makes them ineffective on the basketball court. When players are comfortable with their dribbling skills, it makes them more confident and they can see more opportunities on the floor. They have more success and will get more playing time! 4. Teach them the RIGHT ball handling habits at an early age You can start to teach effective ball handling habits and drills before they get old enough to watch the social media junk that can hinder their progress. When kids start to reach their teenage years, they start to get on social media more often and watch training videos. And there is a lot of junk out there, especially when it comes to dribbling and ball handling drills! There is a lot of hype and cool-looking stuff, but they tend to lack substance. And quite frankly, they are a waste of time. By teaching them the skills and habits at a young age, you don’t have to worry about this as much. They’ve already developed a great foundation. 5. Focus on shooting when they’re ready When a player reaches puberty and starts to develop more strength and coordination, they are ready to spend more time on their shooting mechanics. Since you already have a strong foundation of ball handling, this enables you to spend more time on shooting mechanics when the time is right. Great shooters like Steph Curry and JJ Redick both transformed their shooting form when they reached their teenage years. Am I saying you should ignore other skills like shooting? Absolutely not. I think you should develop all of your skills. However, I believe an emphasis should be placed on ball handling and more time should be spent there. This is why we have two summer camps specifically for youth players. (We also have camps for older players too.) - The Ball Handling and Scoring Camp is a camp that emphasizes individual offense. That way, players can become confident in their skills and become a dribbling and scoring threat. As mentioned earlier, this enables them to be a better team player because they can now focus on keeping their head up to see the defense, scoring lanes, and open teammates. - The Essential Youth Skills Camp is a comprehensive camp. It covers all of the essential skills including ball handling that youth players should learn including team offense and team defense. This is what we would do with our own children and that’s why we developed those camps to fit those needs. Find Camps Near You If you would like to see the entire Breakthrough Camp Schedule with 300+ camps across North America, go to the following page. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
