The new Speaker, a Trump loyalist, has a near-perfect rating from three gun rights groups including the NRA. Johnson has offered incessant thoughts and prayers of his own and on behalf of the House of Representatives – placations that neither comfort grieving families nor make us safer. And now IS the time to be talking about legislation. Because we can stop the next tragedy with solutions that are proven effective. The shooter in Lewiston used an assault style weapon to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Our nation once had a ban on weapons like this which reduced mass shootings and gun deaths, but the NRA made sure it ended. And if gun lobby backed politicians have their way, nothing will be done to get these weapons of war off the streets.
